Does anyone know why there is such strong disco influence in this music? What I find interesting is that by 1982 at the latest, disco was well out of style in America yet only 10 or so years later the style was revived throughout the seasons of Sailor Moon. Does anyone know if Disco was still popular in Japan in the 90's or perhaps it took a while for the style to become popular in Japan?
R&B was huge in Japan until late in the 90s. You can pull up any anime from this era and their credits theme will in some way or another be funk/disco/rock, like Cardcaptor Sakura, Rurouni Kenshin, etc. In a way, Japan's music trend had followed over a decade behind Americas until the 2000s, where they took a notable divergence into their own homemade genres like the "cute" movement. P.S. The music of Sailor Moon is particularly reminiscent of the Motown record company's funk brothers, particularly the congas and tom heavy drum fills.
I can't believe that in Crystal they messed up everything. Even in Fresh Pretty Cure (also Heartcatch, Suite and Smile). They've replaced the jazz-orchestral style music in favor of toned down elevator music and Heavy Metal. And it was a BAD MISTAKE.

Fun Fact: Amy is 28, when Ami is 30! Not very good fact....: AMI CAN DIE OFFICALY SOON..... . Just because....... like Cosmos movie can be last offical project of SM..... soo....... I HOPE MY THEORY IS NOT TRUE. Besides I like Ami character itself! Annd shes soo cute and serious at the same time! 😊🌊❄
I believe Venus and Jupiter have heavy 70s disco influence, but Mars and Mercury is energetic 80s Synth Pop. Moon I think also falls in Electronic too but all leaded with orchestal instruments, I mean it was a movie and the budget was higher than that of the show, and those drums are just so contagiuos.
For the melody leading up to where the vocals sing "SAILOR JUPITERRR," I got 𝄽, A, F, D / A, F, A / 𝄽, A, F, D / A, C, D, A, G, F / 𝄽, A, F, D / A, C, D / E and for the chord progression I got Gmin7 / Gmin6 / Gmin7 / Gm6 / Fmaj7 / F#dim7, D7. I don't really know how to show the rhythms via RU-vid comment so I tried my best by including the rests and bars 😅 but I hope this helps!
@@SoftwareAgentsTV thank you!! It makes sense that you had figured it out (especially considering how old this comment is) but I'm glad to get the confirmation! 🙂
I personally think of the R movie as a greatest hits of the entire series. They really condense a lot of great character moments, music, plot and themes into a short runtime.
The action and transformations in all the movies, especially R, were the best parts for me! Too bad Crystal doesn't display the same feelings and feels utterly one dimensional.
I'm really sorry but i wish that Sailor Moon Crystal have transformation music like this... I don't know why Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card manage to bring back the old vibe to the new one, but Sailor Moon Crystal can't....
Crystal tries to emulate modern Pretty Cure-style classical inspired music than anything, and I think that's the reason why the soundtrack falls short in comparison to the original's. Considering how timeless Disco is and how City Pop made a mini resurgence it could have worked well together, but ig it is what it is
Emily Wheater you should listen to the audio then. The "r" sound is sometimes pronounced like an L. And also, yes there is a V character in Japanese, and if you looked at the way Sailor Venus' name was spelled (セーラーヴィーナス), you would notice it contains ヴィ for "Vi" and not the Katakana for "Bi". ヴ is the V character pronounced "Vu" followed by a ィ making it "Vi", so really, I was right. Also that wasn't Romaji to begin with, Romaji would have been "Sera Binasu" which is not correct, instead it would be "Sera Vinasu". We were just mimicking the sounds the singers made.
Definitely the melody and composition falls in the mid to late 70s disco and funk genre. Japanese Pop music did have 70s influences that carried on from the 80s until early 90s, which is why most compositions of anime during that time have that distinct sound.
The movie version of Moon Crystal Power should have been included in the Proplica Crystal Star. They included both the TV and the movie versions of Moon Princess Halation in the Cutie Moon Rod, so why not the Crystal Star too?
Another problem I always had with Crystal is that it doesn't even copy the manga properly. There's side stories and hilarious moments in the manga to help show the great personalities from every character that were completely deleted in Crystal. Crystal just seems too heavy focused on the plot.

I'm glad that the later seasons kept the parts of the track of the other Sailor Senshi, as it helped their transformations stand out from Sailor Moon and Chibi Moon's.
