imo maybe the reason they're being called Zuha and Kkura is because Koreans are used to names being two syllables? (e.g Chae-Won, Yun-Jin, Eun-Chae) so when they encounter longer names like Sakura's and Kazuha's, they made a shorter nickname, probably either out of habit or convenience
@Jakeschwag

I'm Korean and that's exactly the reason! (2 syllable names)
@eatcarpet
@eatcarpet Год назад
Shortening a name isn't uncommon but what they're not used to is they shorten it from the end instead of the beginning. So Sakura is typically Saku-chan or Sa-chan, while Kazuha is a bit unique because shortening it to Kazu-chan or Ka-chan would sound weird (Kazu is more a masculine name and Ka-chan literally means "mom"). So Kazuha shortened would be more Kacchan or Ha-chan.

I guess since their ears are more attuned to Japanese, hearing their Korean nicknames with the Korean pronunciation/accent makes Kkura and Zuha sound very different compared to their full names Sakura and Kazuha
@deuwdrop
@deuwdrop Год назад
That and I believe Japanese people often make nickname still based on the kanji of the name. Like, if we're gonna break down the Kazuha's name, it should be Kazu + Ha instead of Ka + Zuha and Sakura's name should be Saku + Ra instead of Sa + Kura. So hearing Korean just disregard the kanji and went on with "Kkura" and "Zuha" must be really awkward and funny 🤣🤣
@metamon2704

I completely understand how weird it must’ve felt to have their names shortened to the last two syllables as Japanese people. Being a semi-otaku and being just generally interested in Japanese culture, I don’t think I’ve ever heard Japanese names being shortened to anything but the first whatever number of syllables (usually it’s one or two). For English speaking people, it would be the same feeling if you shortened some name like Christopher into Topher instead of Chris, you’d be like wtf Edit: turns out Topher can be a legitimate nickname for Christopher, the more you know

I think I get why Kazuha has an easier time. Sakura is good at Korean after a few years but she’s still been more accustomed to hearing Japanese pronunciation of her name and didn’t really start interacting with foreign language until she learned about produce. In the final group, when she was the only one with those vowel sounds present in the group, she wouldn’t really need to focus to recognize the odd name out but now it’s the odd pronunciation of her name mixed with the odd pronunciation of a name with the same pattern. Kazuha acknowledging that the way it’s shorted is weird but she can tell the difference when called makes me think that spending her teens hearing different accents say her name in different ways just makes it easier in general for her to pick out the sounds even when they’re a bit off
@mindfulhustle
@mindfulhustle Год назад
u r right bc Kazuha traveled to foreign countries in her teenage years and even had a Korean roommate in the Netherlands."
@ysf-d9i
@ysf-d9i 10 месяцев назад
It could also be because sakura is more used to people pronouncing her name in weird ways. I always turn my head because I thought I heard my name even in public places where no one knows me (and my name is 100% unique) because it's a Chinese name, and so here in Canada, no one knows how to pronounce it and literally everyone pronounces it differently. So there's a huge range of sounds which I've ended up connecting as being "possibly how someone would say my name"
@bopete3204

I've also had the problem of similar sounding names lol. For me it was in sports teams, there'd be yelling from across the field and I'd be confused who was being called.

It's because the consonant sound [z] is not a native sound in Korean and almost always poses a challenge for its corect pronunciation. Even though it's transliterated into the roman alphabet as "zuha" the hangul they use is ㅈ, which is closer to the consonant sound [dʒ] in English, like how you would pronounce the j in "judge" or dg in "bridge." Meanwhile, Japanese has the [z] sound natively. The Korean staff informing Sakura must have pronounced "zuha" with the Korean pronounciation. No native Japanese speakers would mistake the [z] sound if it's in Japanese.

Korean names are made up of 3 syllables. The first syllable is the surname and the other 2 syllables are the given name. So often, in the case of friendly foreigners, if the name is 3 syllables, the last 2 syllables are taken and called as a nickname like a Korean name. This is a Korean-style light joke with the meaning of accepting the person as a member of the community.

If they shortened by her first two syllables instead, they would call her kazuya.

Kazuha being Zuha, Sakura being Kkura, Hikaru being Karu and Mashiro being Shiro... The Japanese girls might just remember this over their real names after a while... Makes sense why JYPE named TWICE's J-line with only two Syllabus each and four letters in their names.😭

Nahhh. Twice's J-line is just a coincidence. Momo, Sana and Mina are their true names.

@@thikez3143 yeah two syllable names are quite uncommon for Japanese, most people there are three syllables.

Those are J-lines real names.

@@thikez3143 Many people confuse their real names to be their stage name 😂😂 Honestly in 2017 when I first got interested in Twice I really thought J-line haven't revealed their actual names yet but then later got to know that those names are their actual names & not stage names😂

This reminds me of in school I would turn my head when ppl would call Tyler bc my brain first heard the “yl” (sounds like “isle”). It’s not similar to the name Kylie but it also is lol

Sakura slurs and mumbles a lot so it makes sense that it worries her when other people do the same and you can't hear properly lol

Korean names typically consist of three syllables. The first syllable represents the family name, while the second and third syllables indicate the given name. Ex) Huh Yunjin Among friends, they address each other using only their given name, omitting the family name. This is why Kazuha is often called Zuha in Korea. 😂 Even though “Ka” is not her family name.

Just think, if they didn't kick Haruka (u may know her from the rigged show "R U Next") out from the original line up it would have been, Ruka, Zuha, and Kura! 😂

Low-key I guess no surprise that the kpop industry is fairly disrespectful of both Japanese and Chinese names, with Chinese names they pronounce them like a baby would.

It's not even close to being disrespectful. Kazuha and particularly, Sakura like their Korean nicknames. Even, Kelly Clarkson asked Tzuyu, how to properly pronounce her name and asked how they wanted them to address her. And, Tzuyu said it in the Korean way.
