Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs & The Foggy Mountain Boys perform two bluegrass classics, with Earl Scruggs doing a breakdown in between. Introduced by Cisco Houston.
This clip is part of a 1 hour CBS special that aired only once called 'Folk Sound USA' around 1960, featuring performances from Cisco Houston, Joan Baez, John Jacob Niles, John Lee Hooker and many more American Folk artists. The whole show can be found on my channel

my Dad was raised in Statesville NC...my grandparents were share croppers back then...he used to tell me he grew up around Earl Scruggs...said they used to go fishing together as boys...I found an old black and white picture of Flatt and Scruggs...had it framed and gave it to him and he cried over it for a while...he told me Earl used to carry an old banjo with him everywhere...

I wish I could have grown up during that time. I know an older guy who used to go to Earls shows with his father when he was a boy. I just wish I could have heard Earl play in person just one time…

Boys and girls, in my opinion it just doesn't get much better than this. Each one of them masters of their instrument. The absolute finest to my ears.

This is a treasure. It’s interesting to see how they are accustomed to sharing a single microphone, constantly rearranging themselves on the stage without missing a beat.

There was the banjo before Earl and the banjo after Earl. The man truly revolutionized it. They played with Bill Monroe, they were there at the beginning of the bluegrass sound.

These guys are to this genre as Chet Atkins, Merle Travis, and Jerry Reed were to finger style guitar - legendary and set the standard for the future. Timeless. Still sounds terrific.

The "breakdown" between the two vocal numbers is called Earl's Breakdown. It introduced the "retuning" on the fly. The banjo he is playing was modified to have the tuners added to the headstock. Today you simply buy a tuning peg that has been designed to allow you to twist the pegs a specified distance. That way you don't have to drill more holes in your headstock for the shims he uses to retune the strings.
@darrellclements4446

Called Scruggs tuners. I think Earl patented them.
@darrellclements4446
@darrellclements4446 Год назад
When he first developed and used them he had a contraption over the head of his banjo to hide it until he could get it patented.

A bit of choreography involved to get to that one mic.
@josephbrosk4384
@josephbrosk4384 Год назад
That Choreography is amazing. They were forced to develop it because they usually performed at places like high school gymnasiums or fellowship halls. One mic was all that was available. Today, sound engineers can mic the sound of your dandruff falling, which is why so many bluegrass singers today don't know how to project their voices. Back in the day, the singer had to "rare back & holler!"
