In this video the general shape of a sail is discussed and reasons are presented for why it is beneficial to introduce curvature into the shape of a sail.
More formally, key points including: the Leading Edge, Trailing Edge, and Point of Maximum Draft are located on a section-view of a sail. A number of parameters which define the shape of a sail are also presented including: Chord Length, Draft Depth, and the Draft Position. Sail Twist is explained and shown from a top and rear-view, as well as in three sections of a sail from top to bottom.

Hi Everyone, I made some changes to my channel this winter that resulted in YT deleting all of my comments/replies on these videos. It's really a shame, because I feel like I have answered quite a few theory questions in the comments section over the years. If you have a question, even if it looks like it's been asked before, please don't hesitate to post a comment, I'll do my best to get back to you. Cheers, JH

This is super helpful, thanks! I'm getting ready to learn to sail, and my math brain insists I understand the physics, too. It is surprisingly tricky to find a video diving into the physics and "why" of sails, there's just so much practical content out there that it swamps the algorithm and theoretical content like this gets hidden.

you're lucky you have a math brain... my brain freezes when i hear the word "angle" lol but i've been practicing sailing and need to learn theory too

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. One day, I hope to circumnavigate the globe, and this is precisely the type of information I am looking for. As a commercially rated pilot, much of the information in this video is similar to what I have learned in aviation. Of course, some of the terminology is specific to sailing, but the physics principles of an airfoil remain constant. I'm really looking forward to watching more of your videos.

Very well presented! Very nice pace which gave me time to digest each piece of info as it was presented plus I liked the review at the end to reinforce. And I loved how it was entirely visual - great diagrams! Thanks!

Amazing Aerodynamic lecture! Using colors and a simple language plus sincerity made it easy to understand for such a complex topic. Thank You.Please do some more.

Great videos. I'd love to hear what you have to say about wing sails like in the America's Cup, advantages and disadvantages. I don't get why they use them. Gonna watch a bunch of your other vids now. Cheers!

For sure. I raced out of the National Yacht Club in Toronto around 6 years ago now and also did some instructing as well as three LO300's. It's amazing how much knowing the theory can improve boat handling. I've always been interested in the fluid mechanics side of things, CE, CLR, sail shape etc., learning how to steer with the sails instead of the rudder. Anyways, best of luck with the coming season!

Can you give me references like example from LAT 20°north & Longitude 121° east. To LAT 32° South & Longitude 152° east that is Sydney harbour bridge how many miles is this ? Or how many miles from Batanes island to Sydney harbour bridge?

Hello Sir! Thank you so much for your amazing video on sail shape! I'm attending a ASA 101 course this week on the gulf coast and it's an awesome advantage to have this knowledge and understanding .... It was really the hardest part to understand in the course ware! Anyway I look forward to your future videos and appreciate your time and effort in helping me understand sail aerodynamics It reminds me a-lot of rotorwing aerodynamics!! Fair winds!!! Doug

Thank you for such an amazing video Julian! Just a question, you mention that moving the draft aft is not good. Some literature indicates that in very light airs and smooth water the best performance is obtained with a draft that is up to 65%, why is that?
@howarthsailing
@howarthsailing 2 года назад
I'm sorry that I don't have an exact answer to the question, but there is a general sense that in lighter air you can improve performance by putting the draft further aft, which in turn moves the CE slightly aft and creates a very small amount of weather helm. It seems to be true, but I can't exactly explain why.

“Sailing Theory” means they’re not going to give you the facts about how a sail boat works.
