Sakhile Dube, one of the owners and guide at Safari And Surf Wilderness Adventures explain why some Zulu family names are named after African animals.
His own surname, "Dube", translates to Zebra. According to ancient beliefs, this was done in order for families to feel a responsibility to protect these animals. Sakhile was out on a Guided Walking Safari in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, St Lucia, South Africa when the film was taken.

So true. Same thing in Zimbabwe across the border. We have family totems named after animals. It means a family can not kill, eat or hunt that animal. Our family totem is the porcupine, and other families with have buffalo (nyathi), eland (mhofu), lion (shumba) etc. It was our African way of protecting wildlife resources from being over hunted. We had beliefs like it was taboo to kill a very big python or elephant and so on. Obviously to allow it to pass on its superior genes to next generation. Thanks

Thank you for generously sharing all the knowledge you have about your homeland with us. Africa is an UNFORGETTABLE continent. I lived in Rhodesia almost 50 years ago and still remember the unique smell of the place. It was a hot dry smell, a little acidic yet a little sweet. I would love to come back, at age 72, that is unlikely. You help me remember 🥰

Very interesting videos, I really like them. One suggestion if I may (although I guess this is a bit hard due to video cutting): I feel the clips are ending too fast, without a proper ending. Maybe say some final words like some "goodbye, see you next time", would make it more wholesome I think :)

Cool channel. Absolutely lovely cultural stories about the stewards of our origins. Thanks for this, man. And your ancestors for having the foresight to realize there are treasures in the world that must be protected in order to protect us all in the future. Until your surname story, I never considered that these animals and living things were intentionally being protected by the people for millennia.
