The dbz kai version has different music because we couldn't figure out how to get the regular kai version but the dialogue is still the same. If you watched Kai before you know what the music sounds like in these scenes but let me know which dub you would've picked for each scene.
I wish that Kai had gone all the way back to the beginning and started at the beginning of the original Dragon Ball and gone all the way to the end of Z. So that way we would have a streamlined and consistent version of the ENTIRE original series prior to Super. They even could have given it a more marketable American title like "Dragon Ball Rise" or something.
Also an improvement the anime made over the manga, as the Kame House group’s reaction isn’t in Toriyama’s original writing. It really helps add to the drama of the scene.
The Kai dub just has better delivery and timing compared to the Z dub. I feel like all the voice actors who stayed the same across both dubs are objectively more skilled now, which makes it much easier to listen to imo.
Kai is clearly made more for children as indicated by the overuse of musical cues and dialogue that's more focused on setting up the story than deepening the characters, which flattens emotional impact by telling you how to feel about what's happening on-screen and why so it can save time. In contrast, the Z dialogue tells you more how the characters feel and what they want, with understated music that lets you feel everything on your own. Reminds me of how the most talented directors use music sparingly because they don't need it. These audio choices makes the scenes hit harder, especially the action. Also, Z Goku's lines sound tougher and more confident. I don't think this betrays his "character development" or arc because when Goku has to fight he literally becomes a different, more focused person. His lack of sounding exhausted or tired indicates his mastery of Qi compared to his overly eager enemies like early Vegeta.
We need a version with Kai’s animation and dub…but has the Z soundtrack of Faulconer Even though some of the scenes in Kai (Vegeta offering Goku / kamehameha over powering the Galick gun) had the Faulconer score
Honestly, they should’ve kept it in Kai. 9,000 feels more impactful, and it’s more memorable in the eyes of the Western fandom anyway. Hell, “over 8,000” could just mean 9,000 for all we know.
@@thefilmwatcher1302 it couldn't, because Vegeta's power level was around 18,000 in the Saiyan Saga, which is why Goku still wasn't stronger than him with one Kaio-Ken. If Goku's power level was 9,000 one Kaio-Ken would have been enough to match Vegeta. Only after going x3 did Goku become stronger. And the reason he needed to go x4 against the Galick Gun is because the Galick Gun is stronger than the regular Kame-hame-ha.
In the Original DBZ and manga, before the farmer can say a word to Raditz, Raditz says “These creatures in this planet are still alive. Kakarot has failed us!” and “So… the inhabitants of this world are still alive. Curse that Kakarrot!” But in DBZ Kai, Raditz didn’t say that at all after arriving.
I grew up with the original Dragon Ball Z as well but I have to say that Dragon Ball Kai had the better dialogue because the voice actor over the years had improve. Plus the english dubbed was more faithful to the manga and the Japanese counterpart. In DBZ Kai it's also a lot more swearing😂 lol!
Interestingly, this is probably closer than comps for other sagas will be because the Funimation dub of the Saiyan & Namek Sagas actually came out last, after GT even if I remember right. So the actors were all VERY settled in at least and they might have switched to digital recording by then allowing for more takes like they had in Kai. Of course if this were the actual original dub from Ocean Group this would be a sweep almost for Kai lol
It’s funny how many people complain about Goku’s reason for letting Vegeta go because he wants to fighting him again, instead of believing that there is good in him, when people forget that Kai depict Goku’s character, while Z dub’s Goku is taking the persona of Superman
I grew up with both dubs, and I always find kai to be the superior dub. But there were admittedly some scenes that dbz dub did better. This video gave me a little more appreciation for the dbz dub (at least for the Saiyan saga).
People hate on Z for no reason. I’ve literally just watched both back to back and Kai just does not deliver on so many key scenes like Z did. It’s superior for me but everyone is entitled to their opinions.
@@enzog1078I'd say it's the other way around, where more of the hate goes towards kai just because of nostalgia. That's not the case for me, my sister, and most of my friends. Z is fine, but I prefer kai.
I do have the say: the moment where Gohan bursts out of the space pod, demonstrates his hidden power, and headbutts Raditz in the chest is way more epic to me in Z. "Gohan wants his hat back" playing in the background, the genuine terror and bewilderment in Raditz' voice with his scouter reading ("Power level 1370?! Impossible for a kid! And... it's still going up!!"), and how much more painful it sounds when Raditz is struck. He's outright _screaming._ I also think the delivery of "Leave my dad.... **ALOOOOOOOONE!!!**" with Gohan's burst of power was more intense than Kai's counterpart.
Serious question, you've compared the scores, even had several of your ratings ultimately be dictated by the scores, but where are you getting THIS score of DBZK from? The Kai dub you're using is literally using the Bruce Falconer OST which belongs to DBZ, NOT DBZK. I've listened to the Yamato and the rerelease that used the original DBZ score (the score that's used in many of the DBZ clips you used) and I've never heard the Bruce Falconer music that's used in your DBZK clips. That seems intentionally unfair Plus you gave DBZ a point just cause it had "it's over 9000" as a line despite it not being manga accurate and you yourself admiring it wasn't as well performed
@@stokilo18 in kai they sound scripted and dialogue is over stuffed .its not a natural conversation. Sounds like a shaspearan play in kai half the time.its annoying
@@wingedhussar1453 id rather a script that's far more accurate to the source material and all of the corny, cheesiness that is the original. " Ally to good, nightmare to you" Or Vegeta saying things like "great galaxy" Yea... Cause that's so much more natural than using big words
One thing I wish it showed was Tien's blast to Nappa. Another heavy point for the Z dub. Well he didn't say the attack name, Burgmeier nailed that scene in the first go. And honestly, Tien yelling out of frustration made way more sense because he obvious couldn't think straight.
Awesome video man, although it sounds like this version of Kai has the Faulconer score which is very interesting, where did you find it? And could we get a link to it, I personally think Kai dialogue with Faulconer music is peak.
When it comes to saiyan saga, i will always prefer the og z. Frieza saga goes to kai easily. Cell saga is a tough toss but overall gohans voice in Z takes the edge. Buu saga is a mix. Cant decide honestly.
OK let me clear something up Goku’s official power level according to the Dragon Ball Densu was 8000 not 9000 the first dub in Dragon Ball Z made a mistake
It's actually because the writers for the ocean dub thought that over 9000 fit better with the lip movement, and the writers at funimation when they were making the orange bricks wanted the voice acting to be more consistent with the later arcs, but they stuck faithfully to the original lines of the ocean dub(most of the time), could be wrong tho so correct me if I'm wrong 😅
I could’ve sworn I heard the track “To Those Who Meet Their End” for Yamcha’s death. Was that another one of Yamamoto’s plagiarisms? Edit: I should’ve read the pinned 💀
As much as I love the Z Faulconer score, and a number of the epic moments/speeches in Z are stronger....and Z is a meme factory....it is hard for "score, some speeches, and memes" to justify 124 additional episodes of content for the overall show. Especially when that 124 additional episodes of content is almost entirely filler...a good portion of which creat continuity issues. And compounded by the fact that the OVERALL dub for Z is not only of an overall lower level of performance and accuracy, but it is also a more inconsistent Dub. Because Zs performances and Dub evolved over time, and then early portions were later redubbed or revised to various degrees...the final result for the full 291 episodes is actually quite inconsistent in quality of performance within itself. The advantages Z has over Kai are hard to use to justify the extra 124 episodes. A dub that is SOMETIMES better but generally worse performed and less accurate to the source material, as well as being less consistent within itself. A score that is overall cooler A ton of filler. Kai is the version that is much more consistent within itself AND is also incredibly consistent with Super. Considering that The Final Chapters also goes to 16x9 and has the Sumitomo score...that makes it EVEN MORE of a transition to Super which is 16x9 and has a Sumitomo score. My heart will always prefer aspects of Z, but there is no way to logically argue for it.
I kinda agree with you. It's FunnyMation's fault, that they gave only the first two sagas the "Ultimate Uncut" treatment.. while giving less treatment for the later sagas. Either 1) redub all the way through 2) Emulate the 1999 emulations of the ocean Dub cast, or 3) Leave the sagas/series TF ALONE, and NOT advertise your product as "consistent" if you're not actually going to be consistent ! FunnyMation always trying to ice skate uphill 😒
I'm gonna have to disagree by far OG Z is way better in comparison, the second point you awarded Kai should've went to Z as it shows how much he cares for Gohan. It still conveys that Krillin and him are best friends even more so. He wouldn't just be asking just anybody to watch over his child, it would be his best friend. It still shows just how much of bond him and Krillin. Still goodish video, I can tell you put some hard work into it. Keep it up
I get you man But naw that Kamehameha vs Galick Gun scene is perfect in Z for me Mainly because of the x4 scene King Kai told him not to go over a double. He's already at x3. Then he decides to go x4 I really love the pause of Goku thinking "I have to take it further..." Screaming: "KAIOKEEEEEEEN.." Cut to King Kai: "NO! GOKU!" Cut back to Goku: "TIMES FOOOUUURRR!!" THAT TIMING WITH THE EXPLOSION IS SO HYPE I'M POPPIN OFF JUST TYPING IT OUT
Ocean for the win! (never actually saw kai! Or any funi dub of the saiyan saga, so i can't vote) But it was interesting seeing the differences and similarities
@@KeyReviewsOfficial any home dvd or bluray of dbz has the ocean dub on it. they are still not as good as the original broadcasts but the closest you will likely get.
I disagree with a lot of things. The "Over 9,000" from Z here is not the Ocean Dub, and both the non-Ocean Z and Kai say "Over 9,000", so I don't know why you gave that point to Z automatically without any comment, unless you don't know the difference between that and the Ocean dub. In fact, Kai mimics the Ocean Dub better (if you are into that, and if you're not, you need to explain, because your choice went without any explanation. No mention was made that Goku's chest in Kai (at 4:20) was slightly bruised, and in DBZ, it was a gaping hole, as it should be. This alone ruins that scene for Kai, no matter what else happens. Those are just of the two more obvious examples where I disagree.
What is up with your side by sides? The music for Kai just isn’t correct at all. Also the music choice for your commentary is just weird it doesn’t fit the topic at all.
@@KeyReviewsOfficialI prefer the official Kikuchi score for Kai even though it is repetitive, but so was Yamamoto's score for the Saiyan and Namek arcs. Either one you choose is fine.
Only issue with this video is that faulconer score is in Kai. Doesn't fit at all. And to remind me, the Saiyan Saga was REDUBBED for the dvd's. This wasn't the original Funimation dub Sayian Saga. IT was considerably worse. As a result, this redub sayian Saga is much closer to Dbz Kai than the original dub.
Overall z sounds the best on average espevialy with faulcner score it just fits bettere even ki uses faylcner score here. Also the conversarion in dbz is how real people talk while evrything in dbkai is shakespearon like a script play .that is not how normal people talk. In kai he replies to whats happening instead of no you cant which is replying to a conversation. Conversations in dbz are just more natural in that context
Idk the track but I think it's from the faulconer score. I think the same song plays when goku sacrifices himself against cell so maybe they'll make it easier to find
I prefer Z no matter what, Kai did good on certain screams/ Dub/Accurate to manga But Z as it’s own thing is still as good, Z has cool screams and it’s own dialogue and the SOUNDTRACKS MY GOD bring them back, Kai ones are good (I can’t lie I never listened to 65% of the Kai soundtracks and I dislike the jingle bells and prefer drum stick and guitar techno, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t good it’s just not my taste, I’m sure millions love the Kai soundtracks) I can agree certain scenes early along we’re pretty bad but I prefer the dialogue not the voice acting)
@@KeyReviewsOfficialFrom the start of the video I had a feeling you were gonna say Kai is better, but watching the whole video , you did play fair with the original vs the kai
