This is where the French ship Medusa was heading when it wrecked on a sandbar. It's a horrific story and some survivors had to go through the Sahara to get here. They had the help of Moors. I think it was 1816. I could be wrong about that though. The Governorship was switching from the English to the French after Napolean was defeated.
