Many boat owners in the US remind me of school days where we would drool over the toys rich kids had and yet they would not appreciate what they had or look after them. They would play with them and then abandon them for bigger, better newer ones...

Ken, Put a foot/check valve on your suction hose, you can get prime by moving the hose up and down in the water. Every down stroke will put water in the hose and it will be held by the check valve on the upstroke. Love Your job and before you complain about cold.....I live in Canada...

Hahaha. Thanks Tom! I lived in the northeast for 18 years, so I know what cold is (still not as cold as you though), but I've grown accustomed to the warmer weather down here in the sunshine state 😁

Couple of suggestions. Personally I like my toes and am have broken a couple, so I wear Teva sandals with closed toes whenever working around the boats and in water. A short PVC pipe 2-3ft with a 45degree down turn for the discharge hose works well most of the time. Finally, look into a prussik hitch to set your come along higher on the pier post. The hitch grips well and can be made out of webbing or rope. Otherwise keep doing great things.

Have the same pump. I have been threatening to go to the hardware store and get a ball valve to make priming easier. Don't know if it's possible but just an idea. Also it may be handy to have a two or three foot section to hang off the dock or the side of a boat. Also tractor supply sells a strap style come along. Does wire once will get you after they get a little age and a wire starts to free.
@CaptKenO
@CaptKenO Год назад
It's a solid pump especially for the cost! Not sure how the ball valve would help, but if you try it, let me know! Trust me, as soon as the come along isn't looking new, it'll get replaced!

A ball valve on the discharge, that and. a T before the valve to add water, makes all the difference when I have to prime my shallow well pump at my cabin every spring. You can feather the valve to release air and still hold water for the pump to grab. Being you have a clamp fitting on the discharge, maybe you could assemble a fitting with a T with a ball valve for the discharge and a simple plug to pull for adding the prime water, then just clamp it to the pump when you get to the job? Then a short run of discharge hose as mentioned.

Much better Audio and camera work mate, we can hear an see u now. Top vlog, love the boats. 👍🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟I wish people would either sell them off or look after them, boats are such special craft used for many reasons, but not to be abandoned, it's sacrilege.😁I would of just left the big red hose off Ken, then I saw u did!!!! Bloody terrific little pump too, what brand is it please

Thanks Sea Wench! I'm not sure what's worse. A beautiful yacht sitting at dock and almost never going out or a less costly boat that falls into disrepair and/or abandoned... This one is the 2in predator pump from harbor freight

The only thing you can do is idle down and put a valve on the outlet side and control discharge but its very hard on the pump

Would it have been possible or helpful to put a jump battery on the boats battery to get its bilge pump running again? I would think it is in the beat spot to get all the water.
@CaptKenO
@CaptKenO Год назад
It would be, but most of the time (this situation included) the boats battery has corroded so much from the saltwater that it won't make good enough connection to the rest of the power system.

The best way to prime those pumps is put a full port ball valve on the dis charge. Shut it off and fill the pump through the prime port till the suction line is full. Then start the pump it will start to build pressure once the pressure builds pump will bog down. then open the ball valve.
@CaptKenO
@CaptKenO 6 месяцев назад
The suction hose would never fill up since it's lower than the pump and it would just keep draining into the boat
@C10-BMC
@C10-BMC 6 месяцев назад
@@CaptKenO I didn’t mention in the above comment that we always put a foot valve down by the suction hose strainer that way the valve body of the pump will fill up and the suction hose will start to prime on its own. And it’s also not good to run those pumps dry the impeller will get hot. I used those pumps every day for 20+ years. Great channel. I just found it. 👍🏻

No need to take the cap off the priming chamber, Fill through the exhaust hole with what ever you have. The elec pump, 5gal bucket Cause it will fill the suck hose and the primer chamber. Holding your hand when full over exhaust will build pressuer. Worked water main breaks for 30+yrs. Got to be a fun job saving boats ; )

Get or make some dyneema soft shackles to have on hand so you don't screw up your cleat their cleat or your comealong hook with that work.
@CaptKenO
@CaptKenO Год назад
It'd be pretty hard to damage any of those points doing this type of work...theres very little movement so it's not like it going to rub back and forth a whole lot. Plus a hook is a one handed operation, which is a lot easier to latch on when you can't see the attachment point or can't get a 2nd hand down there

@CaptNickRivelli
@CaptNickRivelli 4 месяца назад
@@CaptKenO didn’t buy any, there’s a 2” 90deg elbow with female threads on our pump already. Just bought a male 2” threaded nipple and glued that to a stub of 2” and then into the 2”-3” reducer. The one way valve I found had hose clamps on both ends so I just cut the intake hose clean off and clamped the valve on and then the 2” pvc pickup nozzle into that.

In these situations does the insurance pay or does the boat owner have to pay?

If you have hull insurance, they'll pay for it. Depending on who they have, we will either bill the insurance company directly or bill the customer who will then get reimbursed by their insurance

The quickest way to re prime the pump is not to let the suction hose suck air. Keep it under water at all times. 😂😂Just messing with you. 😅😅😂
@CaptKenO
@CaptKenO Год назад
Lmao 🤣 You're not wrong about that! Most boats we've got decent access to the bilge so it can just run from one spot until most of the water is pumped out so I don't have to keep repriming

Wondering if a water eductor would work better with the gas pump? That way the pump wouldn't lose its prime.
@CaptKenO
@CaptKenO 7 месяцев назад
I've never heard of a water eductor, so had to look it up...but not sure how that would keep the pump from loosing its prime since it creates a vacuum from a moving "fluid"
@mediadaemon
@mediadaemon 4 месяца назад
@@CaptKenOEssentially you would have the gas pump pumping from the body of water and not the boat, the discharge would power the eductor in the sunk boat direct to sea. I don't see it being more effecient in this situation though. What I would be inclined to try, is a tee on the suction of the pump, have the green suction hose on the 90deg el of the tee and the straight through section of the tee reduced to 3/4 and fed from an electric submersible you toss in the water. Then there is always prime water being fed into the gas pump, couple that with a foot valve/check valve on the suction end of the main hose and it likely would recover prime very quickly. I also second a 5' piece of rigid discharge as others mentioned, can lash it to the dock to assist in pump walk. You could also have that setup stay in your boat that way and be less hassle unloading it.

There should be a huge enviromental pollution fine to the insurance company if they feel "We will take our time getting an adjuster out there and if it sinks it sinks attitude." It's bad enough humans are destroying everything.
@CaptKenO
@CaptKenO Год назад
It sucks yes, but being a gas powered vessel, it won't really create anymore environmental damage if it sinks. A diesel powered vessel on the other hand would, and insurance companies do get fined and have to pay for the cleanup in a lot of those situations

10' of rigid hose would work great for the discharge hose. Or 10' of the same type of hose you are using for the suction line. You certainly do NOT need all that lay flat hose.

Yeahhhhh, we've stopped using the lay flat unless we need to direct the water somewhere
