This project is more of an experiment in Galvanic cells and trying to run an RC boat off of sea water! It does work but really sucks for anything more than the simple toy you see here! (note the solar cell is only driving the RC control and servo) it does not influence the motor of the boat! the seawater battery is not stable enough to run your typical rc receiver so I did not use it. Its only job is to power the ship!

As a very old engineer nearing 85 years old, I am amazed at what one can do with the sophisticated blocks that are available these days for one to tinker with. In my days it was not like that and we had to build the engineering block ourselves in the case of radio, I had to design and build the Tx and Rx down to transistor-level including winding our own motors and even making our own batteries. Engineering which I followed was not only tinkering with assembling and operating ready-made units, but one had to learn about the characteristics of different materials, do a lot of calculations hence one needed a good background in mathematics and we who took up electronics we had to learn and test all there was to learn in analog and digital and switched electronics to achieve all the functions including memories and processes in microprocessors. At 6:08 this young man said, " I went to school for a course in aviation, but really did not quite finish that, for I really wanted to switch majors......so I did try an engineering degree, I did not fare so well in the super formal engineering settings so I left believing in more self-education from various sources such as RU-vid, because I wanted to understand problem-solving through tinkering rather than listening to lectures ...... It does not matter how you learn as long as you have a good idea of what is going on." The problem with many people these days is that they love to be the proud owners of what they buy as long as one can afford it to live with that mentality, but there is much deeper knowledge than one can ache3ve by just tinkering with assembling units bought off the shelf. Going back to 1950 we used valves to make out Rx and Tx and by 1960 we were beginning to change over to transistors. After learning all about transistor circuits I decided to build my own eight-channel pulse with modulated Tx and the complementary receiver with proportional control. By then my mathematics was up to the level of understanding Maxwell's equations and solving to be able to design antennas and waveguides and their detailed performance. including gun diodes at their earlier stage. * The modulation stage of my transmitter was a set of eight variable pulsed followed by a synchronizing pulse fed to control the 35 Megahertz power oscillator radiating about half a watt. All that had to be tuned to a center-tapped antenna matched accordingly. * The receiver was a superheterodyne unit that i had to design from scratch where with the local oscillator the intermediate frequency was handled by a tuned amplifier and after demodulating the pulse train one needed to pick up the synchronizing pulse and with it set a counter to zero. Then the following pulses would step up the ripple counter where the output pulse on each " channel output" would remain for the duration of the pulse which was a duration of 0.5 to 1.5 milliseconds. The frame rate I used was about 30 frames per second. Our enjoyment was not in just assembling complex units and operating them, but designing and making and tuning an eight-channel proportional control Tx and Rx must have taken me about three months at least. When I finished that I remember building a submarine made out of oil gallon tin containers and that also required calculations rather than trial and error or tinkering with off-the-shelf units. We lived through WW2 and my three brothers and I did fill in our time with formal engineering education at a university and the mathematical engineering contents were high which enabled us to handle very complex state control systems and their stability. At the university, we were the first to design and deposit resistances and capacitors on glass substrates leading the way in microelectronics. To be honest my heart sinks when the people seen in this video use Tx Rx and servos and such sophisticated electronics on disposal throw way units. If only rather than tinkering with them they would appreciate the level of intelligence that goes on to understand the intelligent circuits that are enclosed within them. Even designing and building a bootstrap circuit used to make us very happy and as we could not afford to do what young people do in this video we used to dismantle one circuit and use the capacitors and transistors and resistors in another circuits, we did not mind the inductors as we designed and wounded them according to (N^2)/S, One of the most difficult circuits we designed at around 1955, was the counter circuit which detected the synch pulse and then counted the number of pulses to decode each channel. These electronic circuits we later used to design the arithmetic logic units in microprocessors. Those young people who wish to take up engineering must be able to persevere beyond tinkering with off the self bought units and they need to be patient to build up a solid background in mathematics and now computer programming using engineering-oriented software. One cannot learn the highest grade of engineering by tinkering with the available devices as that is more of a technician level and not an engineering level. Any engineering direction needs a high amount of mathematical knowledge to be able to appreciate the many higher aspects that tinkering and assembling units bought off the shelf gives the operator a good thrill but that is not what one calls engineering. Engineering does not need the sensationalism that normally accompanies videos on RU-vid. Here is one aspect of the mathematical contents in engineering. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-r6sGWTCMz2k.html. Laplace functions and Maxell's equations and Navier Stoke equations are also beautiful mathematical tinkering that needs perseverance and a higher effort to follow........ ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--LsXjVfucHU.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-g-5bi7dxHP4.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Gq-sUhP3kDI.html

@xenoshade8997
@xenoshade8997 6 лет назад
In theory he should have just used plates, gives the maximum surface area to volume ratio and much cheaper. This is the reason why people use plates for electrolysis

@inferno7181 6 лет назад
XenoShade8 should have used carbon and magnesium powder in bags. Stupid amounts of surface area
@xenoshade8997
@xenoshade8997 6 лет назад
hahaha! great idea in theory but the idea of this is to make a battery using an electrolyte and two materials being an anode and cathode. This idea stems from the absorption and releasing of electrons. Haven't had a chem class in about 2 years but the idea is the anode (positively charged material) releases electrons and creates anions from the electrolyte and the cathode gains those electrons that the anode lost and becomes the cation. The problem with this in real world is that if you use a powder, there wont be proper conduction between the particles of the graphite and magnesium thus making the powder basically useless. That is why plates are preferred, and actually, not just plates, but commercial units use very scorn or scratched plates since it increases surface area.
@menrodbaquiran2467
@menrodbaquiran2467 6 лет назад
XenoShade8 the ions and the electrons that you are speaking of is already in the satl water. What a battery does is move those ions from the negative terminal to the positive terminal. The cathodes and anodes doesn't produce electrons.

hey peter, I am A Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering student.Your video made me feel bit satisfied of the concepts since i've been thinking of this concept a long long time ago before i saw this video rn... Due to this, I can say that this concept really works and I am planning to improve the Efficiency of this Concept...Hoping for your Collaborations someday whenever there is a specific questions I needed how you work on this prototype.

@kommenttimyrsky451
@kommenttimyrsky451 6 лет назад
Ok I re-watched the flite test helicarrier video, and all the landings were really scetchy. They stopped the plane by crashing into the conning tower and deck, you could say that it was not a proper landing, but both carrier and plane remained intact so its close enough

10:00 wait im confused, is it real or just a joke?
@mrharvest
@mrharvest 6 лет назад
Yeah, it's real. But the salt water is not powering the boat. Instead the power is generated as ions are released from the anode into the liquid. As the ions are positively charged, the anode will be left with a negative charge (surplus of electrons), which then travel across the wire to the cathode. This flow of electrons is current. The salt water is just the medium for the travel of the ions and the power is generated as the ions are released from the anode which will slowly be consumed.

There has been a wave powered boat I saw in action that would go forever. Even in almost stagnant water it still moved fairly good. In regular sized waves, if moved really good with the waves and even better against the waves. It worked great on a rowboat. It would be a very big apparatus for a large ship. It looked rather like a combination hydrofoil and wing that was mounted under the ship.
