Ep76. In this episode, we explore Kingston before sailing to Kerr Bay on Amherst Island. We explain the best (cheapest) place to dock your boat when visiting Kingston. We show drone footage (Mavic Pro) to explain where the dock is located in the harbor and when we arrive in Kerr Bay we also get the drone up to show you what it looks like from the air. Kerr Bay is directly across the river from Bath Ontario and Loyalist Cove Marina in case you plan to visit there.

Another great video! Since you guys like to get off the boat, next time try Stella Bay about two inlets before Kerrs, right in the village, not as sheltered or as big but has a government dock for your dinghy and you can tie up and get your bikes off before anchoring. We are going to try overnighting in Wemps bay when the win is right this summer as it has a nice sandy bottom and is supposed to be great for swimming.

Oh very cool. Yes we need to find good anchorages where we can get to use our folding bikes more.

Hi Craig. Great to see more sailing videos. If your furling drum is made by Furlex, then the drum comes apart. Just remove the three star head screws that hold the cage on and remove it by springing the silver part out. Then loosen off the large screw below where the line enters the drum. Fold this down out of the way The drum can then be split by inserting a wide bladed screw driver into one of the slots and levering out gently. You then do the same with the other slot. Catch everything with your third hand! The rope attachment is inside one half of the drum. You don't need to take the mast off. Have a look on the Selden web site, they have tons of information about all their products with lots of tips and hints. We have 5 weeks till we launch here in Portugal, then we head south till the butter melts and turn west till we hit land. Steve & Alex.

What a cool episode Craig and Janis! We had the opportunity this past week to stay for a week on Manitoulin Island and there were so so many sailboats at the docks over there. Viewing your channel is getting my wife interested in taking on sailing lessons over in Aylmer next year. Ya, thanks for that :-) Great footage guys, thanks and keep it up!

Hitting someone else's wake is usually either an uncomfortable crockery rattling pain or whoop whoop fun depending on your mood. The problem with planing hull boats like ours for example, at tickover we do 3.5knots SOG our marina limit is 3, the main channel to the bay is 5 knots. We can do up to 12 knots with the motor in normally aspirated mode, which we do often, just cruising the bay. Any more and the supercharger on our VP KAD 42 kicks in & we are up on the plane and the turbo takes over. that transission & lower planing speed makes a big wake, when we get up above 25 knots she is really skimming over the water & little wake. Despite La Rochelle being a sailing mecca, the bay is huge, so we try hard to crack on away from slow craft.
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 7 лет назад
+Russ Cattell . Yes those power cruisers really put out a huge wake. I'm sure lots of money in gas to push that much water around. I can't afford that gas bill. U are right though, big waves are a pain or fun depending on The angle you hit them and your mood. When motoring it's not a problem to turn into them but when sailing you don't always have that option when close hauled.

Hey that's my boat in the back ground around minute 8. Would have invited you over if I had made the connection. Next time then! Like you, this is my first season post NSC, however, I sail out of Collins Bay. I didn't know the Kingston Town Docks were essentially free. I would have taken advantage of that this past weekend had I known.

Very cool. Yes, Janice and I use to have tons and tons of boater friends when we were on the Ottawa River for 6 years. Now that we are here on this big water we don't know hardly anyone. So our social life has suffered from the change. So anyone out there sees us out on the water. Come over and say hi. We love being social. Sundowners are a MUST!!

Excellent video. I think you're ready for landing drones on aircraft carriers 😊.
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 7 лет назад
Ha Ha. Thanks. I still haven't had the nerve to try landing while also sailing. That is going to require hand catching what is in essence a bunch of spinning blades while on a moving boat. Scary. But on a light wind day I will try it.

To get to shore, go to Stella Bay just east of Kerr less than half km. There is a municipal dock to tie dinghy to and off you go on bikes. Cheers SV Veritas
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 7 лет назад
OK. Good to know! Is that the big dock I filmed with the drone that I figured was part of the Amherst Ferry dock? Back when we filmed this we only had the electric trolling motor on our dinghy so our range was really limited so going 1/2km each way was out of the question, but we recently purchased a 6hp outboard so now we can travel far from our boat to go to shore. So much freedom now.

Its the bay just around the point of land east of ferry dock. You can anchor there.. Check it out on your charts or chart plotter. One of our favourite anchorages. We were there this past tuesday and only boat anchored there. One needs to anchor about mid way in as at mouth of bay depth is 50+ ft. Sv Veritas

Great show as usual. It will be great once you find the lost footage. Those SD cards take about 3 months to come up from odd places. The landing on the boat does look tricky. Don't ignore the low battery warning for to long. My drone dropped out of the sky last Monday. Completely destroyed the battery the drone and gimbal lost somewhere in a tree. Took two days to find the Mavic. But DJI has it and they will fix it and send me the bill for a new gimbal. It reminded me of when you lost your first Mavic.

@Bowmans-Woods 7 лет назад
Ya, I dont fly to the point of getting low battery warnings. Especially over water. I come home early. Now a battery error like I had can come out of nowhere. Fingers crossed, no repeats of that

Cruising Off Duty the battery was just replaced actually. And I was doing illegal flying above legal limit. I'm just glad I found the drone. My cache footage is nothing I wanted to share hehe

Hey Craig :) New record, 4:40AM. Thanks for the new video, I've got something to watch on the boring train ride :) Mavic is perfect travel drone due to it's size but for the same reason it's hard to catch it on the rocking boat. That's why I've 3d printed handle for mine, works perfectly. Looking at the shoot from approaching the Off Duty again, why don't you land on the solar? Seen quite a few mavic/sailing videos with solars beeing used as launch platform.
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 7 лет назад
The 2 back stays make it hard. One on either side of the solar panels. One big gust of wind and the boat swings or the mavic strays even a little and the props hit the wires. Too risky.
@Maddie-Girl

Were you anchored at Kerr bay if you go east 1km there is Stella bay a better anchorage and they have a dock you can dingy into take your bikes the village of Stella is there,
@Bowmans-Woods

OK. Thanks. We will try that bay next time.

Hi! At the end when you were landing your drone and talking about landing, why not land it on your solar panels? If you had a landing pad with a soft bottom so that you don't scratch them. Lots of room there. Just an idea. I enjoy your video's. I live in Moncton. I may start doing some video's too in the future. I'm going to Quebec saturday to get myself a full keel 22 foot sailboat. Woohoo lol. It will be a long day cuz once I got the boat strapped on the trailer with all the papers and everything that come with the boat, we are leaving right away back to Moncton. 7 hours one way. I figured I would get a small one to give sailing a try. That way if it doesn't work out I'm not in it with a big chunk of money. Ciao, Jean
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 7 лет назад
Hey John. I hope you get into sailing. You will enjoy it. As for landing on the solar panels, if you look closely I have double back stays. On on each side ot the solar panels that get narrower as they go up to the top of the mast. So taking off from the solar panels runs the high risk of the boat turning while anchored and the drone props hitting one of the 2 back stay wires. The only area that has no wires nearby is directly under the boom. So I tie the boom way off to the side and land there. It is still a small area to hit and it can't really be used if I was sailing the boat. If sailing slowly I would have to hand take off and land the Mavic.

Cruising Off Duty I got a feeling I'm going to like it. The first video I watched on youtube was Shearwater - What 30-40 knots looks like, Porto to Gibraltar. I watched a fiew others after that and I got hooked. Finally getting one after 3 years. I never thought about the boat turning. Makes sense.

Cruising Off Duty Hi Craig! I got my Alberg home safely. Woohoo! With a little bit of elbow greese and a few coins, I will have it ready for next spring. I don't know the year but I'm guessing it's late sixtys or early 70's. It's in a decent shape tho. I'm super happy with my purchase and it was dirt cheap. Ciao!

It's still high, but not as high as it was earlier in the season. Maybe next year the water level will be normal and we will have a better (ie hotter drier and earlier) season.

Don't expect Kerr Bay and Amherst Island to look like this. It is now an industrial site with many massive wind turbines and industrial scale docking etc. in Kerr Bay. BTW the way to go ashore is around the corner at Stella Bay where there is (or was) a quaint little village, nice dinghy dock, etc. Its a shame that they've ruined the island which was an important bird migration area also.

This video is not that old so it looks pretty much like that. But thanks for the tip on going to shore.

Very nice video. What is the procedure for getting a city dock? Last time I was there a few years back you had to go to the marina office on the other side of the Hotel and just pay their usual overnighting fee (which of course includes showers). I wasn't aware that there was an option for city docks. Do you go to the marina office to pay?
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 6 лет назад
They have a pay and display machine near the dock. You don't need to go to the marina. We went there to ask. They don't care about the day docks.

Hey Peter. The boat is no longer in Ottawa. It is in Kingston. I post on COD facebook page where we are heading when we are going out on the boat. Always happy to meet viewers out on the water or around the Treasure Island marina where we keep our boat. Met quite a few already.

Canada post has the worst service, period !!
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 7 лет назад
Ya. It is pretty bad. Amazon paid for expedited 2 day shipping (as Im a Prime member) and Canada Post put it on a regular 6 business day shipping system (so that means 10 days) . Canada post has almost no ability to track the package too. When only one bike showed up I tried to track the package and it said it was in BC. That is on the other side of the country???? I guess Amazon paid for the problem by shipping me a 2nd bike so they did right by me. But brutal service by Canada Post for sure.
@homedroneaerialphotography1828
I'm in Ontario as well Craig and they have managed to mess up my deliveries too many times. Don't be fooled they can track your package , they just decided to not offer that service anymore for any package sent from outside our boarder. They must be overworked filling our mail boxes full of junk mail cause that's pretty much all I ever get in mine. Everyone uses the internet these days for chatting and shopping and business, how busy can they be ? Nuff bitching , enjoy your travels guys !
