441st subscriber LIKE; 2,337th tag-along view. Let's go sailing!! How big of a job is it to remove/replace the windshield? Might you consider making it a hinged-at-the-top awning-style windshield in the future? Sorta like the openable kind of the 1930s vintage cars. You got some very interesting captures in this short episode. "Good onya, Skippah!"

Is there anything like a small electric engine that would only run at noon when you have excess power? something to avoid wasting so much sun when the batteries are topped all day long? Would be helpful to add some knots here and there as excess varies..

I don't know if it would step on any laws or anything, but if you are having issues with the light from the sun blinding you, you can always just tint the windows. If I remember correctly, they even have the kind of window tint that change from darker to lighter depending on the sun, basically like Transition Glasses. All window Tints really are, are just a film that goes on kind of like a sticker. I mean I am sure it takes skill to do it right, but it seems like a pretty simple fix so the sun isn't blinding you during sunset or sunrise. If you wanted to save money in the long run, you could switch out the Engine you are using for a electric one that runs off of a rechargeable battery bank, that way you wouldn't have to buy fuel anymore. Providing you were generating enough from solar and maybe even a wave generator you could hook up, you would only ever need to replenish food and water lol. See, this is what happens when I watch a bunch of videos, I start thinking of ways to upgrade the things people are doing lol.

I think those big yachts motoring around without even the main up are professional crews moving the boat, under strict instructions to not wear the sails out.

Hey Sam, If it's ok to ask, what was the date on your arrival to Palma? Reason I ask is that the yacht at 3:53.....I think that's the yacht my wife used to work on. Looks identical to it, although I haven't seen it in a decade so not totally sure. AIS says it's been there for a while...curious to know if the timing lines up. thanks....and no worries if you don't wanna share that info....I understand

Have you considered switching your cell service to Google Fi? They have robust international support and reasonable rates. Or is there another reason you need to swap SIM cards frequently?
@samholmessailing
@samholmessailing Год назад
Yes I used google fi last year but they often throttle the data and they cancel your data completely if you’re out of the us for a certain amount of time. I liked the concept but It ended up being very frustrating. Its also much cheaper to just get a local prepaid sim in countries that allow it.
@JonathanHStone

Google Fi will cut off your internet if you’re outside of the US for longer than 90 days. Not exactly what their TOS says, but it is their policy. Unfortunately, I’m dealing with this issue now while I’m in Thailand.

Awesome! Sam, can I ask what your feelings are towards standing rigging that you don't know the age of? Do you personally gamble if it looks good? I have recently read if it's over 10 years old it should be replaced. Apologies if I have missed you covering this subject... I have seen almost all your videos and don't think I have seen you mention it. Thanks a lot
@tyrotrainer765
@tyrotrainer765 Год назад
Hi, I'll tell you what happened to me a few years ago with my 25ft boat, off the English East coast. The boat was second hand but the rigging looked in good shape. We motored out of a narrow tricky river outlet into the sea and the wind started picking up, fast. About a mile offshore there was an almighty crack as the forestay fixing parted at the deck and then the mast started swaying. I managed to jury rig the main halyard to the anchor cleat, just as the outboard engine cut out. By now the sea was pretty rough and blowing us to shore so I put out a PAN call on channel 16. Harwich coastguard were with us within 15 minutes and transferred the wife and kids to their boat, and then sent out a RIB and crewman to tow me into port. The RNLI (lifeboat) guys were brilliant and next day one of them helped me do a temporary fix on the mast and engine so I could get back to my mooring and then get a permanent fix. So in answer to your Q; if I bought another older boat I'd seriously consider getting the rigging overhauled.
@toysrus2413
@toysrus2413 Год назад
@@tyrotrainer765 Argh man that sounds like a nightmare. Glad you all got back safe... Including your boat. Sounds like replacing it is the way to go then (unfortunately ha). Better safe than sorry eh. Cheers
