At the time of our visit in 2011, forage seed grower, Ken Miller told us about a grass variety that was registered in 2004 that does very well on saline or salty soils. The variety known as AC Saltender is a type of intermediate wheat grass that will flourish in soils where only weed grasses like Foxtail Barley and Kochia prevail. See several examples of the crop on the Miller farm.

Good that people could turn something that's usually a weed into something useful. I feel like it would be better to have some sea peas or other salt-tolerant legume as well to get some nitrogen, and maybe also some brassicas (those also do well with salt and are good animal feed).

Think it's always good to do a blend and not rely on just one species, Gabe Brown talks about that allot.

@@piperdoug428 Very true. If you have a crop failure on just one thing, your livestock should not starve. You'll also get better growth on mixed pasture.

@@hasnain787 You should look into washing the salt out of your soil via irrigation. If your water is too salty, you could investigate a reverse osmosis setup (though it may be too expensive). One way to speed up washing the salt out of your soil is by liming it. The calcium in the limestone replaces the sodium in the soil and makes it easier for the sodium to come out of the soil. Read "More Food From Soil Science" by Victor Teidjens for more info.

@@owendavies8227 we have sweet water. But we want some grass to grow in those lands to get fodder for our cows and goats. In this way we can get rid of exrra salts and get some grass to feed our animals. Reverse osmosis will be very much expensive.

Grass like this should probably be grown along the coastline of Louisiana to prevent soil erosion.
