The church at Sakskøbing on Lolland was built in the late 13th century as a late Romanesque brick church with a nave, chancel and apse. The massive, square west tower was added in the late Gothic period.

Sakskøbing is a small town in the north-east of Lolland. It was first mentioned in 1240. In the early Baroque period, it lost a great deal of its importance and consequently fell into a state of rapid decline; in the 18th century there were also several town fires. This changed at the turn of the century; in 1855, the town had over 1,000 inhabitants for the first time, compared to just 272 in 1672. The town continued to grow after the sugar factory closed in 1991 and now has a population of just under 4,550.
