Filmed in June 2002 at Studio 1 Broadcasting House, Glasgow as part of Mike Newman's documentary film 'Imagined Sounds', for the BBC.
'Gala Water was written in 1994 for Robert Irvine. It was commissioned by Galashiels Arts Association and uses a local folk tune, 'Braw, Braw Lads of Gala Water', part of which is heard at the end following a set of variations which embrace a range of emotions.

Marvellous, lyrical, haunting music. One to listen to again and again!

This peace has potential, but it lacks good melody, I want to be able to hum this in my head or out loud, this is the problem with any modern day composers, no melodies we can hum too anymore, just seems very Atonal.

Your are quite right Anton. But all is not lost, please check out American composer Peter Boyer's 1st Symphony. It's amazing. Personally speaking I don't even think this piece has potential. Sally Beamish has potential however, but this is not one of her better works. Instantly forgettable.

I personally like it. It is not so much that composers can not write pieces with catchy melodies. It is just that that can sound very trite very quickly. I feel she does write some really nice melodies here but is also keeping a level of tension. But music is personal which is one of the great things about it.

The composer writes that this piece is an expression of our grief at the loss of a baby through miscarriage. I don’t think there’s a lot of melody in that situation.
