Garretts' moment shows exactly what I get. I've watched you guys first build, then learn and now grow into pure moment gatherers. It's my life story that makes it different from the next guys even though we see the same thing. Garretts moment reminded me of sitting in a hospital bed two seconds after saying, "I just had a heart attack". The next word I said isn' t for this comment. But rhymes with duck. The whole of the moment hit and I felt that hit looking at Garrett, looking to the sunset. Beautiful moments can be found in strange places.

Ruth when I was lucky enough to get to hang out with Charlene Swansee Whisnet famous southern poet in the middle 70s when I was in Highschool she said only once "Just don't write anything you couldn't say to someone at a party" it changed my youthful writing style forever and clearly I've never forgotten it. What she meant wasn't about content but style. Authenticity.

Glad to see there was little damage, just a thought but I bet Red Aviva would look mighty fine with a copper strip run along her bow there covering up the end of those planks which would give her a bit more abrasion protection.

Guys, skip Central America. Go direct to Panama if you want to go into the Caribbean, or head west to the Marquesas. There are very limited options in Guatemala and El Salvador and Nicaragua has safety issues. The South Pacific is beautiful, cleaner and less full of poverty problems. I went through Central America 20 years ago and I have friends who just came through this past winter. It hasn’t improved! Go West!

That's crazy. So what did they do in the older times when they couldn't haul out like that? As a non sailor, I find the SUPER interesting
@robm.4512
@robm.4512 3 месяца назад
They’d “careen” the boat; At a high tide, usually a few days days before the highest spring tide of the cycle, they’d put her gently onto a shoreline with the right slope angle down to the water’s edge, with the bow facing the shore. As the tide fell, leaving the vessel high and dry, they’d lash or pin props to her sides to prevent her falling onto her side. Then they’d work like demons to do what had to be done between each high tide. Alternatively, if there was a suitable stone quay handy, they’d do the same but run a halyard from high up the mast to the quay to make sure that the vessel grounded with a slight lean onto the stonework to keep her upright. There were actually drydocks from the mid to late 1700’s but generally only at a few naval yards. I’m not aware of any much before then but it’s not impossible, the old boys were smart and resourceful. Cheers, R. 😎👍🍻

Cool- I've been dying to see how well the sheathing performed. I am going to be replacing about 30 feet of teredo-damaged cedar on my boat this summer, and this has got me thinking. Fun fact: the anus of the teredo is just behind the head, and they leave a trail of poop behind them in their burrow. 😮
