Talk with Brian from Delos about Madagascar, they loved it. They also stopped at the protected British Islands in the Indian Ocean and were blown away by the sea life. Good luck, looking forward to your new adventures ahead. :)

Mate, South Africa is hot in December, especially Richard's bay, good route, most cruisers do this route, it's the tried and tested one, stay away from anything north of Tanzania, feral seaspace north. Timing looks good, Nose Be is awesome, friends just spent 4 months there and in Mauritius, Moz channel can be hectic but your direction of flow of Aghulas current is wrong, flow is east to west but there is a local counter current up the channel. The Moz channel will be the toughest along with the N tip of Madagascar, lot's of great places to hide/visit in Mozambique, Durban is a pig shite working Harbour, as is PE, try and do RB to East London, then if you can try and get into St Francis, only stop in PE if there's a feral westerly, from St Francis you can stop at Knysna (extremely dangerous and weather dependent) but a beautiful estuary, or Mossel Bay, then I'd head to Hout Bay. (I'm currently on the hard in PE in preparation for a single handed Atlantic crossing around October) so am pretty familiar with the coastline here, If I'm still here around then I'll buddy boat with you from East London but I doubt it......I'm already 18 months behind my original time frame 😢😢 But I've learned that time frames don't go well with sailing😂😂😂

LOL, you guys have short term memories? To my memory, it was four years ago pretty much exactly that you were about to leave from Thailand or Malaysia to Africa. You even had a contact set up in South Africa, but then Covid hit, causing you to spending the past four years in Malaysia and Thailand. Yes, I've been following you for this long. It was your travels in the South Pacific, the Solomon Islands in particular, that first caught my attention. Anyway, I am looking forward to following along on your next adventure. Finally! :-)

I did this route many times during my childhood aboard my parents’ boats - the common route we took was Sri Lanka/Maldives/Chagos/Madagascar/mainland Africa. If you pass the northern tip of Madagascar, give it a wide berth, it always seemed very rough up there - that’s why we often headed towards Mayotte first. Cheers!

I live in Mtunzini, just south of Richards Bay. The last Cyclone we had here in Zululand, was in 1984 - Domoina - which was really damaging. It was followed shortly by Cyclone Imboa that was a lot of rain, but not too damaging! Cyclones generally don't come as far South as Richards Bay, although in 1984, we were warned to expect Cyclones in Zululand on average, every 7 years!
@stephenkillick5812
@stephenkillick5812 6 месяцев назад
Generally Cyclones that do come ashore hit the Mozambique coast. Last year, Beira was hit by 2 Cyclones in quick succession. They severely damaged the Estoril hotel on the beachfront. We were last there as a family in 1972 when the Portuguese colonial masters were fleeing. Their incredibly poor construction methods were even then deteriorating. As far as I am aware Cyclone Season is January to April. I am not yet a sea vessel sailor but am interested in buying a 30 - 35 foot yacht in GRP, one not too large to single handedly sail. I know how to sail day sailors, so upgrading to a 30 - 35' should not be too dramatic.
@stephenkillick5812
@stephenkillick5812 6 месяцев назад
In the last 4 decades we have lived not far from Richards Bay, we have always lived in Mtunzini and worked almost exclusively in Empangeni. Richards Bay gets really hot from November through to - and including February. I believe that this is because Richards Bay appears geographically to have risen from the ocean, so cooling breezes blow over the city and don't clear the super heated air away. A few years back now, a tanker drifted outside the channel into the Harbour and broke its back in the shallow (for a fully laden tanker) water. You must be able to float in less draft! That being said, there are many sights not too far away from Richards Bay to be explored.

South africa won't be south aus cold unless you go down to Cape Town or inland to Johannesburg. Durban is subtropical and very similar in climate to SEQ. Mozambique is nice too for a fish and a surf. Winters are dry and as you know Indian Ocean and the warm aghulus current. I surfed year.round with no wetsuit when I was younger. I'm a South African from Durban living in SEQ now. Durban winters are warmer than SEQ winters. If you want some recommendations on surf spots and general things to do, give a shout 🤙🏼
