Episode 7: Bass Strait Crossing Part 3 - Bass Strait to Eden
The final episode.
A big thank you to my loyal viewers and to the large number of new viewers who have taken the trouble to “like” the videos, to leave a comment, and to subscribe to my channel. It makes all the work that I have put into this new series worthwhile.
This episode of the journey covers the next day, the third and last in our crossing of Bass Strait. It was a rough night as expected, and we had only four hours “sleep” each, in two blocks of two hours. At this time of the year, night lasts for 14 hours here.
In the morning, 40 miles off the Victorian coast, the wind built to 30 knots. Squalls surrounded us. But with daylight and the ability to see what we were doing, we were confident to give Ocealys her head. She took off, sitting mostly around 10 knots and occasionally exceeding 14 knots.
After 5 hours we rounded Cape Howe, entering NSW waters. The sun came out, the sea went flat, and the land sheltered us from the strong westerly winds still ripping through Bass Strait to the south. It was like arriving on another planet.
After a lazy doddle up the coast we finally dropped anchor in Twofold Bay, across the way from the town of Eden, in the late afternoon. Mission accomplished.
The video finishes with a brief photo essay of the leg from Eden to Coffs Harbour which Bill and I sailed after Tim went home.
The project has been three months in the filming and producing. I hope you like it. If you do, please give the videos a “thumbs up”, subscribe to my channel and hit the “bell” button to be notified of future releases.

Enjoyed every minute of every episode Grant. Well worth watching and the time spent making it for us.

Thanks Gary. I really appreciate your comments, especially being a Tassie local - I think that local audiences are always harder to please. And thanks for the promos.

In 1986, I sailed a small trimaran from Hobart to Sydney. Also left Hobart in July. Your video footage is AWESOME ! Took me straight back there. I have neither photo's nor video of that crossing. Your footage is exactly as I remember, The colours, the lumpy grey water, the sunrises. Very much appreciated.

Hey Steve, thanks very much for the kind words. Your trip in a small tri all that time ago sounds amazing, congratulations, it was intimidating enough at times in the big cat I was on!

Such good photography/ light/ composure... then i checked your bio🤣. Great work, really enjoyable videos. Done that passage about a dozen times, memories blend. Last time racing in the other direction and no time for pics. Appreciate the refresher and your efforts. 👌

Hey Andy, thanks very much for the lovely comment. Certainly helps make the effort of creating the videos worthwhile. I am really pleased that an experienced Sydney-Hobart veteran such as yourself (Happy Wanderer?) should find my videos worth watching, especially since the conditions I experienced are no doubt nothing compared to what you have seen. Every Boxing Day sees my wife and I glued to the TV to watch the start of the S-H, but I have to admit I've never had the aspiration to compete in that, so good on you.

Meant to say following on from previous reply, I didn't have the aspiration to compete in the S-H but I did do the full S-H crew qualification course that was introduced after the 1998 race as a means of improving my cruising skills.
