Absolutely love this, the guy who owns the truck is a great character and as so many people interested in what others may view as "weird" such as brick and manhole cover and steering wheel and hub cap collectors, he forms a part of the British race that have different tastes to others. Great programme and there should be a Salvage Squad in every town to help people get out of mechanical and other difficult engineering troubles!
They do not make programmes like this any more, what looked like a daunting project turned out really well, the unsung hero was the dust cart but what a character we saw here with his dust cart enthusiasm, thank you Hot Red Fox for preserving a piece of history with this video, really enjoyed watching it,and I wonder where the team are now ? I think that Clare is involved with some museum these days.
thank you its nice to see that others liked this program as much as me. yes after the program ended maybe the other team is busy with other interesting things again thank you.
With some of these people i think they only want their machines fixed up for the profit they'll make when theirs are finished, but with this one you can tell he really loves his, and when he said it'll be beyond his wildest dreams to drive his lorry, and you can tell he means it from the heart, poor man!!! I hope they do it for him. And i think he's sad loving this type of truck, yet i,m the one watching them fix it up, who's the sad one now? Shit!
I wonder if it was a "one off". I'm sure that I saw these used in Padstow, by North Cornwall Distric Council as was. But it is probably the last left now. There were also mini-sized Pakamatics from the same maker, SD, and Musketeers, by Glover, Webb, and Liversidge with an auger compactor on Commer chassis. All gone now.
For me as a foreigner the word dustcart is a bit weird. I used to drive Volvo and Scania recycling trucks, it’s exactly the same typ of vehicle. I always had this dream of driving a garbage truck but ended up driving a recycling truck, cardboard have a nicer smell. ☺️😉
Strange owner, what I mean is he doesn't seem too worried about failing the HGV test, definately odd. Having gone to all that trouble finding the SD, seems happy to just go with the flow. I recall small bin wagons like this in North Cornwall in the early 80's, so I don't think this is a unique a truck as they say it is. There was definately one in use in the Padstow area, due to narrow streets and lanes. But still, a part of British Engineering saved from the crusher and then sent to China so they can undercut everyone's steel prices has to be all good !
The owner knew he could re-take the test. It was not a thing that a job offer depended on. The dust cart was restored. That sort of dust cart is now obsolete now with the way we sort waste and use wheelie bins. I reckon if he got a waste carriers licence he could empty the bins at the vintage rallies he attends. The cart would then smell authentic. The editing of the film makes him out to be an 'anorak', but of dust carts, not railway locomotives. Were they being unfair to the cart's owner?
The computer screen could have been stripped down and the gold, silver, etc., extracted and recycled as could have the wood sections from the cabinet. There goes the Re-use * Re-duce * Re-cycle motto. The comment I really liked was at 42:40."...and now it's ready for the dump". Was he talking about the Dustcart or load of stuff in the back? 'nuf sed.
