Got an old computer? The power supply (see warning below) can contain a lot of useful parts for electronic projects and experimentation!
WARNING: Never work on electronics that are connected to mains. Power supplies can hold dangerous / fatal power long after they are disconnected. Always use proper safety precautions when soldering / desoldering. Dispose of electronic waste properly. If you don't know about any of the above learn first or don't do it.

Salvaging, re-purposing and re-using needs to be encouraged. Thanks.

Sometimes in life you just need name reminders of circuit board parts. Everyone brain farts here and there. Nice to find this simple video and have it go over a few basic parts. Thanks for the vid.

The inductor coils can be re-used for de-noising a small dc-motor. did that and it works perfectly since I had nothing else around.
@tsbrownie
@tsbrownie 4 года назад
Interesting, I will have to try that. Thank you.

Does de-noising mean silencing? If so how does a coil make the motor quiet?
@mrechbreger
@mrechbreger Год назад
@@anthonygoddard428 well it depends which spectrum you're listening to and how good your ears are 🙂 It's about suppressing HF noise. -- not about the actual mechanical motor noise.

Ever since I was a kid I have salvaged electronic components and hardware. Having salvage parts has saved my bacon quite a few times.

3:23 Orange with heatshrink is MOV , metal oxide varistor. Protective device that explodes and thats why its in heatshrink.

Why not save the chips? Depending on what they are could be handy or fun to check out of curiosity.

I usually don't break out the soldering iron right then and there, and we all know when the leaves on the bottom of our salvage they're starting to get pretty short, in just like everybody else I've pulled my soldering iron out and get that relay out or I can get that capacitor out put it in the drawer that was marked for it every now and again I'd go back for something whenever and and sure enough there be a capacitor with only one leg on it, so what do I do I take pear tin snips and I go around that board cutting everything I want in Trinidad off nice and neat to the product and it helps keep those leads on there and and especially when you want to go back to it later and use it obviously you wanted it if you salvaged it, that little piece of board that's underneath that whatever it is it helps out so I leave it there

I remember playing with at psu's as a kid. Was quite shocking to say the least. Best to turn off the ac before doing so. Or risk waking up a day later to find powers all out and blood all over the joint due to those sharp cases in the day. RIP to those who didn't make it. Unless you're a musician, please don't play live. (i was 8 btw)

What are the brown or black ones their relays and yellow ones are like that their filters? Thank you for the video it's been very informative but yeah I better double-check cuz I thought it was a relay

@@tsbrownie thank you my friend I appreciate it,, I'm enjoying what I'm doing because I got a little bit too much time on my hands since they decided to retire this old horse, so it takes up some of my time but all of my time is spent out in my shop, my whole life is I've worked 2nd 3rd shift, and I see no reason for it to change sure is peaceful at this time day nobody calling nobody wants anyting and if somebody knocks at your door you just pretend you're asleep, lol!

What exactly do you keep referring to as a jewel thief?
@tsbrownie
@tsbrownie Год назад
It's a joule thief and it is a device to take all the remaining energy out of a "dead" battery. Here's where I built one. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IV3lArO0_0U.html

how can i make a 5 Vdc out of parts that i got from a psu?
@tsbrownie
@tsbrownie 5 лет назад
It's a good question. The answer is too complex to write out here. Most computer power supplies put out 5 volts at some pretty good amps. Just beware you need to insulate the supply so people are not exposed to the high voltage AC involved.
@souhailla10
@souhailla10 5 лет назад
@@tsbrownie yes but the psu is to bug as i like to use only the 5 volt into a small plastic case to have on my desk
@tsbrownie
@tsbrownie 5 лет назад
For that I use a "wall wart" or if I need more power I find a power supply from an old laptop or similar with the voltage I need. You can look up a LM7905 voltage regulator. It's easy to use and they give a sample circuit.
@leonpijpers7327
@leonpijpers7327 Год назад
a bit late to answer, good question, better use a USB charger for getting 5VDC, it is small and probably easier to use. Probably all power supplies like in the video have a High Voltage part of about 75 % of the pcb area and a Low voltage part where the +5V +12V and possibly -12V and other voltages are made. at 3:00 in the video you see the 3 little 4 pin IC's that are opto couplers, which bridge the isolation internally by using an Infra red transmitter and receiver pair for the feedback, meaning if your +5V gets to high it lights the transmitter more, and the receiver conducts more, lowering the transmitted energy in the High voltage part. All of the 75% of the High voltage part can be connected to the 400VDC capacitor and can kill you, or give you a nasty shock at least. The voltage in this capacitor can remain high for a long time too, so if you unplug it, do not expect it to lose this charge any time soon. (see his disclaimer at 0:12) he touches the top of this capacitor at 0:19, which is the aluminium can top probably still isolated if it is not damaged, so relatively save to do, just do not put the other fingers below the pcb while you have it plugged in, or just after you unplugged it, you are probably at least hurting yourself pretty badly.
