The newer Beneteau's are great sailing vessels with plenty of room, are easier to maintain than older vessels, and have more space than most. Beneteau and Jeanneau now seem to understand that cruisers today look at catamarans as the epitome of cruising; but, for much less cost, these Beneteau's, especially the larger ones, are a much better deal.

I do love the design of the actual boats and sail plan and roominess etc., it all makes sense, but I just wish they built versions that didn't have such cheap looking veneer wood. I'm wondering how much it would cost to replace it with something more sturdy. Have you ever seen examples of people who have done that, and what it might take to do it? I know it's probably cost prohibitive, but it would be interesting to see what people have done.

I agree give me the 34 with a wing keel and I’m happy as can be, low cost operating and comfort for Caribbean cruising👍

Very nice. Thank you for the information. I think the entry point is about 2x this boat vs a Hallberg-Rassy but I was wondering if you would consider doing a similar video so people could compare. The new models that is.

You really need to do a series on the methods of construction of some of these newer boats. In particular are the bulkheads tabed in or glued in. With such large flat areas on the bottom bulkheads staying attached during pounding of the flat hull becomes even more important. I have heard that Beneteaus are particularly bad for Bulkhead detachment due to inadequate gluing but that some related Jeanneau boats have tabbed in bulkheads. Can you do some research and confirm please.

You are right on the money. Small Beneteas will last and they give confidence when you plow through storms. I don't want a heavy boat unless it has a periscope and dive planes.

Chris these are great designs and wonderful boats, the older boats can’t hold a candle to the new boats. I think you should by the 34.1 it fits your needs to a tee. I still am partial to the 51.1! Has the room I really want to have. One thing I have noticed is that a lot of sailors buy a boat to small. Hoping I will have a boat this year! Cheers Chris keep up the good work thanks again!

Nice Denis nice, I'd buy the 34.1 right now if I can afford it , I'm out at least a year of not longer for the next boat based on finances , now if RU-vid takes off maybe sooner 😁

Chris, what I really like about these boats is not only their layout and efficient use of space; it's their "just right" interiors. On many boats I've looked at (only online, mind you), the interiors seem to be too luxurious, too ornate, and too fancy for life on a boat; good examples that come to mind are the Catalina Cruiser Series boats like the 315, 355, and so on. OTOH, you have the performance oriented boats like the J Boats or the Corsair speedster trimarans with their minimalist, bare-bones interiors. What I like about the new Beneteaus is that they strike a balance between the two extremes. They're not too fancy; they're not too bare-bones; they're like Goldilocks-JUST RIGHT!
@warrenthorp
@warrenthorp 2 года назад
I like ‘em, but I went on them all at the Southampton Boat Show and and the interiors are just too IKEA for me. Weekender? No problem. But the Bavarias just had a slightly more ‘liveable’ feel.

The less wood interior is to lower the center of gravity and increase the strength per weight ratio. It's just something to get used to.

Not a Beneteau-specific question I guess, but - with dual rudders, either side of the prop, is there no way to use prop wash to turn the boat from a standing or slow start?

Chris those new Beneteau's look just fabulous. But I am like you and they are just out of my price range at this time. Since looking at used boats for sale now for about 2 years I have liked the Beneteau best but could take a Jeneneau if I had to lol. Your videos have showed me that that nice 50'+ is just not the right choice with all the extra costs that come with them. Now looking in the 35 to 40' range and much newer than when I started. Don't like the idea of being on the hard more than sailing. You know unless someone out there wants to give a nice ready to sail blue water cruiser, haha.

Enjoyed the video, but I have a problem in that I’m about 6’4”, so I’m thinking I need a longer, at least 40’ boat to have the headroom I would need to be comfortable living on it. So, looking forward to other videos in the series.

Been following your posts now for a few years and it’s brilliant that you give as honest good opinion of old, new sail boat comparable, I currently sail a Hanse 2008 43e in the Mediterranean usually 6-8 months a year, she’s not as new as vessels you talk about but she’s a modern design boat, very agile & fast, I am thinking of changing her to a 1992 Najad 390 because I sail short handed or solo and I find my boat a handful when solo, and tiring on longer passages due to her light displacement, this is my problem with newer fast boats. But as you say, they have all the space and well designed boats, but not sure on longer passages Please let me know your thoughts on this matter Thank you

I looooove them. I am surprised about the 31.1. Lots of space and MUCH less expensive that the 34, eh ? One thing I am still having a hard time to really / accurately find out is how much yearly income one needs to have to be able to effort a boat, part time / seasonal . Like for 5/6 months a year 🤷‍♂️😪 Is it $100,000 a year? $150,000 a year ? Less? More ? It seems to be all over the place. 😁

Thank you for videos, in new england area , 30.1 is quoted for 225.4K (yesterday) but you are estimating much less than that; Is there a way to know pricing from Beneteau company. There is also substantial difference between the quote for 40.1 and the one in france , with same packs.
@ChasingLatitudes
@ChasingLatitudes 2 года назад
So something to always keep in mind is the 160k price from beneteau is barebones and not rigged or outfitted for anything yet hence the 225k price retail. You can contact beneteau and get a direct price quote from them as well. I dont recommend purchasing brand new , always try and get one at least a couple years or more older so you dont eat all that initial depreciation.

@m1k3droid
@m1k3droid 2 года назад
@ABC gang But are Beneteaus' woodwork actually chip board or just look that way? Chip board doesn't do well in wet environments, I'd imagine they'd be using rigid dense polymer foam board instead if they were going that direction. Would save them weight which makes the boats more lively on the water. With polymer foam board you can coat them in epoxy and impress wood grain patterns with colors right in the polymer. If they used that sort of technology they could make the styling look a lot more old school as well.

PS ive heard the old idiom "If it Flys, Floats or F*cks, rent it" bandied about several times lately, is there a provision for lease/rent for these things, seems it might work out way better for tax purposes also?

What would you add to the basic packages for solo sailing in the Caribbean? Or are these "ready to sail" straight from the manufacturer?
@ChasingLatitudes
@ChasingLatitudes 2 года назад
Water maker, solar, larger battery bank, that's about it, could add AIS, possibly an auto pilot however here in the Caribbean you won't use it much as passages are very short
@dahveed284
@dahveed284 2 года назад
@@ChasingLatitudes Auto pilot for a singlehanded sailor is probably a good addition. I'll check into these boats. By the time I'm ready to buy, there maybe a few used ones in the market.

@ChasingLatitudes 2 года назад
@@dahveed284 For long passages yes, for here in the Caribbean island hoping not so much as there are numerous reefs and the trips are very very short, its a bonus and a nice addition but not 100% needed initially

So, think B38.1 (New: $300k), but in a couple of years, she'll be going for less than $150k out of the Moorings, right? But, I want: (2) stateroom/owners version with a lifting keel. What's hotter than a draft under 4' when up & almost 8' when fully deployed for some serious upwind fleet stomping? Umm, nothing! Umbrella's in my fruity beverages while in the USVI, yet deep keeled stability when winds rise & seas get frisky. Are ya feelin' me here? I thought I was going to have find a Jeanneau of similar length to get that wonderful new 'lifting keel' but- the parent Company said 'not so fast' and shared the wealth with the big sister! Scha-Weet for us! I love added complexity: hydraulics, dyneema lines, SS pins & impossible to anti-foul centerboard liners! Bring Them On!!! Yay for me! Yummy, added weight below the H20 line- stability! (OK, I know there'll be a lil bangin' upwind in weather- I've dealt with it before, I'm sure I'll be fine!) Supahfast downwind with partial deployment or WipeOut if not. Excitement- I see you in my future!!!!
@kell7195
@kell7195 2 года назад
More complex yep but it wont sink the boat if it falls off if im looking at the design correctly, seems the keel bolts etc are isolated from the cabin in the I assume water tight case that protrudes up. Also if you leave it sitting high and dry every so often I assume a lot of the sea life that sticks to your hull dies off ie anti-foul less important and haul outs less frequent. I love the swing keel versatility best of both worlds to my untrained eye, anyone pointing out the real world benefits and concerns is highly valuable, theory is all well and good but experience of real world issues with such things takes precedence in my mind, how loud exactly is that banging?
@DCGULL01
@DCGULL01 2 года назад
@@kell7195 Well, in my experience, it can get pretty loud (think: banging on a boat that vibrates when exceeding hull speed...then imagine a weighted bat doing the same thing inside a box bolted to said hull). But, its the 2020's for Heaven's Sake and I think the SS pin must be loaded into a pretty slick SS lined socket. Prolly have to replace some PTFE sleeve every decade or so for smooth operation & reduced noise. To me- very worth it!
@kell7195
@kell7195 2 года назад
The theoretical versatility of that swing keel seems amazing, im wishing they had it on the bigger models. Will the boat sink if it "falls off" or are the keel bolts etc isolated from the cabin?
