St. Edmund Campion was a promising young scholar who had a comfortable life ahead of him in the academic world. His wit, intellect, and eloquence made him a popular figure at Oxford, garnering the attention of Queen Elizabeth and her advisors. All his career aspirations as a scholarly clergyman would fall into place, if he would simply reject the ancient faith and follow the Church of England. However, there was a problem- his conscience. He could never fully embrace the Protestant changes after studying the Church Fathers. Eventually traveling to Europe to enter a diocesan seminary, he would later change course by pilgrimaging to Rome and joining the Jesuits. When the general superior began sending priests to re-evangelize England, Edmund Campion knew what lay ahead. Eager to do the Lord’s will, he spent the last year and a half of his life in dedicated service to Christ and his Holy Catholic Church by attending to Catholics and preaching the Gospel. Ultimately, he would be captured, imprisoned, sentenced, and executed. Thus, St. Edmund Campion became one of the 40 Martyrs of England and Wales, shedding his blood and giving all for the Kingdom of God.
