Turn the subtitles on. Presenter Neil Clingerman covers the masters of cinematic realism.
We also wanted to show more of Okiura's effects animation (e.g. the chopper attack scene from Patlabor 2) but we cut it in the interest of time. We also decided it would be a bad idea to open the panel with his cut from Evangelion 3.33. As a director, Okiura's most recent film is the Ghibli-esque "A Letter to Momo", which is worth seeing for its absurdly precise character animation.
The use of copyrighted clips in this video is fair use, as the clips are limited length at web resolution, attributed in captions, and used for the explicit purpose of criticism.

Hideaki Anno didn't beg, Ghibli was in need of animators so they publicly were hiring animators for Nausicaa and when Anno approached the studio, Miyazaki was so impressed with his work that he gave him one of the most important scenes of the movie.

They came pretty close to talking about another incredibly influential animator: Takashi Nakamura Nakamura was responsible for Akira having the "Disney style" in the characters' movements, placing a lot of emphasis on body language when speaking, which is very foreign to the Japanese. Even Nakamura imposed a curious modulation of frames in which 1 or 2 extra drawings are added to animated sequences in 2s, 3s or 4, completely changing the flow of movement and bringing it closer to Disney's smooth animation. Hiroyuki Okiura, Toshiyuki Inoue, Hideki Hamasu, Kouichi Arai and many other animators got their realistic approach from working under Nakamura's supervision.

We did it at Anime Central because it's local. This panel gave us something to do at our local con. Our feeling is that we'd have to be flown out, travel & lodging paid, to be convinced to do it elsewhere.

Kind of a spoiler but I wish they would have shown one of the later scenes from Aku no Hana as well, like the classroom scene, which was amazing imo. (also read the manga it's great.) Also thank you for uploading this panel, it was really interesting.

Rotoscoping has its time and place. I actually feel Flowers of Evil used it quite effectively. It managed to take advantage of the actors giving what would be normally a low budget high school drama more dramatic tension. The slimy unnatural look actually enhanced the adolescent dread that the series oozed. Likewise I'm also a fan of Scanner Darkly and Waking life. Bakshi didn't use it well.

Colin's segments are the easiest to produce by far as they tend to involve just a single, long video at the end. So yeah.

Very interesting stuff being talked about, but it's quite hard to hear since the video footage they are talking about is a lot louder, which is strange since you guys are talking about the animation and the panel talk is somewhere far in the backround.

Is there any information as to whether or not the Bebop movie opening involved live-action reference? I assume The Yoshinari segment mentions his effects, his affection and influence from western cartoons (specifically cartoon network), and LWA? I have to say that it's great that we get to see the panelists up close as opposed 30 feet away with a nokia phone camera that has mustard stains on the lens. Thanks again.

Heh, it was aimed at an adult audience and was mostly satire with a realistic style. It did have some crude humor though ;)

Were they rotoscoped? No. Were they heavily video referenced? Yes. A distinction without much of a difference.

Yes I do. Direct Video referencing is for chumps and hacks. Although of course some talented animators have used it, such as at disney. It's hard to know, since they are generally somewhat embarrassed to admit it. It's better to do as Takeshi Koike did, like he mentioned during the world record commentary, he watched many videos of sprinters, went through frame by frame analyzing, but he did not ref them directly. That was only to learn, and the final animation is 100% from his head. Too many lazy/untalented people out there who want to take shortcuts.
@chopb6887
@chopb6887 9 лет назад
Oh, ok, if you're going to add the adj "direct" in front of video reference, your point is more clarified. My point was unlike the method of rotoscoping, which is usually tracing, implementing a visual style, and cleaning up, the method of video referencing has more space to add a lot of creative psyche and energy because the drawer must come up with a unique methodology to process motion.The video on youtube of Miyazaki-sensei figuring out how Ashitaka falls and tumbles down the slope truly gives insight to a passionate methodology in depicting movement (He relies only on memory and reenacting in this case though). But as you said, the results of straight-up copies without brewed understanding and transcendental conveyance are boring. Thanks for clearing up!

But thats not what Hiroyuki Okuira does. He is nicknamed "animation god" in the anime industry. I don't think animators will look up to him this much if he can only animate with heavily referencing videos.. Go check his new short "robot on the road" from animator expo, i don't suppose he built a robot mask and took video of it. Every animator reference from videos, but not to any extent that you can say its close to rotoscoping. The 3d illusions are all made with years of hard working and talent.
