SALOMON GENESIS! I will be comparing these shoes heavily to the S/Lab version of these shoes because I feel like that is a logical thing to do. I already did a review on those so if you’re interested, go watch that review after this one.

Thanks for the review, very detailed. Also very helpful to see a review on a trail that I spend time on.

Great feedback! I love my Salomon Genesis and feel that it's one of the best $150 trail shoes. It's durable, well built, comfortable, and a blast to run in!

I'm glad to hear the feeling is mutual! How do you think the protection is on these shoes? Do you agree that it is a lot of protection? Or pretty standard from your experience?

@@JustAnotherRunner I feel like it offers a good balance of protection and ground feedback. The full outsole rubber helps offer protection from sharp rocks but the midsole is soft enough to provide good ground feel and yet has a fun responsiveness to it as well. Like you, I also found that I was less likely to roll my ankle in these shoes. I attribute that to the Active Chassis. Lastly, I really enjoyed the comfort and security of the upper. The tongue was patted just enough and offers a full gusset to keep things in place and I don't feel the laces across the top of my foot unlike the Pulsar Trail Pro 2s.

Great review! Im big fan of salomon shoes, and my current favourite is ultra glide 2, I did Tour du Montblanc in 5 days fast tracking without single blister. Now wanted to try something new, and think about Genesis s/lab or normal version for another 10K vertical adventure this summer. Would be interested what do think how genesis is different to ultra glides 2 in term of fit and performance. Thanks

I absolutely loved the Ultra Glides as well. I had zero issues with them and thought they were some of the best shoes I've ever worn. The Ultra Glides were not flashy or fast or special... they were just work-horses. Reliable. Got the job done. The Genesis shoes offer more protection and have a more agile feel to them. Time will tell if they hold up but they are promising so far!

how is the cushioning/protection over rocky terrain? Not smooth rocks but small sharp ones.
@JustAnotherRunner
@JustAnotherRunner Месяц назад
Incredible. Almost too much protection. You won't feel 90% of the small sharp ones.

did you have any issues with quicklaces? I am experiencing some looseness of quicklaces on the right shoe, after a couple of hours... I'm trying to understand if it's my fault or not
@JustAnotherRunner
@JustAnotherRunner 22 дня назад
I have never experienced any issues with the quicklaces. It could be something you're doing but it's likely something is malfunctioning in the locking mechanism. Try and see if the laces are secure after you tighten them. If you can manually loosen them after you lock them in place then they are probably broken. You can buy replacements on their website under accessories "spare parts".

Would you prefer this to the Thundercross? I would prefer the 4mm drop, but it sounds like this has more energy return.?
@JustAnotherRunner
@JustAnotherRunner 9 дней назад
If you're going for shorter distances and don't need protection, I'd go for the thundercross. It's a fun shoe! But the midsole/outsole is less protective. If you need/want protection and/or you are going longer than 15-20 miles then I'd go with the Genesis. Both are solid choices for different reasons!

Would you pick the Genesis, S/Lab Genesis, Thundercross or something else to use for 50K and 100K ultras?
@JustAnotherRunner
@JustAnotherRunner Месяц назад
Not the thundercross. They don’t have the amount of cushion I would want for anything more than 15ish miles. I’d trust either of the Genesis or the Salomon SLAB Ultra 3’s.

@@JustAnotherRunner hm 🤔 Would you say S/LAB Genesis is a bit more cushioned Ultra³? Other difference? I still have the U3 but I like it only up to 30-40km. My heels don't want more!
@JustAnotherRunner
@JustAnotherRunner 11 дней назад
@@yalokim5264 yes. More cushion.

I've trail run in Solomons for more than a decade. I have struggled a bit with the narrow nature of the brand but have found the Mission and XA series worked reasonably well for me. In ultras, I would switch out at mile 30-50 to a wider toe box shoe for the later miles (Topos or Altra) but still preferred the better trail feel of the Solomons for training. I have purchased at least 25 pairs of Solomon over that time. I recently purchased the Genesis, mainly because I hope the Matrix fabric will last longer than whatever mesh is used in the Mission/XA shoes. While I love the feel of those shoes, upper fabric durability has always been a weakness (just as you mentioned). I have 3 trail runs currently on the Genesis with about 65 miles total. I run in the eastern Sierra and these miles are hard and rocky. Two gripes so far: 1: The heel pocket isn't real secure for me. If I use my usual inserts (Superfeet) in the Genesis, the heel pocket fails dramatically to hold and I get a lot of heel slip while climbing. My only current fix is to run with the near useless standard Solomon insert with comes with the shoe. 2: The ankle carve outs on the outside of the shoe are not quite deep enough for my ankle bones and while descending they sides dig into the bottom of my ankle bone. Painful after about 20 miles or so - a pain which can remain for several days. The stiff side inserts actually exacerbate the problem (though I love the stable feel provided by the "chassis" inserts). I like the shoe enough that I'm going to try to heat gun those side inserts, soften them a bit and fold them down slightly. Never had this problem before with Solomon. I really want to like these shoes, but we'll see if I can get past these two issues.

So sorry to hear you're having these issues. I vaguely remember on the first run feeling as tho my ankle was a bit loose but all I had to do was adjust the lacing a bit. Since then I have had no problems. So I don't think I will be much help. I hope your heat gun solution fixes your problem! Good luck!
