We're talking 'apparent wind, not 'true wind'. The apparent wind is higher than the true wind on this close-to-the-wind course. I noticed a GPS speed of 5,7 kt and apparent wind of 30.2 kt. Without current this would be (roughly) 30.2-5.7=24.5 kt true wind. We need more input for a more accurate measurement, I know. And, I don't know if there's a current in that area, influencing boat's speed. Having written this: one should adjust the sails in relation to the apparent wind.
Correct. I was showing apparent wind. Unfortunately, and as i mention in my in-video comments, my wind direction indicator is not working. So all I have in the video is apparent, which is accurate. There usually is not a lot of current in that area. Maybe a knot. I was too busy to check. I was sailing close into the wind at the time of the video. I saw the 36 knots apparent when I was sailing north. And apparent wind was directly off my starboard beem.
I was out for about 2 hours. The forecast was for about 15 knots. It was about that as I was leaving the dock. It started building as I was motoring out of Little Creek. So the wind had not been up for long. The waves were definitely building as I was out there. Between 6 and 7pm, the waves were reported as 1.5 to 2 feet. By 9pm, they were reported at 4 feet.
@@sailingin-tuitionwithchuck I'm further up the bay, sparrows point. When those waves start stacking it gets pretty unruly. Definitely wouldn't be out in 4' that's for sure. 15knts is my limit right now. 25' Catalina swing keel
@brianluck84 I had a Catalina 27 tall rig (it had a little bowsprit). I loved it and have videos sailing it on my channel. It was a great boat. Very capable. As long as you can reef your main and fur your jib, you should be fine in 20+ knots. My jib was hank on and I couldn't reef it. But it was only a 110%.
@@sailingin-tuitionwithchuck I'm new to the sailing community. 3rd season with a boat. Came with a 150% Hank on headsail and a 110% Hank on. Main has one reef. So until I gain experience 15 is my limit. I know the boat can take more. I'm just not there yet.
