I’m reviewing and installing the SmarterSpa salt water hot tub Chlorinator to replace my previous Chlor Maker. This Chlorinator automatically detects the chlorine levels of the water and turns on when needed.
You can buy these Chlorinators from

Just bought it last year 2023. After receiving help balancing the water from a local pool store, we have had crystal-clear water for over 10 months. We did not need to change the water over the winter.

glad to hear you are having a great experience with it so far. The seal on my cell was defective but the manufacturer replaced it completely. It works great know and I seldom have to add any additional chemicals to my tub to balance it. Thanks for commenting!

Thanks for the video! No one else has reviewed these, and seems like a cheaper and easier alternative than most other salt systems!

The voltage isn’t what you want to consider when thinking about electrocution, it’s the current you want to consider. Always remove before entering spa

I always take out mine when I get into the tub. Feel safer that way...just don't forget to put it back in.

I’ve had mine for 2 seasons already and it’s still functioning. I did close my tub over the winter so that might have prolong the life of the rod. I will let you know after this season.

Hi! I was just wondering if there are any long term negative effects to switching to saltwater? I am currently using bromine and I’m interested in making the switch to saltwater on my next fill.
@DDIY-Guy

I’ve been using it for a few years now and love it! Only negative thing I would say is I had issues with the drop in rod in the first version I got…it was a defective seal in the titanium plates and sensor. Fortunately the supplier I got it from replaced it right away…in fact they allowed me to upgrade to the newer version. Now It’s been 2 years now and I’m still really happy with it.

@@DDIY-Guy thanks for the response!! I assume you will still need to test the water each week? I have ph and alka up/down products I used when I had bromine. Would I be able to use those same products for this? Thanks!
@DDIY-Guy

Yes, you will be able to test your water PH and alkalinity levels with those testers.

hey great video. since youre from canada, what is your experience using the smarterspa over winter? gets to -30C here -- does the unit still work ok?
@DDIY-Guy
@DDIY-Guy 2 года назад
The unit works great for me over the winter since I don’t have to monitor the chlorine levels.

one more question: I'm a new user just installed but having some trouble. Water is balanced, salt is around 1400ppm. Chorine tests are showing almost zero Free Chlorine. When i put the cell body into hot tub and turn on the unit, there the smarterspa just sits in standby and whiteLED blinks every 10sec... . I tried pressing boost and it does start to bubble up and make chlorine. I see chlorine levels com up eventually --- however this smarterspa does NOT automatically turn on at all. I raised the ZEROPOINT to max 60 and it still doesnt trigger. At this point its a manual machine that only works when i press boost button. Any tips? is my controller broken?
@DDIY-Guy
@DDIY-Guy 2 года назад
You might be right, the controller might be defective or the drop rode sensors also could be faulty. Have you tried getting a bucket of water and then adding the necessary amount of salt in then us that as to test the generator? First only add a bit of salt then slowly add more salt in the bucket until the low salt signal turns off.

I set the levels according to the size of my tub, I put the correct amount of salt yet I still get the low salt indicator light. Any pointers?
@DDIY-Guy
@DDIY-Guy 2 года назад
Don’t put any more salt…there might be something wrong with your sensor. Check the drop rod and look at the 2 wires sensor beside the titanium plates. If there is rust there, the sensors might not work properly. Contact your supplier and let them know about it. Take a picture to show them. They might send you a new replacement rod. Another possibility might be that the salt has not dissolve completely in the water. Other option might be you need to add one cup at a time

My solution was to contact the supplier regarding the issue. I shipped the Chlormaker for repair and it was returned within a few weeks and began working as shown in your videos! A few months later though, another issue arose but this time w/ the power supply(Salt level panel). Repeated the process of return for a power supply replacement and received it back in two weeks. No further issues as of now.

just plugged mine in i have no salt indicator light lit? once i hit boost it is flashing ok? should the light have been solid?
@DDIY-Guy
@DDIY-Guy 3 года назад
Yes why do you hate boost the blue light should stay on with “salt OK”, that means it is generating the chlorine.
@DDIY-Guy
@DDIY-Guy 3 года назад
After testing it with Boost, the generator will automatically monitor the chlorine level and will turn on when it is needed. check the chlorine levels after a day and if it is too high or too low you can adjust the settings by pressing on the two arrows up and down at the same time then press the up and down arrow once to increase or decrease the levels.
