Thank you for the video. I use a line counter reel for when the fish are suspended. Great Lakes fish generally look up while feeding, so you don't want to be below the level of where the fish are located. I start jigging above the level of the fish and gradually work down until I find them. Which can be above or slightly below the thermocline; usually within about a 10 foot range. Fish will come up to feed, especially when aggressive, so use that first fish as a starting point for the best depth range. Keep an eye on your electronics for bait fish and structure. The Great Lakes are massive, so location is crucial. Especially when jigging, because you are not covering as much water as when trolling with multiple rods at various depths. But, jigging can keep you over fish for much longer once you've found them. Remember to punch in way points when you get hit. A controlled drift between way points is good for those days when wind is a factor. Drift socks help to slow you and I usually go with a heavier jig under these conditions. The same 1 to 2 ounce sizes work under most conditions. Check to make sure your line counter is accurate, especially after a fish. Simply zero out the counter on the surface before your drop.

I never liked my cardiff 400 LH since day one when it bound tight and I lost 80yds braid and a $13 spoon. After several lockups and no help from Shimano I decided to machine and tap the casing to prevent this which has taken care of the issue. Vert jigging is one thing, but if you go into the bays for pike you may eventually experience it. Great video!

Good info, you make jigging in 100+ FOW look like a breeze! I know from trying to jig walleye in 40 foot that it's not the easiest thing to do. Throw in any kind of wind and now the work begins. Nice vid!

Are you running braid straight to your snap hook? I can't tell if you're using a few feet of fluoro/mono for a lead, or just using braid. Jigging for deep lakers is my second favorite type of fishing... after trolling for shallow lakers!

I have a '93 ProV Tournament 1775 with a 70 HP Yamaha tiller. But, I'm a little wary of taking it too far off shore on Superior or Michigan. I'm heading to Milwaukee to fish the harbor in the next week or two. I'm going to have to try vertical jigging spoons, after watching your video. What model and make of camera do you use?

I just can’t understand how people find these places to fish, all my life I try to find places like this to have a good time and get some salmon. I myself can’t just pick up and drive my boat 5 hours away and go on water not knowing what the hell will hit me, or maybe just get skunk with no fish, I’m always trying to learn but idk I guess you have to meet the right person, no one wants to tell you what city or kind were to go fish, Bc everyone thinks the OWN the lake, and they don’t want ppl fishing there sport, they don’t have to say there dam exact sport, but it’s good sports when ppl help, if your a good fisher men then you will always find a good new spot to fish right? obviously I’m not such a great fisher men, but ya it’s kinda messed up, anyways This right here is one of my most favorite videos I watched, I just love the look of it, jigging deep water salmon, no big waves, it’s really a great video.

The reason is you'll tell your buddy he'll tell his buddy and two years later this guy will have a day off and go to fish there and there's ten boats there. Any lake trout lake has jiggable trout. Study the water and lake trout behavior and you'll catch more fish. We have 20+ fish a day on lake Ontario and I wouldn't say a peep. It takes years to learn a body of water so don't be surprised when they don't tell you. Good luck

Hey there! I've done a lot of saltwater fishing and a lot of freshwater bass fishing but never fished for trout. Crazy I know. Anyway I'm going to be going to a lake next week that has landlocked salmon and brook trout in it. The lake is about 50-60 feet deep. Do you think jigging will work on brook trout? I'm sure they'll be deep because the water is warm now.

JB, Another great video. I would like to say it has been awhile since I have seen a video from you, however that would be far from the truth. So we have been in the process of moving to Missouri, and while the movers were at the house packing my son Jackson watched the Steelhead Fiesta video at least 400 times. He will watch the introduction and the part at tippy dam when you say Fiesta and F@@@@%%% within a few moments of each other. I don't know what it is but he is a huge Consumate Sportsman fan. In fact were are in Tennessee staying at my inlaws and doing some fishing. Every time he catches a fish I hear Fiesta from the back of the boat, thanks JB I think you have ruined him. Steve
