I captured this action on Conrail between Altoona and Lilly, PA in 1997 and 1999. Interested in my new found hobby of videography, I set out to capture the action on Conrail’s Allegheny mountain grade. This video presents some of the first rolls of footage I would record long before producing professional videos. Conrail was at the end of its operating life, however performing at its highest level. Double stacks were now commonplace on “The Mountain” and automobile traffic was steady. The motive power was in good operating condition with new models of SD60I’s, SD60M’s, C40-8W’s and others. Conrail was in its prime leading up to the NS/CSX merger.
We present this video as our salute to this great railroad with never before seen footage. Within this short video we see numerous trains at: Alto, Horseshoe Curve, Gallitzin, UN, AR, MP249, MO, Cresson, and Carney’s Crossing (MP253). We hope you enjoy this brief look at Conrail action between Altoona and Lilly!
*Special Note* This video was recorded on analogue DV equipment and is presented for historic enjoyment. Though this may be of lower video quality, it is high on nostalgia in our book!
