The 1st time you asked yourselves the question......"Should we move?"........is the time you should have = peaceful night, no drama but the storm.😊❤✨🌊💨⛵️🏝👙🌞✨

Oh dear, what a terrible night. Glad you are safe, and hope you still had some time to explore this beautiful part of the world! It's also one of the few places around Australia where people can do bareboat charters, i.e. chartering a sailboat with no licence required, and experience the life on a boat for a few days, to get a taste of what you are doing ☺️
Love your episodes! Now THAT was a close call 😮 Phew- I think the captain of the steel boat owes you guys a cold beer… Thanks for sharing. Life is good~
We did a few bareboat charters in the past and loved to visit Kingfisher Bay. Always a good place to visit. Our last charter was this January on board of the catamaran "Alida". We were lucky and had beautiful weather, had such a great time and the children enjoyed a swim and an ice cream at the resort 😊
Hi khristina and John, lots of excitement and scary Maneuvers there. Keep looking pretty khristina. So John's a commercial pilot, good for him. Thanks much and catch you next time.
Great presentation of a challenging situation. Well done for surviving (relatively) unscathed. Deciding whether to change a dodgy anchorage is exactly the same as deciding whether to reef down your sails in a building wind i.e. the right time is the first time it enters your mind! 😊
100%, well said! We’re usually very conservative. And so true re: reefing the sails, and if you’re wrong, what’s the worst that can happen? You just put out more sail again 🙌👍👌 good advice here guys x
Hey guys I have been missing your weekly posts so great to see another post pop up this morning & it would appear that you both had a very scary night at anchor of Fraser Island & that guy in the steel boat must have rocks in his head when he anchored so close to you guys with the inevitable consequences & most thankful that the situation did not have a worse outcome. I could see by the look on Kristins's face during the storm that she was very frightened at the prospect at perhaps what could have been when there were plenty of other places your good mate could have anchored but not where he did. John always seems to wear trouble staying calm & not raising his voice & that is to be admired. Anyway you had a hugely scary time but thankfully perhaps the better for it. I admire you both for what you have been able to accomplish & look forward to new surprises shortly. A graet video again Kristina so keep up your good work. Love.
Glad you, John & Tacana are all safe. R.I.P John's hat 😥, although a "burial at sea" seems appropriate! Keep up the great work, looking forward to more of your adventures & stay safe.
This is always my fear in busy anchorages and its amazing how often it happens. Very poor judgement by the other boat. Really glad it was only Johns had you lost, stay safe guys.
That is my worst fear! I'm always so paranoid when it comes to anchoring around other boats. So glad you guys are okay and decided to move. You tell the story beautifully. Had me in suspense the whole time! Safe travels
Hey guys great job staying calm and working as a team to get out of danger. The tide must be 20 feet for the ketch to beach and than refloat that is something that you don't see. I'm glad you guys are safe and ready to continue your adventures. Peace
The tides in this part of the world are so large! And this was a king tide on top. It can be very challenging to anchor it that’s for sure and the current rips through! Cheers for watching Vince 😀⛵️
I’m a livaboard cruiser and find most instincts regarding times to move are usually the right options hey when in doubt lift your pick I know kingfisher can be busy and it drops off quite deep aye That other boats a douche😅 glad nothing bad happened
Yeh, your so right about the drop off! There’s a fine line where you can anchor before it gets to deep.. and as you can see it’s also very shallow closer to the beach. We should have moved, but that storm was coming in fast and I was worried we may not be able to find a spot to re-anchor in time and what if we then dragged.. so many variables.. but this one was worse case scenario… I mean it could have been a whole lot worse, but we live and we learn! Next time, we’ll def be lifting the pick! 🫠🫠🫠 cheers for watching Adam 👍😀⛵️ x
Yeah, Kingfisher can be a bit tricky to anchor at due to the steep drop-off. The sweet spot between being too deep and too shallow is probably only 30m wide so single file is the only real option otherwise you get too close to other boats. I don't know why the guy in the black boat didn't go North of the jetty. There was nobody there plus it shelves at about 5-6 m so is actually a better spot.
Absolutely. None of us wanted to be in this awful situation... it sucked! Totally unexpected and unintended as you say ❤️ Hope you're having a great week, and cheers for stopping to chat with us! xx
Oh Yeah Aussie Powerhouses!!!!! John ur a legend mate, but next time ur gut says hmmm I don't feel right, Bloody well listen to it Ok. So proud of u both working together. Hope u full on enjoyed the rest of ur time up there.🇦🇺💪👌👍😲
Yeh, and the worst part I wasn’t recording cause I was just literally trying to make sure we were going to be okay. The storm was pretty intense there, plus the rain and the storm sounds, and the worry about Tucana. I remember looking over to our starboard side and thinking 😬😬🫣😳 what the heck is going on… I really thought someone a) was going to be injured, b) the boat would move away from where the fenders were, there was a lot of load on them! And the c) trying to retrieve our tender that was wrapped behind the ketch boat, was not fun!!! I wish I had my go pro on my head, but I’m also glad that we could all just work together to make sure we all got out of the situation unscathed!
Super frustrating! We had very similar in the Ionian with 45knot winds where a boat upwind of us dragged, hit 3 other boats then proceed to motor towards us and got their keel stuck on our chain. 45minutes of a 50ft monohull smashing the fuck out of our 33ft wasn't fun but we didn't drag even with them attached to us. They ended up having to cut their anchor free and ended up grounded on the rocks. It was super clear the storm was coming in and they decided to go to the beach bar for drinks instead of preparing their boat like everyone else. Oh and they had no outboard so their skipper never made it back to the boat, only the first 3 crew who set off rowing once the wind had already started to pick up.... Think you did right not moving though because who knows how fast that storm was going to hit you. We went from grey skies 7knots to over 30 in 15minutes in our case then 10mins after that 45. Feel it's better to be on anchor and risk some knocks than be stuck unable to anchor and your only choice been to head into the storm to get out of the anchorage!
I wasn’t able to film the most intense part 🥺 it was so chaotic I just didn’t even have time to get the camera etc, it lasted about 5 mins 😫😣 but got the beginning and end, grateful to be able to tell the story and share the experience and walk away unscathed and unhurt 🧡🙌🙏
People are too social. They instinctually anchor too close because they want to be near other people. This is like how I always park my car out in the farthest part of the parking lot and yet, someone ALWAYS parks NEXT to me!
Absolutely the right call. If in doubt, Head out. Especially when you have a idiot on the steel boat that knows they are not going to move because they are steel! Repel all all pirates! Cutlasses and Bludgeons. Roll out your Canons! You guys were so calm dealing with that Clown! SO John, you have to make a sacrifice to the sea goods if you want to save your ship. Your favorite Hat is was a worthy donation to Tangaroa. Kiaora.
@@KristinasTravels What?! When? Sailing or flying? We'd be happy to give you a tour around the area. We have lots of mountains and water around here. 🤩
@@BogsKitchen I was actually there a few months back! I did an Alaska cruise with my family! I filmed the trip, so I’ll be sure to share it on here soon 🧡😅 sorry I missed you 🥲🥲 next time!!! X
Totally separate question: like you guys I love my J50DS except for the water tank under the master cabin bed that can slosh around noisily at night (unless it’s flat calm or 100% full of water). Do you guys have the same issue? Or did you fix it? I don’t think mine is baffled hence the noise but wondering if I’m alone with this problem?
Hey mate, we didn’t really notice the sloshing of water in the tank, we had plastic moulded tanks including the one under the bed, I can’t recall if it was baffled, I’ve got some photos somewhere if inside the tank, if I find them I’ll let you know! Glad you’re loving the 50DS 🙌🏻
@@jptilley10 Thanks John. Yes my tank is also plastic but again last night I had the dreaded sloshing and had to move to one of the aft cabins for a quiet night 🙄 If you do find any pics yes pls would love to see them. I’m looking into retro-fitting baffles but not yet sure best option…
So totally deficient of that other bloke to park that close! 😡 What can you do, tho? Would not have helped to scream at him. Still, he should have moved, and not forced you guys to get away. That was an extra bit of salt in the wound. Made for a good episode…that’s one positive thing 😊 Looking forward to more of that awesome coast. Great for us here in the California winter to have a vicarious sail through you guys. All the best…Ciao
Well I guess one thing you should take away from this is if you think there is gonna be an issue about someone drag anchor then move as soon as you think that. Better to be safe than sorry.
100% 🙌 It was just worrying cause it was at night, pretty dark, navigating/re-anchoring in current, what if we then couldn’t anchor and the storm hit? We were a little rattled, but yeh.. any situation other than this one probs would have worked out better! 🙈👀 hope you’re having a great weekend 🧡 cheers for watching and your support mate xx
@@KristinasTravels if you can't re-anchor you just stay up all night and motor or sail. At worst you beach and possibly lose your boat. But your are young intelligent capable people that can easily bounce back in life. Without a few problems/battles life would be boring.
Should be fun cruising.. if this is scary.. i have a yacht 30m from Ken right now- it’s not happiness but it’s not stressing me out.. i have put a few fenders out just in case so I don’t have to worry to much…. 3 days or so like this and the wold hasn’t ended.
It can be easy to miss calculate distances, current, depth etc. Sounds it might have been hard for him to move being a heavy boat. Maybe he beached because he was having engine problems or windlass problems , you never know what troubles other people could be experiencing. Sometimes you have to go out of you way to fix a problem cause by another person, but I would suspect he wouldn't have wanted to create problems for other boats, just a human mistake.
I don’t think he had time 😕 but I’m sure he would have felt uncomfortable. We just tried our best to save our boat from any damage which we were able to do, thank goodness! 🧡
Relax, I realize that there are people that they dont know how to sail, but also there are sailors that they are watching your channel. What happened is very common in a sailor's life.
Cheers, for stopping by Conrad! 🙂 Sorry this one didn't hit the sweet spot for you. Have a great week and hope to see you again sometime when the drinks are cold and the sunset it rocking 🫶
