AUCKLAND NEW ZEALAND July 23, 2019. The Chilean Naval Training Ship Esmeralda departed Ports of Auckland today after a short visit. This sailing ship last visited Auckland for the RNZN 75th Anniversary in 2016.(Extended Video)
The Ship was in Sydney in 1961. Invited to a party on board, wonderful music, food and hospitality. The people of Sydney fell in love with the ship, consequently the Captain made a promise to leave Sydney Harbour with all sails up. The morning of departure was very still and misty, and watching from Rose Bay it looked unlikely that the Captain could keep his promise. However as the minutes ticked by, there it was sailing (quietly motoring) with the crew on the sails to the top, a and slowly motoring along out of the mist accompanied by the ships band playing our National Anthem. There was a memory I will never forget. The daily newspaper, of which I still have a copy, announced there were more people lining the shoreline that morning than were there to welcome the a Royal Family.
Ruth, thanks for sharing your wonderfull memories. I to went onboard just prior to sailing and slipped a note to the Officer of the watch to request a sails up departure as I wanted to produce a video. The Esmeralda went under power to the right up the harbour behind some trees turned around, coming back down the harbour with sails being hoisted and the band playing, I know the feeling you had! thanks for your comment, Mike - AirflowNZ
Ruth, thank you very much for your comment. I want to say that I'm very proud of our (chilean) navy, and It's not chauvinism. Our navy is really professional. Officers and all sailors have a very hard and complete training. They are fully commited with our country, are patriots and brave sailors. Moreover, they honour and preserve their great traditions founded in a history plenty of outstandig facts. In addition, they are true gentlemen. Greetings from Chile.
How wonderful to see the ship again leaving New Zealand. so thankful for the special memories. In 1962 I was Twenty Three - now in 2023 I am Eighty Four, remember that Sydney visit like it was yesterday and still get a thrill to see it sailing and being part of that noisy crowd on the banks of Sydney Harbour
Que orgullo de ver a nuesta representante del mar y lamarina. La Esmeralda es la mas fiel exponente embajadora de nuestro pais.. Que belleza verla surcar por esa bahia, con una presencia inmaculada y con la altivez propia de la marina. Lo mas soberbio de ese marco...... como flameaba nuestra Bandera y como exponia esos colores , que te ahogaban de emocion. Viva Chile y que honor el tenerte y que se te Admire
Sin ser para nada un conocedor de los temas maritimos .pero creo que la Esmeralda sin dudas es una belleza de barco .Tiene un bonito diseño .y en general la veo muy bella .como una mujer chilena hermosamente vestida
