I’ve been fortunate enough to meet several Iranians in my life (I live in USA). All of them have been amazing people (same with all Nigerians I have met). Unfortunately I know a lot of Americans have probably never met an Iranian in person (or at least didn’t know they were Iranian). I worry that given what we see on the news those people will judge all Iranians negatively, hopefully that is not the case. Hopefully the regime falls and both countries can resume friendly relations. I encourage all Americans to watch interviews of the average Iranian and many of them say good things about the USA and how they want to get along with us. In fact, given the videos of Americans themselves chanting ‘death to America’ I wish we could trade those Americans for the Iranians who want to escape the regime…. Seems like a win-win lol

His attacker was a 24 year-old kid living in his mother's basement with no future, no personal identity, no motivation, and no aspirations. His only identity was his religion, and here was Salman Rushdie, an atheist, a brilliant author, highly educated, highly successful, who had everything. What would be the simplest and easiest way to get instant fame and notoriety, and approval from the fanatics in his religion? Killing the man he was jealous of. It was as simple as that. As someone trapped in a dictatorship I can not stress enough how much freedom of thought and expression is valuable and priceless like you would never understand until you lose it. Western people seem not to appreciate how insanely lucky they are to be born in societies where they still have these freedoms. Fight for your freedoms because the rest of the world is fighting for the ideologies / theocracies that ruin their lives and the lives of their children. I wish I was in the west, I wish we had your values.

Some of us do know. I do, and I lament the censorship we also have experienced trying to wake people from their slumber. The topic has become social media Kryptonite. I'm shut down at least 3 times a week for 24 to 48 hours, just for saying words like a nation's name. I never EVER thought this day would come in the West, but here it is. In the last few years, and especially in the last 6 months, censorship is the West is the worst it has ever been. I heard every word you said, loudly, in my heart. I really hope for your dictatorship to fall and fail. And I sincerely hope you once again can be free too. Kindest regards from AU 🫶🇦🇺
@Dystopikachu

Even in the west, it is increasingly becoming harder to speak truth to power. Freedom of speech in general is also becoming conditional upon the feelings of the recipient, because apparently offense is now regarded as something given rather than taken. I suspect this is how it starts, and autocratic rule is how it ends. I wish more people like you were here to warn us of the consequences.

We are not entirely free here in the west, either. With that said, I do not take the degree of freedom we do have, for granted. We have a greater range to speak our minds, but the great American freedom is largely an illusion. We have the appearance of freedom. We are being censored and restricted, at an increasingly alarming pace. Many Americans feel like they are genuinely free, because they have bought into American propaganda, and indoctrination masked as education, so they have no thoughts outside of those approved by the government.

@@sheshahayat5117 no, because he's a good writer. The Satanic Verses aren't "thousands of pages long", and he hasn't dedicated his life to besmirching Islam's name. You strike me as someone who hasn't actually read any of his work and allows others to fill your head with ideas. Every religion out there is subject to ridicule: you'll find stereotypes of every faith in media, Western stand-up comics have been making fun of Christianity for decades, and shows like Family Guy and South Park have prospered while making fun of almost every religion. The difference is, most faiths lack a significant number of insecure fundamentalists that feel as if their Almighty needs to be protected or rescued by mere mortals. As yourself this: If Rushdie's book truly was blasphemous enough to warrant the fatwah, why does Allah SWT still allow him to live? Has the mandate for his assassination come from above, or simply from humans like ourselves?

Clearly you can start by answering your own question and learn about the religious ideology that is so offended by being questioned, that it is often roused to extreme violence to remedy the questioning. If you have no idea about it, how can you possibly stop it ? and worse still, by your ignorance you find that IT finds it's way to your doorstep, and into your life in the most nefarious sense, leaving you completely unable to defend yourself or that you hold dear. That is going to be some peoples experience. I would encourage you to learn, learn as much as you can about it. Because if you knew what I do, you would be a little more focussed on what's coming our way.

When Dan Brown writes a fictional story using debatable references to non canonical gospels, there are critical push back from Christians. However there's an understanding that a violent reaction goes too far because it goes against Jesus' teachings. When Rushdie writes a fictional story using debatable references in the Quran, the threat of violence from a fanatical Islamist is very real. The Charlie Hebdo tragedy was another reminder. Unfortunately, violence is demonstrated by Muhammad in the Quran and various hadiths all too often.

I was introduced to Mr. Rushdie in an English lit. class, we read "Midnight's Children" and I was completely blown away. After that, I had to read "Satanic Verses" and was again blown away. Midway through the book I started over and only allowed myself one chapter a day to prolong the experience. One of my fave quotes, "What happens when you win? When your enemies are at your mercy: how will you act then? Compromise is the temptation of the weak; this is the test for the strong.”
