Japan: you wanna make your own sailor moon.. do you know anything about the story and the characters? Usa: Yup Japan: leave you to it.. *walks away Usa: ....oh god what do we do now
I think the king of anime title could also be attributed to Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy, with the manga first being created in the 1950s and the anime in the 1960s, regarded by some as being the first anime
@@1995ToyotaCresta trust me I’ve already thought of Astroboy. And Astro boy is more along the lines of the anime that started the current way anime is now. If Dragon Ball is King and Sailor Moon is the Queen Astro Boy would be like the King that started the line that without him nothing would be how it is now but doesn’t get the respect he deserves. I mean Astro Boy was not the literal first Anime but it’s the first anime to make Anime move into the western superhero genre of anime. A brief bit of history of y’all don’t mind. But there was anime before AstroBoy but back then anime was more so like regular Samurai and Ninja type of stuff. But the creator of Astroboy loved old comic books like Superman, Flash Gordon and western comics like that. And with him liking western comic books he wanted to make Eastern comic books aka manga but with a more western appeal to them so he created Astroboy. And AstroBoy is what creatorslike Akiram Toriyama loved growing up and they made Japanese Eastern comics(manga) also more western like and that’s why a lot of modern manga and anime are how they are because mangaka back in the day loved Western comic books but wanted to make it more eastern like. But yeah, sorry for the spill. But again Astroboy is pretty much the man who started the modern anime/manga but doesn’t get the respect that it deserves. And I say Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon are the King and Queen respectively because they’re are what broke most people into anime and manga and if they did break you into it they broke your favorite mangakas into anime and manga and I can 100% guarantee you that! I was watching DBZ way back in 1994 on a TV station called The UPN when it was the horrible dubs. I loved DBZ but had no idea it was anime I just thought it was so random cartoon. But UPN used to play a lot of anime for some reason and one day they played this anime called Princess Mononoke. I had no idea it was anime but I loved that movie so so much. I literally feel in love with anime right then and there. It took me years to find out what that movie was. But I ended up finding out it was anime and also found out that the show I used to watch all the time on UPN called Dragon Ball Z was anime as well and I’ve loved anime ever since! But it wasn’t until Toonami and Adult Swim where I was just mesmerized by how many different anime genres and shows there were ou there lol. Sorry, I’m getting way off topic my bad lol. 🤦🏾♂️
12:30 Yu Yu hakusho's author, Yoshihiro Togashi, is Naoko Takeuchi's (Sailor Moon author) husband, so he did Koenma disguise as Tuxedo Mask as an homage to his wife's work.
There were two Sailor Moon references in My Little Pony Friendship is Magic. Both in season 5. Big Macintosh transformation sequence and Fluttershy's scary drawings.
In Adventure time there is another reference: Episode “The hard easy” has a huge frog that after a kiss turns into “prince huge”. The transformation sequence is a loving and detailed reference to the classic usagi/sailor moon transformation with the red ribbons
I've never realized Madoka Magica had Sailor Moon reference!! That's very cool! There's also Asobi Asobase with the Sailor Moon reference when Hanako dressed up as her!
We can add "The Dragon Prince" to this list, as there was an episode where Rayla (the Moonshadow elf) is gushing about how the moon empowers her, and she briefly does the finale pose of Sailor Moon's first transformation.
Excel from Excel Saga is voiced by the same person who does the original sailors moon. After she does her sailor moon bit some of the goons make fun of it as a kids show and she gets so angry she starts crying. In the English dub she says she loved it when she was a kid but hates it now cuz she wanted to try out for the role but it was in Canada.
There was one in the netflix show The dragon prince where Callum makes a sailor moon pose revealing he is a humna to a Xadian elf, it can be found on RU-vid
@@seveneightnineandtendidntcare For the South Park Sailor Moon reference, the Compact that Kyle was given was modelled after the Cosmic Heart Compact and not the Eternal Moon Compact.
I don't know if I just missed it in the montage, but just in case, I'd like to point out that She-Ra's transformations in "Princesses of Power" is a direct shout out to Sailor Moon.
*W.I.T.C.H.* also had a second Usagi cameo in season 2 (as well as the one in video), where she's outside a classroom with a Minako lookalike as a chemistry experiment goes kaboom 😂
Fun fact: I don't remember what the episode name was, but it's when Lady Legasus formed her team. Robin referenced Sailor Moon's Cosmic transformation with the shoes, and all of the Titans even do a pose from the show (Cyborg = Venus (?), Starfire = Jupiter, Beast Boy = Mars (?), Robin = Mercury)
Rick and Morty did a Sailor Moon style transformation for Jerry. Also Asobi Asobase had one of the main characters Hanako cosplay Sailor Moon a bit. Edit: There's kind of similar vibe in Doja Cat's music video Like That.
@@dfdpostma Shazam/Captain Marvel would predate even that by a number of years. It was actually DC copying that for He-Man when they wrote the comics before the cartoon came out- before then He-Man was just a jungle warrior in magic armor that enhanced his strength in the early minicomics. Although I'd probably argue that Popeye was the earliest example, if you count his spinach as such.
there was one from Ducktales 2017 where they showed a cosplayer and one of the episodes where Mark Beaks transforms thats referencing the transformation
It makes me soooooo happy to see Precure (the anime that got me into the magical girl genre and was my favorite anime for 4 years) reference my current favorite anime I fucking lost my shit when I saw that lol
13:34 fun fact: Gourry´s german voice actor: Hubertus von Lerchenfeld, also known as Sanji in One Piece, was voicing Motoki Furuhata in the Sailor Moon 90 anime.
My favorite Sailor Moon references are Megas XLR MAD (TV series) TAWOG Penn Zero: Part Time Hero Totally Spies! The Movie Annoying Orange (web series) TTG!
