I always enjoy the fishing shows on TV. Glad to find yours here. I found your channel in the BlackBox community and I subscribed to your channel.. Keep it up! Looking forward to your future videos.
Hi Johan, good days fishing, in fact a very good! I taught my son fly casting off Shelly Beach fishing into the creek coming out of Whitford. In the 70’s we hooked into lots of Kaiwai but let them all go as nobody ate those fish, we just used them for bait. The place was free of people, so ideal for bad casting as there were no critics! How times change, anyway, thanks again for a beaut video. Harera
Thanks Piere, much appreciated. That creek from Whitford looks great. I have only been down that area once from the shore and once from a boat. Wasn't really fishing but looked nice. Will have to go check it out again some time.
It is indeed, especially in the shallows. Not much different from softbaiting in the deep water. That big one was good fun on the fly gear. Kahawai and kings pull serious string so are always fun. Pitty I didn't get a hookup on the kings. Had a couple of follows on the popper.
Had no idea that for snapper you dont do anything. A little bit of bait style fishing integrated in fly fishing. Fly fishing just doesnt get any better
Yep, just do nothing and wait for the strike as it sinks. Just keep contact with your line if you are targeting the shallows. If you haven't seen this vid yet ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YJLpt3lfgMg.html there is some more info on shallow water snaps in there. Tight lines.
Thanks man, funnily sharks are a target on fly and plenty have been caught here in NZ. Small Makos being the most popular I believe. I just don't have the gear for even a small Mako. You need a 12-14wt rod and some serious lines and a solid reel.
hi guys great footage and info... so im living on kawau island and iv been stricty softbaiting for years.. dropped main line weight to 4kg long rod and catch plenty and loose even more due to shallow water and big fish.. im not fussed at losing a 10ib snap in the fowl.. im really just out for a feed.. i work on the water as a skipper so get 50 hours a week on the gulf year round... so the question im asking before i go spnd more money on gear.. i fish from a runabout.. 6m cabin.. not much bow room.. can i realistically cast and strip on a runabout.. and when on my own.. can i steer.. i like fishing shallows and sight fish.. not to interested in casting out in the open.. with birds etc.. i can do that while working... dosnt interest me with a fly rod in the open... i like the stelth and hunt.. how specialized is your boat..
Hi Mike, sorry for the delay in reply but I wanted to try and find a bit of time to respond appropriately but with kids screaming in the background I'm not sure I'm going to get a chance😂I will try. Yes, it is doable from a runabout with a cabin but it can be a bit restrictive. Depending on which hand you cast with you need a fair bit of clearance. I am right-handed so I would need to position the boat so I can fish from the starboard corner of the stern. That will give me the clearance I need for casting. If I wanted to fish a piece of coastline I would have to pick it well so the wind lines up with the coastline and have the sea anchor somewhere off the stern so the bow points slightly into shore while drifting. I would still be close enough to be able to steer between casts if the drift goes astray. Obviously, a good Minn Kota with spot lock that can hold the boat in position makes things a lot more practical and is something I would love for my boat. It's not particularly specialized. It's just a center console smart wave 3500 with a DIY casting deck in the front which is removable when I'm drifting the shoreline for snapper in the shallows I operate it much as I described above. Have a look, there are a couple of good vids on my channel about targeting snapper on a shallow reef, one has a good aerial photo as the thumbnail. You will see what I do there. A Minn Kota and center console with a casting deck is ideal for fly fishing as you can easily move around the shallows the opened deck just allows more room for casting. Hope that helps and happy to tag along with you on a trip one day and bring my rods so you can try it out first before spending. I'm sure I'll learn heaps from you in a day on the water by the sound of it. Join the Saltfly Tauranga group on Facebook if you want to see some interesting stuff the guys there get up to an lots of good info and heaps of people willing to share information. Hope that all helps Cheers, Johan
