I've been re-learning how to cook with my eyes shut (been blind for almost three years). I was raised, and taught to cook, by my Gran. Hands In! Bless you and yours.
I Never thought about not having the gift of sight to aide in cooking. I think the most important things are smell, texture and taste though. Salmon patties are perfect for that. Hell….ya might even be a BETTER cook than before!
my grandmother told me of her great grandmother who couldnt see at all and grew a garden and cooked everything in it . Then when my granny got old she also went blind from macular degeneration and she still cooked very good withought sight.
If you are a Christian you have the authority over sickness . Start laying hands on your eyes and command healing in the name of. Jesus. Find healing verses and recite them daily. Also start taking daily communion. God's word works work it. 🙏
I had a very similar childhood as you. I watched Sanford and Son with my daddy everyday and I still watch it from time to time.I am so happy that I grew up with no cell phones we played outside in the dirt and mud and swam in creeks and rivers no swimming pools. I miss those day's. When I was growing up you had to eat what was cooked for dinner or you went hungry. I love fish cakes we ate them quite often and still do. I love the recipes that you make. A lot of them remind me of times with my family growing up. Things that my Daddy and granny use to cook. God Bless you and your family.
Before my mom passed away, she taped our favorite recipes that she made to the inside of the kitchen cabinet where she kept the glasses. At the bottom of her salmon recipe she wrote... Be sure to use the bones and natural juices of canned salmon for your best health. Mama’s watching you.
I grew up eating these cakes with the bone in and they were my favorite part. I think I'm not going to change now as I'm 75 years old so I'll probably leave the bones in. This is a great recipe. LOL God bless you and Jesus is Lord!!
The only reason I eat salmon patties is to get the health benefits found in the skin and bones (fall apart and mix well in making receipe - with a finicky person married into family if eating with me, I eat my skin and bones mixed in a little bowl as they come separately).
The bones are full of calcium and are good for us. They are so soft they’re unnoticeable in the patties. Otherwise, I use the same recipe, which my mother used.
Right you are Rose, my wife took them out. I always ate to bones and I am 86 so they must not have hurt me. I stop watching the video when I noted 14 minutes long and stopped when the bones are getting removed.
I grew up with that 12 inch black and white tv. Looking back, those were some of the happiest moments watching that tiny tv with my parents. It's those treasured memories that keep us together. What I would give to have my family all together again ❤
I grew up in a financially challenged family but we had salmon patties once a month. To say that we looked forward to that treat would be an understatement! Thanks for this video!
My grandmother made these. 60's..........70's................ So, quite a while back. Your video brought back incredibly VIVID memories of her kitchen, and the smells therein. AND, you have her pepper shaker!!!!!!!!!! That made me flinch! How does something like that trigger a FIFTY YEAR OLD MEMORY!? WOW.
Grew up eating salmon patties (made differently) and they were always served with scrambled eggs, peas and white rice. I have no idea why but it’s delicious in that combo. Maybe it’s a NC thing because I know other people locally that eat it that way too. Thanks for sharing! Always love hearing the history of dishes sprinkled in faith. Keep doing what you’re doing!! ❤️
Every now and then I watch one of your videos, salmon patties bring back memories. Still love them today, mommas going on 92 and cooks every now and then. I think I like hearing your stories more than watching your cooking videos. But if I was the camera person my stomach would be happy.
I'm 56,my dad is from Riceboro, and mom is from winter Haven.I can still remember us at the table just after the sun went down saying grace and digging in them patties with a hot plate of grits sure did hit the spot thanks for the love and memories God bless and your family amen
This is exactly how my mother always made them. I watched some other videos that had a bunch more ingredients. We were poor growing up and this was one of the basics because of the simplicity and cost of it. Glad to see we weren't the only ones who cooked them this way.
My husband used to ask me to take the bones out of the salmon. So, I started smashing them and he eats them. I confessed I left them in but smashed them. Explained the benefits of the bones! He still loves them! Thank you for sharing The Word!! Prayers!
My grandmother and my mother used to make these when I was young. My grandmother was a true southerner. Your videos bring back so many wonderful memories for me. Thank you! 💗
I enjoyed your "Hillbilly Kitchen" cooking. I grew up getting to have salmon, too. We ate plenty of fresh fish because everyone that I know of fished & we kept some in the freezer for the extra cold months in the OHIO River area. Mother made some with onions but I still prefer them without. I Just want to taste that SALMON. Now that I'm in my 60's I still make them with an egg & you're right about the "filler"❗You can use crackers, Planko bread crumbs, flour with some corn meal mixed with it, just about anything for the binder. We usually fry in a light vegetable oil with a little bacon grease❗It really adds the flavor & not need more salt. Things I like to serve as my side dishes can be fried potatoes, my homemade baked beans, hominy, macaroni & cheese that's homemade, corn on the cob, fried or steamed squash & maybe a bowl with sliced cucumbers with onions broken in circles in vinegar & splash of water with a dash of pepper. These are just some suggestions to choose from for YOUR FAMILY. I don't suggest you feed your pup or kitty from the table, but a little salmon for EACH OF THEM helps to keep their intestines clear of bacteria. So share a little bite if you anticipate having more than you'll need. Maybe each a bite b4 you mix it. It's an old Indian trick but it does help❗Thanks to my half Indian Paternal Grandmother, we've learned so much from her for US, OUR PETS & even BABY'S illnesses❤❤❤.
a friend's mom, who i admire looking back for her thrifty ways, used mackerel instead of salmon. when i got older it tried a taste test and could not tell the difference.
This is exactly how my Momma used to make her Salmon Patties. I was not a picky eater, I always looked forward to when she would make them. Thanks for the memories. Stay safe and well. God Bless Y'all.
Hi there! We were raised on this same exact recipe. My grandma on my moms side made them all the time. Only difference I’ve noticed between our recipe and others, is our family left the skin & bones in. They are incredibly soft and offer a lot of nutrition. I ate them as a child and I still eat them as an adult. We love these! Great job! 😊
WoW, I love salmon patties. Oh yes it brings back great memories. My mom made these a lot. Thanks so much for sharing your life with all of us. And all the great recipes from your granny. I never had grandparents. Mine were all gone by the time I was born. I feel like I missed out on a lot by not having grandparents.
I'm like you I'm so happy I grew up like you. I grew up in My. I remember helping mommy string beans and catching craw dads in Granny's creek. We actually had so much fun without all these new fangled things kids have now. Mommy made salmon when we had soup beans and fried potatoes and cornbread.
Of all the food I cooked, my son called when he was in his 30's and wanted to know how I made salmon patties!!! I have always loved salmon patties. Hugs
@@zeenaabdura2971 I'm not laughing at you, but with you-- my ex of 35 years still calls for old recipes I made back in the 70's! Just goes to show--if you are a good cook, they keep coming back, lol!
I am so glad I found your site. I grew up with Sanford, cousins, etc,and no cell phones. Best time of my life. Just listening to you makes me feel like I've known you for years. 😘🌻
Oh my childhood memories indeed!! Haven't had these since I was a kid. One set of grandparents lived with us and the other set only a block away. I too am thankful to have grown up in our time period (born in 1958) before cellphones.
When we were first married+living on a tight budget, salmon patties were a treat as were black eyed pea patties,a very satisfying source of protein+fiber:mash peas, add a little flour, minced onion +Blk+RED pepper(use left over cooked dried peas OR drain canned peas+form patties, dust w/flour+ brown in olive oil..use salt to taste.. Cheap +tasty...Great with tomatoe slices+mayo on toasted bun w/hot sauce or on plate w/other vegetables, fried rice or pan fried corn/try blk beans w/cheddar cheese patties too..
I’m a California girl (61 now) but my mama was from OK. We had salmon patties once a week growing up. Between beans & taters and salmon patties, mama found an affordable way to feed us. Did you ever have fried smelt? We can’t find them anymore. So good! I remember Sanford and Son! Lol
Smelt are so good! They are seasonal, you know. They do a run from the ocean into the fresh-water streams/rivers in early February. We used to net them by the tub-falls out of the Columbia River near Vancouver, WA.
Oh my gosh…. When I was little my gramma made me fried smelt all the time. So yum! I haven’t seen smelt or heard someone mention it for going on 40 years now. I lived in Washington State as a kid. Never seen them in CA since I’ve lived here.
I didn't just learn about my mother's recipes, but my parents had a stronger set of values, and I grew up knowing that Jesus is Lord and I was happy about it. Still am!!!
@Lil' Black Duk Grammar and spelling corrections on your post. ".....our grammar and spelling WERE incorrect" (plus a period goes inside the quotes, not outside). And note that grammar and spelling are not proper nouns, they are common nouns and are not capitalized. The same thing is true of cursive, mother (depending on how it is used), farmer's daughters, and home economics. None of these are proper nouns, although in this day and age it has almost become like the word "ain't." These usages have been misused so much that people just assume they're correct and, therefore, society has accepted the incorrect usage (whether it be capitalization, incorrect grammar, etc.) and it has now become standard usage.
I haven’t tried these yet but they look like the ones I grew up eating. Will definitely be trying this recipe within the next few days. I found this broadcast today and love it better than any other cooking show I’ve watched online. The recipes are great, presentation is awesome and bringing God into the broadcast is outstanding Keep up the great work. The Hillbilly Kitchen definitely deserves 5 stars.
My mother use to make the same Salmon patties and we would eat them with parsley little New Potatoes, sweet pea's and apple sauce....it taste good together!
Didn’t realize how many grew upon salmon patties. We usually had with can sweet potatoes…still do . macaroni N cheese ,green beans. Now on leftover patties,if there are any. Heat and eat with a dollop of mayo. Yummmmy 🧡🧡🧡
Did you ever have creamed peas with diced up new potatoes in them? We always used the tiny little potatoes when we dug up potatoes or Ma wanted some small ones swiped from under the plant while they were growing. Thanks for jogging my memory with the creamed peas.
Exactly how I always had them and make them to this day. Just like the recipe with crushed crackers and topped with a huge dollop of creamed peas. Nothing better in this world; my opinion of course.
@@Alwis-Haph-Rytte yes, we did this too! The new potatoes and new peas were ready by about the 4th of July and that's when mama would cream them together ❤.
I have eat these all my life, but this is the first time I have ever seen anybody make em like I do. I use flour usually but its the same thing. I am from southern West Virginia I am happy to see another Hillbilly doing something good. Great video and I love these things I dip mine in mustard and eat them with fried potatoes. I use my grandmothers recipe she said her mom made them this way too.
As a child, my grandmother would make salmon patties, fried potatoes & onions, and her homemade biscuits for me. It was my favorite meal! And, I still make it for myself. Matter of fact, that will be my supper (in my grandmother's voice) tonight.
This is my granny's recipe too. She was a mountain woman. And I remember growin up on Sanford and Son. Me and my daddy would laugh til we cried 😂 Thank you for bringing back this old recipe. I'm cookin them tonight!
@Lil' Black Duk Yep & a lil mayo too! I started out making these with a lil ketchup in them! I didn’t know any better but thot to myself. 🤔That we ate them dipped in a lil ketchup why not put a hint of it in them! That & I love Ritz crackers in them. Well, everyone loved them so from there on out thats how Ive made them! With the ketchup & a cup of onion & maybe a hint of mayo. Reallllly tasty!!! 😉😋
Grew up in Texas, poor and country, but we survived on salmon patties. Fried bologna, white flour gravy, white bread or cornbread and green beans, corn, potatoes from the community garden. Sometimes a fried chicken, rabbit or squirrel. And eggs of course with sometimes milk from the dairy down the road. We were rich and didn’t know it. Nothing artificial.
@@johnhix484 we grew up country and daddy used to hunt and fish for our protein food. I didn't know until I was a grown-up that we were considered poor, when we were growing-up.
This is unbelievable. I am planning on having salmon patties from Ms. Becky's cookbook. It is open on the kitchen counter to page 35 so I get all the ingredients at the store! Wow.
My Mom didn't use crackers. She uses both cornmeal and flour...and topped them with fresh lemon when they were done. So good. Makes me miss watching her hands make the patties.
Thank you for sharing your recipe and the Fred Sanford story!!! My mother prepared salmon patties with bone and skin. We loved the crunchy bones! She used cornmeal, flour and egg then fried patties in olive oil. We always served patties with steamed cabbage and they are the perfect mate. Glad she taught me how to make them, RIP, I miss her so much.
@@tracydimond3759 Tip for your fried taters, Mix with chopped sweet onions and microwave until almost done, brown in a stainless or cast iron skillet,= done all the way threw with no burning!
My mom made these when I was a kid I like making a sandwich with it and I put mustard on now that was good with beans frid potatoes and cornbread so good
Wow, grew up with this recipe (since late 1950's)!!! Still making to this day. I added a slice of sharp cheddar cheese after their cooked. Thank you for the memories! 🐟🐟🐟🌹👍🙂🦋
@@TheHillbillyKitchen omg thank you for replying. I love you guys your awesome. I lost my Dad in 2015 and my Mom in 2017 and I'm having such a hard time. I feel I'm falling out of Grace with God and your inspirational words help so much. I'm fighting now for my disability and as soon as I get it Lord willing I'm gonna order a cook book. God Bless you and your family. Charlotte is gorgeous. I have 4 beautiful Grands.
I never had these growing up. But now, as a mama who is cooking more and more from our pantry and food preserves I'm looking to these types of recipes. My kiddos loved them! I'm so thankful for your sharing your recipes and time. God is so good!
That’s exactly how I learned to make salmon patties. I once tried air-frying them but my husband said don’t ever do that again. LOLi usually use my cast iron skillet and a little butter. God bless y’all.
Salmon patties are a great frozen pre made entree. I use the Tupperware hamburger maker lined with a square of wax paper ( or for us cheapskates, recycled cereal liners). Put on cookie sheet, freeze for a couple of hours, then put in a freezer bag. Make multiple batches. Great time saver.
Salmon patties! One of my favorites. When I was growing up, my Mom always served them with creamed peas. I still like them that way. I also remember when times were tough, my Mom using Mackrel in place of salmon.
Soooo interesting, my mama always served them with creamed peas, also. I wonder if this was in some cookbook of this era, since so many moms served them together.
Youre such a sweet lady, i dont see you being a brat. 😊 Your voice changes, so did so soft when you speak to us about the Lord. I see your respect you have for him. & Your outreach to others, the same wsy. God bless you. Im sry for your loss also. I hope you have loved ones near. 🙏
@@kyuketsukii You're being silly 😜🤭 Lots of topics are talked about during videos. Phones. Salmon, all sorts of things. Why back when Hershey bars were a nickel & phones were 2 cans, a string and a party line we used to walk 75 miles in 17ft of snow
I remember eating this too! I grew up in Morristown Tennessee until I was 10 years old and then moved to Chattanooga. Thank you for your recipes and memories. May God continue to Bless you!
My mum cooked them with mash potato and shallots, but I will try this one now too. I live in Australia and thought they were a local thing but clearly international. Love your accent too.
Thank you. My mom used to make our family this on Friday nights over 30 years ago and since she passed, I kind of forgot about them. Thanks for reminding me of goodness. And Red Fox. You are a blessed lady. Bye
Thank you you’re one of my very favorites to watch you kind of cheer me up when I’m feeling down once again I’m caregiver to my dad I was caregiver to my mom my husband and now my dad I helped my mom with my grandmother I tell you this is hard I’m 66 now and I just got my dad I love my dad I’m not complaining it’s just hard and I’m exhausted so I turn this song to try to cheer up thank you
Hi Miss Becky!!! Salmon patties are my FAVORITE!!! We had them growing up and i fix them once or twice a month!! Thanks for sharing!!! I am going to fry them in butter next time!!! 😊💕💕💕
I'm new subscriber and an old hillbilly (1945 model who grew up on Sand Mountain in NE Al), and I appreciate being able to learn how to cook the dishes my mother cooked when I was growing up, and that my wife has cooked during our 56 years together. I do most of the cooking now, and it's nice to still be able to eat the good stuff. Thanks for the channel.
Loved your family stories. I was blessed with a large close family too, so many wonderful aunts, uncles and cousins. My mom made the salmon patties like yours minus the green pepper. Yummy! In a pinch, I’ve used tuna and added parsley and fresh lemon juice to the recipe.
Great recipe. Love how you talk about your childhood. I loved Sanford & Son too. (53). I'm so glad they didn't have videos of my childhood antics either! Or my teenage years. I'm so glad God got a hold of me, eventually. 😁
You certainly bring back many pleasant memories of growing up as a kid. I can remember many times my mother making salmon patties, French fries, Cole slaw and hush puppies. Ketchup was my favorite thing to put on them.
Hello Kathy from Ohio! Bones are good for you dear. Thank you for teaching us how to make salmon patties. They look delicious. Yummy! My mom fixed them when I was growing up, but she didn't teach us how to make them. God bless you and your family always. ❤❤✝️✝️✝️
Hello there from Eastern Tennessee! I see that we’re neighbors. 😊 You have a lot of food that I grew up on in Southern Missouri. We were very poor when it came to money but rush when it came to the love in our family and the love of Jesus. I just found you a few days ago and have been binge watching your channel ever since. Thank you for these wonderful recipes and standing up for God especially in this day and age. God bless you. ♥️
One of my absolute favorite things ever! I was raised by my grandparents, and my mawmaw made these every week...we ate them with biscuits and mustard 😋
My mom used to can coho salmon my dad caught and she would make salmon patties with it. She passed away in 2019, and 12 years before that she came down with alzhiemers. Thank you for the recipe!! No one had her recipe!!
My Mom cooked salmon patties a lot when I was growing up in the '60s I really liked them but Dad LOVED them. Now Mom kept the bones and skin in the salmon and they were good the bones were actually tender after cooking. My parents were the finicky eaters I would eat just about anything, still do today. I love trying new and different ethnic foods. I know Mom served them with cornbread but I can't remember what side dish, probably mashed tatters. I put ketchup on my patties too, I suppose it's a rule kids have to eat salmon patties correctly. Thank You again for teaching me how to do this. Love your videos!
Oh the memories you bring back! Salmon patties, field peas or black eyed peas, fried cornbread patties and coleslaw, maybe even fried potatoes. And yes, I loved Sanford and Son, it was always so funny. Thanks for the great memories.
