Today we'll be discussing two evaluations and recommendations for patients with salicylate intolerance. Salicylates are plant defense chemicals found in plants and can cause various symptoms like nausea, swelling, rashes, dizziness, and sinus congestion. To rule out a suspicion of salicylate intolerance, I use organic acid testing from Great Plains Labs. If it's chronic, testing is a good way to rule things in and out. The first evaluation is testing your urinary pH, which needs to be quite alkaline to effectively eliminate salicylates through the kidneys and urine. If your urinary pH is more acidic than 6.5, it's too acidic, and you're not going to be effectively eliminating salicylates. The second evaluation is sulfate levels in your body. The sulfur metabolism pathway can get really junked up and stop working well. We want a good robust sulfate system, and we can work with things like magnesium, calcium, potassium, and sodium to boost alkaline minerals. I hope this video helps you understand salicylate intolerance better.
