Awh, thanks so much! We hope to keep making them! Need to take a short break soon to work some and get a jump on boat projects/filming. But hope to be back soon with some winter sailing content and some bigger boat projects to get ready for Alaska this Spring (if all goes to plan)🤞🏽
You are the first of the sailing vlogs (that I’ve seen) that have touched on the notion that sea mammals, with echo location, are curious of hydro-dynamic shapes (other than fish) and respond. Great insight!
Awh, thanks for that! I’m not a marine biologist but seems to me like a probable theory aye?! I also entertain the idea that they’re likely more intelligent than I and that I couldn’t possibly begin to imagine what they’re thinking/up to haha much respect🫡
Love to hear that, thank you!! So happy you’re enjoying them and also that you’ve gotten to experience the beauty of this amazing cruising ground first hand for so long. Incredible
Excellent sail on this episode ! Congrats on your first off-shore adventure. Love the Orca encounter and so glad to know that in the PNW there are no concerns about Orcas attacking the rudder. Orcas are wonderful creatures and so incredibly intelligent. James, I’m not exactly sure what to say about your fishing exploits but catching your anchor rode is definitely one fishing story that is worth embellishing 😂 . Looking forward to next week’s episode.
Thanks so much Rodney!! You all caught up now? Been enjoying chatting with you over the various vids!! The orca encounters out here are really something else! Stoked for you to experience it for yourself soon enough! 🎣 gosh words erode that anchor hauling strategy 😂 dang was that ever funny. Catch ya next week friend!
Yup, I binge watched the series/season and now I’ll be “catching up” by starting with your first episode. I’m pretty sure I’ll have some comments for you on these too. At the least you’ll see a new “LIKE” on each one soon. Fair winds guys ⛵️😎
Haha that’s amazing! So stoked your enjoying what we’re creating! The first episodes are a blast from the past/little cringe for us.. it’s a humbling journey this ‘putting yourself out there’ and learning how to film and edit undertaking 😅
Big fish! LOL I have to say I noticed you sail often (it seems) with the chain locker open and the Rocna just "sitting there", that might bite you at some point. One rogue wave and that anchor could go bashing around. Cheers, a.
Great big fishy! Yeah you may have noticed we don’t have a bow roller and our anchor locker doesn’t have a hatch. Rogue waves not generally an issue for us in the inside passage but certainly something to consider when sailing offshore. We’ve been planning an entire ‘bow refit’. Hoping to tick that off the big boat list in the near future, cheers!
Wow ! Another well put together video, beautiful scenery and Orcas. Keep up the great work you guys. Oh it makes me miss my days of coastal BC cruising. Fair winds , congrats on 10k.
Now that you’ve done that bit of off-shore you are ready for the west coast of Vancouver Island. Most of the hops between inlets are less than 50 miles so it’s just a matter of watching the weather.
Yes definitely! Need to make a few more upgrades to the boat to get her in shipshape, but we look forward to heading down the west coast of Van isle in the future! After a good long cruise of Alaska and Haida Gwaii :)
Congratulation 🎉. I used to sail from Campbell River and Duncan. Moved 14 years ago back to Switzerland due to political correctness bs. Currently I am preparing a 33 Ft Sailboat to Sail from Mallorca, Spain to Vancouver Island. I can't wait to see all, what you experience. Most of all, you truly are both an inspiration. A very, very simple, old Sailboat, not even an Anchor winch. And yet your heart and stamina are always a great joy and inspiration to watch. I really, really love your channel the most. You are natural, no overdoing it just simply REALITY, JOY AND TRUTH.
Hi Rover! Good to hear from you, hope the boat preparations are going well! When do you think you’ll be ready to sail? Thank you so much for you kinda words, that really means a lot. We’re so glad you’re enjoying the films.
It’s mostly fun & games but with a heavy dose of hard work and anxiety😂 a good balance for sure. Thank you for joining us on the adventure, stoked to have you with us, cheers!
FUNNY! Hooking the anchor road! What a riot! Congrats on your 1st off shore sailing. Quite a swell in places, for sure. Great video guys! I've watched this one x 3 so far. Just love it.
Once more.....great episode. Personnally I think orca's are smarter than the average human. We do not understand them but they know all about us. And catching your anchor......hilarious.
Sharing your adventures with us in beautifully and such well done videos is very inspiring and as a novice sailor you deliver great sailing lessons. Thank you and many blessings.
Thank you so much for your kind words! Awesome to hear the videos are helpful for others learning how to sail. Hope to be back soon with more. Until then, take good care!
Really enjoy your videos. Totally get the feeling when you accomplish something after believing you could do it one day and then realizing it is happening in that moment..
That was some beautiful footage. Way to go offshore! Thank you for solving the mystery of the big fish who ate your lure! I'll chuckle the next time I'm pulling up my anchor rode.
That oversized anchor is perfect, cool affortable Catalina 30, I would like to hear more about its characteristics in general. I'm from Seattle, Orcas Isl, Friday Harbor, etc. I lived aboard a Rafiki 37 there.
Awesome! We hope to check it all out down there some day! Yess love the Rocna, it’s one of the first things we changed up/installed after buying the boat! We’ve not done a boat tour vid.. maybe we should and include some specs!?What sort of things are you curious to know?
Great video, especially your drone footage. Orca shots perfect, we had an Orca swim under our towed dinghy lift it out of the water and dive under the sailboat, very exciting. SV Brooklyn PNW.
Awe thanks for that! James has gotten pretty proficient with the drone flying this season, especially with the sailing shots! No way, that is such a cool orca interaction. Wow, that would have been incredible, thanks for sharing!
I love the whales and it was the last time i was on boats . 2002 with Prince Of Whales of the Victoria water front .2005 Out of Vancouver and met the whales in Active pass . Tide change made me a little dizzy .2011 on land in 2011 at French beach . Same day same group of whales swam right under my feet on the breakwater in Victoria . Seen them a few years later near the breakwater .Walked it yesterday and seen star fish ,, So warm with the pineapple express .Enjoy the week and hope you don't get to much water were you are .
Oh and i edited a fishing vidio for my cousin years ago at Colin Lake in Northern Alberta and they cought a fish by the tail . the northern Pike got away with there diamonds hook .
Beautiful! We always hear about whales down in Active Pass! Seeing them up close and in the wild is just an incredible experience. Funny story, yesterday on my way to the store I spotted a big black dorsal fin swimming just a few meters offshore, I followed it down the beach and two other whales surfaced, what appeared to be a mother and calf. Looked exactly like the whales we encountered in this vid just100nm North-west if here. Crazy coincidence?
@@AllisonandJamesSailing Remember that one on Check News a few years back a transient orca watching a fisherman on the lower half of the breakwater , a weird sea lion with a long stick it may have thought . it was very curios .
Another wonderful video showcasing the beauty and variety of terrain and conditions that one can expect sailing on the northern BC coast! I’m curious why your boat doesn’t have a cover over the anchor locker? Have you ever taken “green water” over the bow that flooded the locker for a few minutes until it slowly drained away, and if so how does this affect your stability and ability to ride over (rather than through) head seas? Also there seems to be no bow roller for the anchor rode? Whenever I hear your anchor chain rattling over the gunwale I can’t help but think the gelcoat there must be getting gnarled away?
Yep! There is no anchor roller, which is why we keep our hook tucked away in the anchor locker. The roll bar doesn’t fit with the cover on, so we removed it :) never had any issues with stability, in rough seas we lash the anchor down to the bow cleats. The gel coat (sadly) is taking some damage but luckily that’s all fixable down the track! Cheers!
Thanks for another great video! Allison, what part of Newfoundland are you from, are you both planning on sailing full-time or are you working full-time? Stay safe from the east coast of Canada 🇨🇦
St. John’s :) We’d love to be sailing more months of the year but currently working for six months to cover the bills! Hope to keep the channel going. Thanks for watching!
Can you guys do a screen grab off Google with your location pinned, to show us where you are/have been? Also, nice to see a sailing channel that is not ultimately T&A based.
Ahoy! Glad you're enjoying our style! Its a bit chilly to regularly be wearing bikinis where we are! We try to include maps and coordinates info in the majority of our vids. To highlight we're we've been to date, we're thinking of putting together an online cruising guide featuring the anchorages/places we've sailed to here on the Northwest coast. Many are uncharted/not mentioned on Navionics etc. Thanks for watching, cheers!
Yes bet you glad you are not in the Med or they do not have telopathic whale contact with the pod causing havic in the med. If so you migt of had a rudder repair to do. For those who do not know search Orca attcks i off Gibraltar. You will be suprissed how many damaged and sunk sailboats in past three years. Area looks amazing . enjoy.
Absolutely, it’s wild! The behavior of that particular Orca group in the Med is very interesting. Listened to a good podcast about it recently on On the Wind! Recommend it! It’s a beautiful cruising ground here, we are very fortunate. Thank you so much for watching!
Indeed! We are very much aware. As we’ve said/written before we no longer have a leech line and our head sail is hanging on by a hand-sewn thread! 🪡We’re in the market for a new one, cheers!
