This is a gear review of my Salomon Quest 4D GTX3 hiking boots. I have owned several pairs of these boots and find them very comfortable, light and fairly durable. I am very happy with these boots.
Find these boots in either of my Amazon stores.

I’m in my second year of rocking these and I think they’re fantastic. A little rough out of the box but not much required to break them in. I live in Canada and i put them through the ringer this winter just to see what they can do. Pretty warm (as long as you keep moving) and pretty waterproof. I got them for humping heavy loads on long trails and they’re worth every penny. Grip well on ice and we have lots of that here.

The most comfortable boot I have ever owned. My waterproof membrane only lasted 2 years and after 3 years the sole separated from the boot. But I will purchase again.

If an old boot starts to leek because of damage around the area the sole connects to the leather. Apply some clear silicone from home depot and it will fix the leaking. Simple, cheap, effective

What a great review! How did you find the sizing works? I'm in a UK size 11 and some makes like merrell,I need a size 12.I've decided that these are the boots for me and would prefer to buy online.
@KevinOutdoors
@KevinOutdoors 5 лет назад
Hi Ken, I find the size is fairly true to my actual size. I have the same experience with other brands that you do. I am a US9 but I often need a US10 or US10.5 depending on the brand - yes Merrell is one of them, Columbia seems to be going that way too. These boots fit well at US9 for me and they have been consistent with all the pairs I own. You could always try on a pair at a store even if you want to order online. Good luck!

Do you usually buy one size bigger to accommodate the thicker socks or sometimes multiple socks and the fact that feet swell a bit on long treks? Appreciate your feedback.
@KevinOutdoors
@KevinOutdoors 4 года назад
Good question Ganesh. I know that some people do that. I used to wear multiple pairs of socks hiking now I am back down to one. Sometimes I wear a very very thin liner pair. So no I don't buy a larger size. I just look for a good all around fit.

Good review KO! I will be looking at a try-on of those to see if they fit. My Zamberlans are great for comfort and support, except the soles are way too slippery on wet rocks. I am hoping the Salomons are a better grip on the wet rocks.
@KevinOutdoors
@KevinOutdoors 4 года назад
I have Zamberlans as you know and I would suggest the Salomon's are probably better on wet rocks but still probably not as good as what I think you are hoping for. I don't think anyone makes a truly soft sole hiking boot anymore that is ideal for wet rocks.

Hi Kelvin, You know that you might be outside the limited warranty offered by Salomon, however Gore-Tex themselves offer a lifetime warranty on the membrane. I would send the 2013 pair back to Gore-Tex and then you will have a new pair for if it happens again. All the best champ 👊

Great review, Kevin. Solomon boots are always my choice, too! Did you ever use some insoles for your hiking boots? I started using recently Solestar Hiking insoles (some German brand) and they are completley new thing: stiff insoles that give fantastic stability. They are not like other soft cheap insoles. What is your experience with insoles?
@KevinOutdoors
@KevinOutdoors 6 лет назад
Hi Jelena, Before I could afford good boots, I used to use gel insoles but once I went to these boots it wasn't necessary. I just use the insoles that come with the boot. I will look for Solestar though. Sounds interesting.

Nice, I was torn between these and the Ultra X 3s - the Ultras are way lighter but after a few hikes in the wet where my feet just got SOAKED in my Merrell MOAB GTXs (which were great when I got them but after a couple of years leak like a seive) I'm prioritising waterproofing. Seeing pairs of these hold up after years when totally submerged makes me think I'll get the 4Ds. Just hope they're wide enough for my feet! Also saw some Ultras in a local shop and the outer part looked kinda flimsy and plastic in parts - I've seen people who've used them for a while and they held up, but these things look way more robust.
@KevinOutdoors
@KevinOutdoors 4 года назад
All I can say is that I have been happy. There are a few commenters who have reported negative experiences. It makes me wonder if they have multiple manufacturing locations or if counterfeit boots are in the market. But most comments are very positive. Good Luck!
@sonicwingnut
@sonicwingnut 4 года назад
@@KevinOutdoors apparently some are made in Vietnam and others in India, and one of them is supposedly better quality (can't remember which). I ended up ordering the X Ultra 3 mid top anyway because they had a wide fit option and I have hobbit feet, but I did realise my local sports direct had the ultras and quest prime (slightly cheaper 4Ds) in, so I swung by on my way home to test em - they only had size 9 but the Quest was a bit wider than their non-wide ultras which were tight as hell.. glad I ordered the wide fit in 9.5! Since the Quests seemed wider in general if I don't like the Ultras I'm 100% exchanging them for Quest 4Ds.

Dave Page, Cobbler will resole your boots for $100. I've had two of my 'retired' boots resoled, and he does a great job. One pair was an Asolo mid that is no longer offered, and the other a pair of Salomon Quest boots, the originals. I just thought I'd throw that out there in case you were interested in saving a little coin and 'reviving' those older boots.

@KevinOutdoors

Hi Sebastian, these are warmer than most hiking boots but I would not recommend them for winter camping. They are not insulated in any intended way.
@4RunnerLC
@4RunnerLC 5 лет назад
Hi Sebastian, I'll have to go with Kevin on this one. Just did Canaan Backcountry W.Va in December and after about two hours hiking, my feet were cold. Not toecicles, but cold. The temperature was around 15 f. The snow on the trail averaged about 4 inches and I was wearing sock liners, wool socks, gaiters, snow pants and an oversized snow bib. It's hard to find a comfortable hiking boot(and these are extremely comfortable) that will keep your feet warm in anything 15f or colder. I tend to think that if you buy a larger size, one that will accomodate two pairs of wool socks, then I think these could be your boots as long as it doesn't get below 10f. Factors also play in, like are you going to be active while wearing these, or, are you going to be sitting around the campfire at night in 10f. I'm willing to bet on my Solomom boots that the next time I'm in the mountains that I will purchase an insole, wear the same sock line-up and, put some toe warmers in. I believe that i can get about 5hrs of hiking in with 5f.

I bought a pair of these and the leather near the toebox started to split open on my first hike. Salomon refused to warranty them saying it was from misuse. So keep that in mind when spending this kind of money on a pair of boots. Salomon considers walking with their boots on misuse.

How are they for breathability and summer? I'm trying to find a replacement boot for the Columbia's I got that are absolutely terrible for breathability. These have great reviews but no mention to breathability and some say its not good in the hotter months?
@KevinOutdoors
@KevinOutdoors 6 лет назад
Thanks for the question Joe. These boots can be a bit warm in summer months. I tend to hike in the shoulder season when bug are low. I hike in the boreal and in mountain areas so for my purposes they are OK. I have seen comments about these boots being too hot for warmer times of the year or desert areas. If I was worried about being too hot I would try and find a pair of boots without goretex. It isn't as breathable as people think it is. Good luck and thanks for the view.
@JoeC92
@JoeC92 6 лет назад
I'm in Ontario, and most of the stuff I do is in central ontario. so maybe thats the case? the reviews I'm reading about the heat are from desert and rather hot climates. I wear work boots all day long in construction so I am used to some heat, just not sure as some of the reviews make it sound like this is borderline a winter boot. I'm not overly concerned with the heat as I am with just not having my feet breathe. The columbias I have will leave your feet soaked in sweat whether its 4 degrees out or 34 degrees out. they just do not breathe at all.
@KevinOutdoors
@KevinOutdoors 6 лет назад
Of course it is a personal choice but I would say you will be fine with these. Very comfortable, excellent support, reasonably durable and waterproof.
@JoeC92
@JoeC92 6 лет назад
I'll have to go try them on too, just trying to do as much research as possible. The columbia ones I mentioned I got because they were on sale at mec, didn't do any research just got them cause why not they were on sale for under $140 and I needed some new boots. But after spring/summer with them they suck. Rather invest in something good that I don't need to worry about or have my tent reek when I take off my boots because they make my feet sweat like a swamp from having no breathability. The other boot I was thinking of was one from Vasque but all the reviews I'm finding on them list one major flaw, the eyelets rip off easy. They have great reviews otherwise but that one durability issue makes me not want to risk it. Thanks for the review and insight, really helping narrow my choices.

Hi Pankaj, All I can tell you is that I get about two years out of my boots. The sole does break up after a period of time and depending on how rough the trail is. @KevinOutdoors 6 лет назад
Hi Phoria, I am no expert but it sounds like you have issues with your feet and it may or may not be the boots fault. 3 miles shouldn't start hurting the bottom of your feet unless the boots are really really bad. I once had this problem with an old pair of boots and I got gel insoles. But I would recommend getting your feet checked out. My chiropractor has really helped me get in alignment and walk (more) properly. Obviously I can't offer you direct advice I can only let you know what works for me you have to do what works for you. what is the life of the shoe in normal use in the city?
@KevinOutdoors
@KevinOutdoors 5 лет назад
Good question Robert, it is really tough to say as I suppose it depends on how much walking you do. As most of the damage on my older boots were from cuts and scrapes around the edges probably mostly from sharp rocks. And since there are fewer sharp rocks in the city I would say they should last 3 or more years. Just a guess. The sole is fairly durable. It will also depend on how heavy you are. I am +200lb and shoes that I wear every day last about 8 months. My 110lb wife has cheap shoes that have lasted 3+ years.

Useless waterproof test. What about when it's raining and the water is coming from above?
@KevinOutdoors
@KevinOutdoors 5 лет назад
I explain this in my 'Camping in the Rain' video. I do get wet feet if I am wearing shorts and water runs down my leg into the boots. Rain pants or gaiters are needed to keep dry feet when hiking in the rain.
@airwolfnh
@airwolfnh 5 лет назад
@@KevinOutdoors You don't need that to do your test, you can submerge them under the water 100% up until the point where the water would get in from the main hole. You just left the bottom under the water where the rubber is.... that's pointless test to do unless they have a big hole on them like one of yours do. You are not testing the fabric that goes on top of the boot that in theory prevents water coming in like rain for instance.
@KevinOutdoors
@KevinOutdoors 5 лет назад
I don't think you could see the test properly. Perhaps I should have shot from above. The tops of the boot were submerged. Not all the way up to the opening but to about an inch from that. I didn't want to splash water and ruin the test. The toes of the boots were completely submerged.

@KevinOutdoors

@@andrewlinesjah4538 I'd consider it a backpacking boot. I am not that familiar with the brand but they have an excellent reputation. All leather is very nice but heavy and pricy. I went down that path for awhile and own a pair of leather and pricy Zamberlans that I never wear because of the weight. The trend in backpacking it to move towards lighter footwear. That model of Scarpa weights 1.7 kg while the Salomon Quest weighs 1.28kg. Here in Canada that model of Scarpa will cost about $420 and the Salomon will cost about $280.

@@KevinOutdoors if its a diffent cut in Europe is actually an interesting question. I've used Salomons for many years, because they are tuff and a good quality. @@KevinOutdoors I just bought a pair (US) and had to return them because they weren't wide enough. However, its just the arch that's too narrow. The toe box is way wider than most boots I've tried and heel is nice and snug. That said, I wouldn't call it more narrow than other standard sized boots. Ultimately it's not wide enough for my wide, somewhat flat feet because it's not a wide sized boot. Weirdly, the typical recommendation of sizing up made things way worse as the heel step was under my arch.
