Only thing better than playing this organ is to have the master, Daniel Roth, be the registrant, anticipating and opening/closing stops precisely when you need them to be! I hate he’s retired now, but he earned it!
Its so fun to see him play because usually you dont see the titulars or other famous posts in Paris playing each other’s instruments like this. Its awesome
Of all the amazing things about this (of which there are many) it's that the organ doesn't run out of wind--at all--during the biggest, loudest parts. I keep waiting for the wind to sag, hoping it won't, and being so pleased that the wind can keep up with the demands. Maybe I'm just used to organs where the wind supply is barely adequate. The St. Sulpice organ is so strong. So great.
You know you're in the right place when you see a master like Daniel Roth turning the pages for somebody else. Olivier Latry is a god of the keyboard. Sometimes I'd rather hear his improvisations than what's on the program.
I'm sure these two guys have ESP. They don't say a word but Roth is anticipating Latry's every need with the stop changes and, I guess, introducing some that even Latry may not have thought of. Two minds of their calibre at one instrument. Bloody marvellous!
This extremely special and refined instrument seems to me capable of receiving over its keys all the possible organ literature - past - present - and future.
The sight of Daniel Roth sitting right beside him, pulling stops and turning pages without a murmur, is awesome! I'm sure there are any number of other organists who either wouldn't even think of doing such a thing (it would be beneath them!), or who certainly couldn't do it half as well! Bravo! Tres magnifique!!
I toured Paris and her churches/organs with my organ professor a few years back, and we met several of the major organists in the area, including both Latry and Roth. I enjoyed them both very much; they were very nice. But I have to say, Mr. Roth was one of the most delightful little men I have ever met. He truly made an impact on me-and, talk about a skilled organist!
FINALLY Reger has been performed in France, and on the most magnificent Cavaille-Coll Organ!! I've been waiting a long time for this to happen! Thanks Mssrs. Oliver Latry & Daniel Roth! (Very few realize what a teamwork this was. Cavalle-Coll organs have no memory levels, settable combination actions, or crescendo pedal. EVERYTHING has to be done by hand, and it takes several people to get it right).
Once again, absolutely wonderful. I have heard this piece performed many times, but never with such feeling! The quiet passages I find nostalgic, particularly in the acoustics of St Sulpice. Wonderful performance!
+Roberr Risk Generally, Max Reger's music modulates quickly and continually which distresses me greatly. I can handle this opus because: (1) the cantus firmus in the pedal provides tonal stability, (2) its minor key and slow 3/4 rhythm are reminiscent of Bach's great Passacaglia in C minor, and (3) this performer could probably make any piece of music sound inspired. What an unusual trinity of Reger, Roth and Latry flanked by two registration cherubs.
That was OUTSTANDING! One of the best things I've seen on RU-vid! Serious! I've been to St. Sulpice & heard Daniel Roth right there next to him, as well as Olivier Latry at Notre Dame. To see them paired up, or should I say teamed up, and with all four of them, the were able to make that piece come to life. BRAVO!!
I doesn't get much better than this. What a wonderful video of a fantastic performance. Long may this magnificent instrument remain in all of its pre-computerized glory. The sight of Roth and the other two assistants, working in concert with Latry, is not only fascinating, but deeply moving. Latry makes Reger sing! -MAS
Besides sounding just a feast for the senses, the visuals of how difficult it is to manage that fully manual organ with very unique registration layouts for feet and stops. It took me some time to feel (almost) comfortable with it. Four registration assistants for hands AND feet!! Totally cool. Thanks for the post.
What a thrill and a delight to see these two maestros together. Superb playing by M.Latry and like a duet with M.Roth on stops.....and all on one of world's great organs. Bravo!
+ds1868 says: _"St Sulpice is a local parish church, not a cathedral."_ Who cares what the religious myth's personnel are? I am referring to how live the space is.
It's an EARGASMIC performance in all manor of listening - an absolutely fantastic expression and command by Olivier Latry of being in touch with the music ( as usual! )
He is the leading organist of one of the most important cathedrals in the world and this video shows us why. Latry is one piece of talent, in full control over the pieces he is playing and he actually didn't need the score to perform. Fantastic !
The great Reger's great Introduktion und Passacaglia d moll, an obvious tribute to the great Bach's great BWV 582 Passacaglia by the great Latry on the great St. Sulpice organ.
Watching Latry playing REGER is impressive...before Dupont was the only French organist i knew who plays reger. Hopefully on some day we will hear regers "BACH" op. 46 from Notre Dame with Full organ ;)
Hubert Heinrich
Oh my! I echo all the other comments about having Latry and Roth together, at Roth's instrument. But what about the concluding passages, with all five manuals mechanically coupled! That required considerable finger and wrist power and subtlety. An absolute masterpiece of composition, registration selection, and performance, not to forget stop-changing. As it's 20 April 2019, today, I wonder where Latry and his co-titulaires will be playing for the duration.
