I am a carpenter .. This story has always amazed me . Moved me and whenever something in carpentry I had no idea how to solve .. Called upon the greatest carpenter and it would happen . Stand back and be amazed . When someone would say how great a job I did and thank me .. Id say Don't thank me The Lord gave it to me ThanK The Lord .. I am now dying of cancer and I testify .. Carpentry has given me joy to watch Angels guide my hands to build
Bless his Holy Name. You are stronger person which pass for those ruge times. But your peace and safe is on His hands. You see his face and he will always with you. My mom live in Heaven now and when my time came, I will see her again, and my Savor´s face too.

Reminds me of the double helix DNA design. Super structure and strength. Whoever built it would have an advanced knowledge of creation and created things. This story screams of the actual St. Joseph showing up and running a carpentry clinic.
My brother, Dave, was a master carpenter and he passed away from cancer five days ago. He wasn't a churchgoer but he was a great man and he had great respect for St Joseph. Three days after he passed, a friend who isn't particularly religious sent me a video of this story - he NEVER sends me religious videos and he knew nothing about my brother's devotion to St Joseph. I believe that my brother wanted to share this story with me and he did so through a friend of mine he had never met - I am amazed and comforted. Incidentally, the word miracle comes to us from two words - Greek 'dunamis' meaning a powerful or dynamic event and Latin 'mirablis' which means a wonderful event. So, yes, the spiral staircase truly is a miracle. It will always remind me of my wonderful brother, Dave, a brilliant carpenter.
This story warms my heart. St. Joseph pray for me. I've watched the movie more than once and it's always such a blessing to me. I pray God allows me to see it with my own eyes one day.
I went to the church when I was a little girl and it's so, so beautiful and amazing and how it was made by St. Joseph. Yes it is a mystery miracle 🙏♥️🙏🙏
I have lived in NM & gone to see this staircase. It is very real & even more wondrous than can be described. I doubt anyone on earth could duplicate anything close to this.
I went there to visit as it is wonderful! It has been many years since I visited it sometime in early 2003. I strongly recommend every one to see this!
Without center support of any kind…with only wooden pegs. Over 140 years old. My uncle was an architect. He passed 15 years ago. This would have absolutely fascinated him, as it does me. Joseph is my chosen Confirmation patron. Long time ago. I also spent time in NM when in the USAF in the 90s. Wish I’d have seen this. Thanks for this
Thank you St. Joseph for your magnificent mysterious work. We pray for your intercession to intervene in the many flys going through a rough phase & testing times. We pray for conversion ofcsouks.
AMAZING I'VE BEEN WORKING IN CARPENTRY FOR CLOSE TO 40 YEARS NOW. AND I DEFINITELY BELIEVE IT WAS .IF NOT MY SAINT JOSEPH. THEN A MASTER CARPENTER INSPIRED AND GUIDED BY SAINT JOSEPH. ITS SO WELL BUILT AND SO PERCIECED ,STRONG HARDWOOD. THAT IT SUPPORTS ITS SELF. LIKE A HOLLOWED OUT COLLUM. THAT MY ONLY GUESS. BUT WITH GOD NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE. AMAZING. Thanks for sharing. GOD BLESS .
Saint Joseph terror of demons, pray for us. Saint Joseph Patron of departing souls, pray for us. Saint Joseph Patron Saint of workers pray for us. Saint Joseph Head of the family, please pray for all our men, young and old, to be bold and courageous and walk in your footsteps leading us all to God🙏🏼
A lot of people try to deduce the reason why this Staircase remains standing but these are people that have yet to see it in person. My fiance's father is a carpenter and has been doing it for over 30 years and cannot figure out the staircase at all. We live in Albuquerque, so we visit Santa Fe and the Loretto church quite often. There is obvious support on the bottom and top but there's no visible support for the center. It's a truly magnificent piece of carpentry.
It is a truly magnificent piece of woodworking, I agree. I sometimes come across things I am unable at the time to figure out how they were made, like a computer, but does that mean all computers are miracles ? Sometimes they find a new species of bird, or a new plant, does that mean each time something new is discovered it must be a miracle ? Or is it simply a matter of what is "deemed" miraculous ? Then it is purely a matter of opinion. Or divine if the "right" person deems it so. Or because one, or even a few scientists couldn't (or at least "said" they couldn't) identify the species of wood used, how does that mean "not one scientist in the world" ? Because obviously not every scientist in the world has tried to identify it.
@@aylbdrmadison1051. I, actually was told while visiting the Chapel that it is a common wood found in the area but that it is very soft and brittle specially over time. I, do not remember the name of the wood used however. What makes this a miracle is the way this wood and carpentry work has stood the test of time and nobody has been able to replicate this. Yes now computers and even airplanes can and have been replicated dozens if not hundreds of times some even using the same materials. This staircase however has never been duplicated by even the most intelligent of minds using the same kinds of materials and stood any test of time or anything else. Just like the painting of the virgin Mary in Mexico city where the canvas used for the drawing has not decayed over 4 centuries this staircase has also not decomposed. It is indeed a miracle.
Mind blowing !..I am a born again Christian and l believe that this man could have been St. Joseph himself , because with God all things are possible !... glory to God . Amen !
Martin. You are blessed and privileged. I wish I could go and visit the church but I will settle with asking for the same favour for my eyes. Thank you for sharing.
'The Staircase' is a tv movie about the building of the Loreto staircase and stars Barbara Hershey. It is available on RU-vid indefinitely worth watching.
OOOOOOHHHH !!! MY GOODNESS !!! I WATCHED THIS VIDEO AND WAS SO DUMBFOUNDED !!!!! I WATCHED ANOTHER VIDEO AND WAS IN ABSOLUTE AWE !!!! WOW ! POW !! I AM SURE IT WAS ST.JOSEPH INDEED !!!! WONDERFUL STORY !!!! LOVED IT !! MANY THANKS FOR THE UP- LOAD . FROM (U.K.)
After I read this story n miracle. It was topmost on my wish list. When I visited my son in Atlanta last October, I told me to take me to this Chapel and witness the miracle. And he did. It was a wish n dream come true. I feel so blessed. I live in Mumbai , India. Praise God. It was memorable. I actually touched this staircase 😊❤
THIS would be worth seeing ! Amazing story of God answered prayer. It's ironic how like DNA it is, a religious staicase to a higher realm within the Church & built so long ago at a time of little human scientific knowledge, yet revealed to us, the basic structure or tool of our own creation, our own beginings BY & IN GOD. The spiraling staircase in our body is our DNA & the miraculous substance that holds all life together seems a mystery but indeed is our God & our faith in Him. It is our peace that passeth all understanding , to trust thru our faith the Divine Equation God imparts to us thru our body, a temple, & the structure we worship from... like our man-made church buildings where we fellowship in His Name above all others... this one Church with it's spiraling staircase & miraculous story is very profound . See how God yearns for His creation to believe in His existence & trust His love for all of mankind?! No one can force another to believe; it is a chosen decision to lean "in obedience to God" by faith. God holds together all His creations' spiraling stairway to Him. We ascend NOWHERE without Him, Amen, Amen & Amen.
Is this staircase representing the human DNA of Jesus or Mary. It says that there are 9+7 splices of wood in the staircase. This equals 16 the age of Mary when Jesus was born. The 9 splices of wood may represent the 9 months that she carried Jesus in her sacred womb. The 7 may represent the 7 sorrows of Mary. So this staircase may well describe the birth of Jesus and his life. I bet there are other references to the life of Jesus and Mary built in to its structure that have not yet been discovered.
If only they would have left it at it originality...no rails. The most amazing carpentry one man ever made!!!! only by the grace of the most majestic Carpenter! Thank You God, just WOW!!!
I heard this story some years back and to see this work of art.....it is mind blowing! Even though I would have liked to visit it for real, it still gives me a huge smile to know that GOD is still among us. Praying is as powerful weapon, which I wish all nations worldwide should do more often.
Its so amazing and breathtaking it was on Unsolved Mysteries. An unknown old master carpenter asked to build it for them. The mysterious old man left without being paid for his work. Any job mostly the time want to be paid for his/her job. The sisters searched for the unknown stranger everywhere and even talking to local people. He came, did his work, and then mysteriously vanished. Even expertise on wood work can't figure how he made this wooden staircase.
There are somethings in life we just don't know or understand. Only God Knows. Each most find God in his or her own way. No one can do that for any human being.
God sent down Saint Joseph to help and his work was his way of saying "I thank you for your prayers and I am greatly honored by God and he had heard your prayers and my work is my way of saying that God listens"
I am truly enamored with the history of this staircase. I have seen it a few time throughout my life, and I cannot get over the beauty of it. I do believe it was St. Joseph that built it, because it’s a complete miracle in every facet.
It is mysterious. There are things in this world that can not be explained. The fact that the nuns prayed and believed and someone came and built the staircase. It does not matter who the builder was. The fact is that SOMEONE received a message and came to their aid. And did not take payment. Was he rich already? doubt it. A builder of that talent would have had no shortage of work In America. He would have built something similar elsewhere, to be able to leave some kind of trade mark of his works He was not even looking for recognition. Very odd even a nobody would have like some recognition for his talents, and generosity
Except this can be and had been explained. It's made of poplar. It is anchored to a nearby column. It has a inner wooden stringer that also acts as a support pole. It's also pretty unsafe/unstable which is part of the reason people aren't allowed on it anymore.
People have claimed certain supports but not proven it, claimed it is spruce wood, others say it's poplar, but haven't proven what type of wood it is. No scientists have debunked this, it should have collapsed under its own weighg at the start witnout or witnout people walking up and down it. People have claimed it conceals this or that but how would they know if it's concealed?
Magnificent video. Well done. You make a compelling argument that the day's of miracle's has not ended. A testimony to faith and prayer. Thank you for so much inspiration. God's speed.
God can do ALL things, because he created Time, & all dimenions, out of Nothing by spoken word. Why would simple doing an impossible staircase from wood to answer prayers of faith filled NUNS be difficult? God honors and hears the prayers of the Faithful.
Katerina Love, you are right, it was St. Joseph who built it! I read the true story of it's History, the sisters prayed a 9 day novena prayer to St. Joseph for a staircase to be made possible to be built; on the 9th day a man showed up on a donkey with his carpentry tools & told the sister that he knew about their plight with their need for a staircase & he had come to offer them his assistance. He worked alone for several months using primitive carpentry tools; he hardly spoke, only did when he was spoken to. When he had completed the work he left quietly without telling anyone; the nuns looked everywhere for him wanting to pay him for the work & to thanked for the most beautiful staircase they had ever seen but could not find him anywhere. Nobody knew who he was, never seen him before nor ever heard of him! The nuns discovered 3 surprising things: 1] there was no central pillar in which to secure the staircase; the staircase seem to be suspended in midair but yet it was functional to be used without the staircase falling apart! 2] there are 33 steps on the staircase after they counted them, representing the 33 yrs of Jesus' life on earth, & 3] the wood that he used for the staircase came from Palestine in Jerusalem! The 3rd was told to them by the professional engineers, architects & scientists who had come to investigate the much talked about miraculous spiral staircase! The sisters therefore concluded that their unknown carpenter who had helped them built their staircase was non other than St. Joseph himself! Unfortunately due to the financial crisis at that time, the Chapel had to be sold; so in the present day the Chapel is no longer, it is now a museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico with the Miraculous Spiral Staircase as it's masterpiece of attraction!
Anne Hector....he completed it very quick and then went away without paid (not months). But it took 6 until 8 months if it built these days using modern tools and technology according to architects...
I have only seen the photographs in the video just now, and as a former carpenter I know a few things about building spiral staircases. I know something else too; it is impossible to make the round balusters that support the handrail with just a t-square and an saw, not to mention the stair rails. So he at least had a string, a plumb bob, Chisels, planes, a draw knife and some other hand tools. As well as a block and tackle, and some means to measure; all common carpenters tools in that era. The story has been embellished over the years. Everybody always overlooks the simple solution. It is in the pegs and the way the balusters are joined to the stringers. It isn't the weight on the base but the weight on the blocking at the top. But the real genius is how the pieces are joined, and how the hand rail is used as a support piece. It isn't the steps or the two circles that are important. The steps were determined by the height of the choir loft, and the diameter of the staircase was determined by the available space. I would like to see it in person, because I see an masterpiece of the craft, where function meets art.
Seems something of a stretch for the architect of a major construction of this sort not to have realized and planned for a way to connect two important spaces. Discounting the asserted miraculous construction of the staircase, it is a beautiful thing to behold, so perfect in it’s structure and symmetry. Wonderful!
We had an iron circular stairway in our place in California, with that center thingy.... This wooden work of art is so far beyond anything I've ever seen.... Proof that miracles do indeed...exist.
St,Joseph I pray that nothing is impossible for you so please come and help me to manage my daily work so I could give happiness to all the people in my office . I believe in you in the name of Jesus your beloved son . Amen
Amazing, wood moves with moisture and gravity, as a woodworker I can’t even imagine how he got such strong structure and perfect curves. St Joseph for sure
Another story is that it was completed on Christmas Eve. Before that when the sisters were decorating the crib for Christmas, they couldn't find the statue of St Joseph but on the evening of 24th the Mother Superior was walking past the çrib she noticed the statue and nobody ķnew or could explain how it got there. I had a book about it which was recently stolen from my flat. St Joseph pray for us!💜💜💜💜💜💜💜🙏
Amazing story and true. Whether you are a Christian or an unbeliever makes no difference. It's still there today and defies the laws of physics. Uplifting as well..
I think so, too. When you walk into this little chapel, you can FEEL the Sacred Presence of the saints, and Jesus. If anyone can go .. be sure to. Hotel prices drop after September, when school is back in. :)
You do a diservice to the very mortal professional who actually built the structure. No, no miracles here, just late 19th century craftmenship which even today remains difficult to reproduce. I will continue concede to an answer to faithful prayers.
@@jamesbaldwin7676 No one knows the identity of the stranger who worked for several months to build the staircase. Moreover, architects said that by the laws of gravity, the staircase would have collapsed if anyone stepped on it. But it didn't. There was even a picture where all the members were occupying the whole staircase. I believe that, objectively speaking, it is a miracle. And I believe that the staircase was built by St. Joseph.
There was only one hand rail on the right side of the stairs . They later added the left hand rail . This is one amazing story. I actually saw the movie about it. You should see the movie if you haven't yet.
It’s quite simple. The stairs are supported by a steel runner under the steps. The wood was imported...not difficult at that time. A huge amount of wood was imported to the USA. The spindles can be turned on a foot lathe as done in North Africa and elsewhere.
Christian Nightcore . We do know about how the staircase came about surely? The nuns said a carpenter built it. One has to remember that both Protestant and Catholic religions made vast amounts of money from “relics” and myths, such as bleeding statues, and still do! The scriptures are quite clear about images or objects that detract from the worship of God. Look at what God did to the Israelites who built the Golden calf for instance, just as Moses brought down the 10 commandments, the first commandment being...? Generally, people like to believe in stories such as the one here about a staircase - that’s fine for those who think like footballers who cross themselves thinking a God is interested in their game, or in athletes jumping, but the Bible, the very guidebook of their “faith” is seldom read. This is the way of things. By all means enjoy the mystery. The staircase is a beautiful work of art. If it’s true, why are people calling it a miracle when it is God that created the mathematical laws by which it stands? In truth, architecturally, the staircase is supported by the inner spiral and which is probably a a foot square, jointed as it curves. The Japanese have been doing joints like this for centuries. From the spiral come the spokes like that of a wheel, supporting the runners. On the other side is an equally strong spiral. A pole up the middle, such as we see today, is just a quick way of doing it, but is not essential. There are many free standing stairways today, and some have been in more elegant houses for hundreds of years. It’s not so much a miracle from God, but a use of His mathematical laws!
what do these stairs tell us? 1. Prayers (or novena) in honor of St. Jozef calls for his help 2. Devotion to St. Joseph is like these stairs, they lead up to God and to heaven
Beautiful story, no doubt St Joseph ( the gentleman he is) came to the sisters aid. Either himself or sent a very capable carpenter to them - is up for debate. My husband’s a craftsman and has worked on large building projects, he can’t figure out how that staircase has been standing for centuries.
