I find this movie fascinating, when I first watched it I wasn't as much disturbed as confused as I didn't expect a movie to go this far, shows you how far Pasolini can go. When I invited my friends to rewatch it together, they never looked at me the same again lol.
This movie brilliantly depicts how people are held captive in fear by power. Look how many there are, they could easily fight and free themselves but they don't because they are hypnotized by power becoming complete and utter prisoners of fear. Pasolini is reminding us of the effect of fascism by grinding our faces in it, his goal to never allow us to forget.
You guys are so full of shit lmao this story is not even made by Pasolini and has nothing to do with Fascism or any political ideology whatsoever. Stop romanticizing everything. This is just the sadistic fantasy of a very sadistic person. Nothing more and nothing less.
You are looking too deep into it lol this story is not even made by Pasolini and has nothing to do with Fascism or any political ideology whatsoever. Stop romanticizing everything. This is just the sadistic fantasy of a very sadistic person. Nothing more and nothing less.
You guys are so full of sh!t lmao this story is not even made by Pasolini and has nothing to do with Facism or any political ideology whatsoever. Stop romanticizing everything. This story is just the sadistic fantasy of a very sadistic person. Nothing more and nothing less.

This movie was fantastic and so lighthearted and charming as you can tell. Truly a zany and fun movie for the whole family. My grandmother adored it and begged to see it again!
i will never forget when I saw this movie at the theater I worked at, it really didn't seem like special effects at all I still to this day think alot of it was real.
i'm in NH right now and the blue klux klan brutally arrested me and robbed me blind THE DAY AFTER I went public with their Police Chief protecting local mini-Epsteins, in 2020. NO press will report my fake or brutal arrests, or KKKops cutting my wi-fi off many times (subtle, right?), and not even the ACLU or ANYONE will defend me or free speech. I WISH they'd kill me. This world is too evil and no one cares. I'm charged with imaginary crimes like "INSULTS which could cause a fight", in the LAND of the free, in the LIVE FREE or DIE state! The Amerikkkan govt is 99% more evil than ANYONE thinks.
Possible the most complex film of all time, in its acting like in its scenario and its screenplay. A must for any art, film, history or philosophy student...
Pasolini was known for his peculiar manner of choosing subjects for his films,he was not killed because of this film but rather because he became a real bug for the Italian gov.,his views were not popular, although his films fall into the categoty of ART;it could be said he was Walt Disney's antagonist, not many people understood his art let alone enjoy it'he was also an inspiration for many people, besides the fact of being way too liberal and gay...
I love this movie so much. Incredibly meaningful and even though I can't say all of the shock value has aged that well, I still felt disturbed by some of the technical aspects. The cinematography makes the movie feel detached and without humanity, while also making the audience feel like they are part of the atrocities. The same for the musical choices, that range from sympathetic while being played along with images of violence and music that complements the violence. I've been trying to look for the piano piece that's being played before the pianist commits suicide, so if anyone knows its name, I'd be more than thankful.
This is a very dark film with strong artistic merit but I'm not sure if it has high replay value. The ending though really sticks with you and perfectly wraps up the film.
It has been shown uncut in the United States since it's release. Prior to being shown at the NY Film Festival, Salo was seized at US Customs but released. it premiered shortly after the NY Festival at the Festival Theater on 57th St, where I saw it.
For me it was a depicture of the anarchy of power. This is what men are capable of when they are not bound by any kind of moral or social understandings and when they will not be held responsible for their deeds. All their primitive drifts can become reality. In that respect, De Sade's (a notorious misanthrope) philosophy is perfectly propagated throughout the movie. Fascism is basically the form of a political system wherein these kind of torturements can (most easily) become reality.
*Except to tie this film down to solely capitalistic or fascist views is not only unfair, but very illogical. It would be more wise to equate this movie to simply the human desire to consume, destroy, and desecrate without restraints based on its exaggerated lust.*
Please note: without background knowledge this movie is terrible, absurd and horrible - but every single detail has an artistic reference to Pasoloini's social criticism. That's why he was murdered.
Well the good news is this movie was passed again under an R18+ DVD set in Australia just last week. They said that the 176 mins of additional footage provided a context to the film, mitigating it's impact.
Just watching these little clips and having never seen this movie before, I am made nervous by the thought of what there might be in this film. It has to be more intense and gruesome than Cannibal Holocaust.
Erik Bishop in its own way, yes. it is unlike anything else. there is relatively little violence per se until the end, it’s more just really disturbing and at times just nauseating
And to general people who say "you don't like it because you don't undertand, bc it's too high in meaning for you little head..." I say: too much obscurity turns into meaninglessness. it's not that I don't want to understand, I just think that there isn't anything to understand.
Thanks for the good intentions, but wouldn't it have been better to post some more of the film rather than the credits?... Condensed indeed... so condensed that you even missed the Paolo from the name Pier Paolo Pasolini, in both the video's title & the 'info box' !!!
I must have seen it four times between ages 18-24. Took my girlfreind to see it. At first I was onlyy into shick value, like it was a jhn waters, Andy Warhol or grindhose flasher movie. But gradualy the ideas did start to penetrate my mind. I would like to see it again now that I'm older. I also read the Sade book, which was much more grusome, but also poorly written and reletivly shallow philosphicaly (though it tries to be). This is the rare movie that is better than the source material.
So a bunch of my friends and I got drunk after a football game and one of them busted this shit out....wtf. Didn't finish...stopped after maybe the 3rd ass plowing
@pmills89 "The guys dancing at the end of the movie made me sick to my stomach, i don't know why..." One of the most intellignet comments i have heard about this movie, it sounds like you really understand the meaning. The two boys carelessly dancing represents one of the most hopeless, pessimistic endings to a film ever, for we know what these children are destined to become.
It's cannibal holocaust with added pretentiousness, it's not art. It's just shock value cinema, ignorant masses, really? To "experts" in art, you're part of them too! So stop whining and just agree that a message that is half made up by the audience does not make a bad film better.
give a pot so i can join the salo club. dont underesyimate the public. salo is irritating and repulsive and the smell of human suffering is unessary since nobody wants it in fiction or reality. want to go to hell? you might go just because the awfulness of your own mind. good luck sado lovers
@hopeofuniverse11 It's not stupid at all. This film is a metaphor about power and how it can turn people into animals. Maybe you didn't see the whole movie, or the translation in other languages is not so good... or maybe you just can't understand ;)
@94jg The movie was inspired of a book called "The 120 days of Sodom" by Marquis de Sade. Sadomasochism comes from his name. So yeah if you want to see kind of like a script or a literary version, read the book (it's more shocking than the movie)
Well it's based off of a book by the Marquis de Sade and pretty much he was thinking on what cruel things i can do to people while at the same time show how the aristocracy and the church are hypocrites. Pasolini was thinking on how i can use the book as a metaphor for fascism and capitalism.
The torture scenes at the end are just brutal. I understand the art that went into this film and the meaning behind it all. Some of scenes are so difficult to sit through though, plus it is way too long.
yes well. why do we have be upset irritated by salo or other torture so called art its uncomfortabe. ime an artist but i think we dont need this statement. life on the street life itself is enough education torture is a sickness. i dont want to be told its art woven into a story..no matter how well directed.
I'm wondering if any of you have watched the film "Caligula." There is no "acting" in that film when it comes to the sexual acts performed, they are actually doing them in real life. The movie was partly funded by Penthouse, need I say more?
Sorry to ruin it, but the shit was made from the finest swiss chocolate mixed with orange marmalade. (Check out the British Film Institute's excellent book on the film). It wasn't a snuff film. Passolini was murdered by some hustler after the film was made, though it had nothing to do with "Salo." Passolini lived his life on the edge. He also happened to make extraordinary films. This isn't a film for everyone - agreed! It's not even one his best, but it sure inflames people's passions.
@fishman017 I agree with you. I'm sick to death (no pun intended) of people watching things like this, awful things that reach borders than making it ridiculous, and saying there is some deep meaning. There isn't, it's just to market it. You don't need to have children eat feces on a film for it to be satirical. Truly satirical films are far, far cleverer than this.
My brother is actually frightened of this film. No, really. And my brother never is frightened of anything. He told me a few days ago he watched this movie on his room and the TV got struck by lightning. A few years he watched the movie on the TV in our parents bedroom, and nothing happened. Until shortly after he had watched the movie, the TV got struck by lightning. He almost begged me not to watch this movie never ever, nor do any research to it. ...So instinctively, where can I see it?
Saw this the other night, and like others on here I didn't quite get its point. Yes, it's about power, domination and the corruption of humanity, but why prove it with something so extreme? To me, it was more shock value than art, and I wasn't 100% convinced of the director's stated intent of making the film. Seemed more about Pier's state of mind than what he officially said the movie was about
actually bro, just by looking at ur response to the movie id have to disagree with u. alot of ppl would argue that art is anything that makes u feel. and since u obviously feels something about the movie, u verified it. BUT notice, im not saying its a good movie. just that it's art.
@Gmancrap wow do you even know what porno is? Salo is not porno, Pasolini was explaining how perfectly capable individuals are capable of atrocious acts and we see it happen all the time throughout history. The music gives it an almost sardonic look at life and the horror is very deep.
If various state governments in Australia didn't want people to see this movie, they should have just let it go out with an "R" rating. Enough people would have seen it and told their friends NOT to waste their money that it would have sank without trace. Banning it only piqued people's curiosity.
Lol I can't imagine reading the script for this movie..... "okay.... men dressing up like women.... crawling around naked with only a dog collar and a leash.... forced to engage in homosexual activity..... and..... oh I would be in a scene where I have to eat shit..... alright.... hmmm..... I'll do it!"
The only pretension present in the commentary regarding the film Salo, occurs in those who criticize it without knowing what they are talking about. No art form -- that is, any form of representation-- has anything to do with the promotion of cruelty. -- The film is based on Marquis de Sade's 120 Days of Sodom. Sade's philosophy probed the problematic implications of the ideology of democracy (aka liberty and freedom.) The point is to make you think, not to get on a moral high-horse.
Carlon Robbins *Makes you think what? Most people know powerful people do shit behind closed doors, what's new? This movie presents no meaning, purpose or plot because it's shallow depth. Fuck, torture, fuck, torture, fuck, torture.*
@SrtaCruz I wouldnt go that far, but it does piss me off when I say a film is sick (like this), and somehow that makes me...what, close minded? No, it means I have sensativity, and thats not a bad thing.
The Black Mass wedding. This movie is absolutely messed up yes I agree. But this wedding scene is just something else man. Look at the Bishop, that is some satanic bishop stuff. Holy hell
Saw this film at the Valhalla mid nineties. It was pretty awful to watch but banned again? Really? Honestly, I found Hostel way more disturbing. I have to wonder also, if this film is banned then why aren't the works of the Marquis De Sade? Is it just because less people read? Besides, the Director was shot wasn't he? If that's a fair price to pay for making a god awful film then half of Hollywood should be dead.
