STORYLINE:
A salvage team off Uruguay used a floating crane on Wednesday to raise a key piece of the sunken German battleship Graf Spee, lifting a 27-ton part of the command tower after weeks of failed attempts.
Retired Navy Captain Alberto Braida, a logistics planner for the salvage operation, told The Associated Press that the team recovered its first significant part of the ship, once a symbol of German naval might in the early days of World War Two.
Salvage crews recovered part of the communications tower that once held sophisticated range-finding equipment for the warship''''''''s 11-inch (280-millimetre) guns.
The vessel - considered one of the most sophisticated of its time - prowled the south Atlantic, sinking as many as nine allied merchant ships before warships from Britain and New Zealand crippled it in a December 1939 naval engagement.
Scuttled by its captain in the River Plate shortly after the battle, the Graf Spee has remained for decades in waters less than 25 feet (7.5 metres) deep only miles (kilometres) outside the port of Montevideo.
Braida said that the team salvaged the the range-finding equipment known as the telemeter during a second attempt on Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, the recovery team managed to raise the telemeter but the supporting cables snapped and the 27-ton piece crashed back into the water.
An optical instrument, the telemeter was a sophisticated instrument for its era that helped gunners improve their aim and hone in on targets up to 35 kilometres (20 miles) away.
Tricky river currents and fickle winds on the River Plate estuary had stymied the salvage team ever since it made a first attempt on 9 February to pull the top of the command tower from the muddy waters.
The recovery effort is being financed by private investors in Europe and the United Sates.
The team said it hopes to recover as much of the ship as possible in the next three years to place it on display.
Feared by many navy forces at the outset of the war, the Graf Spee - a "pocket battleship" that carried less powerful guns and was smaller than a conventional ship of that class - was tracked down by British forces off the South American coast.
The Battle of the River Plate began on December 13, 1939, near the mouth of the river as the German warship was pursued by a battle group consisting of two British warships, HMS Exeter and HMS Ajax, and the HMNZS Achilles of New Zealand.
The Graf Spee was crippled in the fight after receiving several direct hits, and Captain Hans Langsdorff decided to take refuge in the Montevideo harbour.
Unable to make the necessary repairs, Langsdorff sank it on December 17, 1939. The crew was taken by ship to Buenos Aires, Argentina and the captain committed suicide there days later.

@GeneralKenobiSIYE
@GeneralKenobiSIYE 7 лет назад
More like a Pocket Battlecruiser. It had 11inch guns (the largest allowed Germany at the time they were built), was fast and lightly armored. The German Battleships of the time were the Scharnhorst class which were more in line with the design compromises of the German WWI battlecruisers of heavier armor than the British BCs, trading gun size and a touch of speed for armor only the Scharnhorsts did not trade speed for armor. Only gun size because of limits and lack of turrets for the 15 inch guns.They carried improved versions of the 11 inch guns the Graf Spee did. A real heavy cruiser was the Hipper Class. Cruisers generally do not have guns larger than 9 inches, if you go by definitions of back then laid out in treaties. So they are not really heavy cruisers, but small "Pocket" Battlecruisers, not Pocket battleships either.

Well no. The Washington Naval Treaty of 1922 imposed a moratorium on new battleship construction, with the exception of the two Nelson-class battleships by Great Britain, and set very strict limits on the tonnage and firepower of future battleships and battlecruisers. It also set the definition of a capital ship as a warship of more than 10,000 tons standard displacement or with armament of a calibre greater than 8 inches (203 mm). In 1930 the Washington Naval Treaty was extended by the London Naval Treaty, which finally settled the arguments on cruisers which had raged in the 1920s. The treaty defined limits on both heavy cruisers - those with guns larger than 155 mm (6.1 inches) - and light cruisers - those with smaller-calibre guns. The limit of 10,000 tons displacement still applied to both. This was the point at which the split between 'heavy' and 'light' cruisers finally became official and widespread. Graf Spee Armament: As built: 6 × 28 cm (11 in) in triple turrets 8 × 15 cm (5.9 in) in single turrets 8 × 53.3 cm (21.0 in) torpedo tubes Main armament the same calibre as Germanys WW1 battlecruisers Von Der Tann and Moltke class, and the Scharnhorst class of WW2, just fewer of them. Also her secondary armament was the same as the main armament of a light cruiser.
@richardcutts196
@richardcutts196 3 года назад
@@edletain385 Germany was not part of the Washington naval treaty. Her naval building was restricted by the treaty of Versailles. They were only allowed to replace the 6 Pre-Dreadnoughts the treaty allowed when they were 20 years old. The replacements were to have a max of 10,000 tons displacement. Germany applied to be part of the treaty at the lowest level of allowed tonnage, but were rejected.
