Here at Crux Stationalis we explore today the Cathedral Church of Rome: Saint John Lateran or San Giovanni in Laterano.
This coming year marks the 1700th anniversary of the dedication of this church which stands as the Mother Church of all the Churches of Rome and of the World.
When most think of Rome they think of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican (San Pietro in Vaticano), but they forget that the Pope’s chair (his cathedra) sits at Saint John Lateran, which sits on the outskirts of Rome next to the Aurelian walls, thanks to the gift of the Laterani land by Emperor Constantine after the edict of Milan and the legalization of Christianity.
