Got root rot? No problem! ...well, actually, it is a bit of a problem, but I’m here to help you out with it. Let me know if you have any questions! Instagram: @phillyfoliage
This is how I save my rotting Snake Plants (note. only works when at least one leaf is left intact) 1. Remove the entire plant from a pot (don't pull, as many roots will be even more damaged) 2. Gently shake as much soil off as you can until all roots are exposed. Some roots will fall off with soil, that's ok. 3. Cut any slimy, black, mushy roots off. Don't even hesitate - if they're not white/orange in color - remove. Even if a couple of healthy roots are left, that's fine. 4. Prepare a weak mixture of distilled water+potassium permanganate. Mix well. (not much of PP is needed, just a pinch until water becomes slightly purple and transparent. If it turns dark and opaque, discard and try again with less amount). 5. Submerge the plant in this mixture (just slightly over the rosette), keep away from leaves. Mix around till leftover soil comes off. Then leave the roots submerged for 10 minutes. 6. Remove and rinse the roots under running water. 7. Dry everything with paper towels. Wrap the roots in paper towels until they're dry, tip over the plant so any water comes out of the rosette. 8. Now plant the Snake Plant in coconut coir. It should be completely DRY. 9. Do not water for several days (5-7 days). We are doing this to draw any moisture out and aerate the roots. This kills most fungi and bacteria. 10. Then water sparingly, so the coir is barely moist. It also dries quite quickly, but don't be tempted. Wait a week or so after the coir has completely dried out and then water again. When Snake Plant recovers (tug it lightly from time to time to see if new roots developed), replant normally in new, good draining soil with perlite and gravel.
Fun fact - Root rot is much more a light issue than a watering issue. If a plant isn’t receiving sufficient light, it won’t photosynthesize, which means it won’t use the available water. The roots will sit in stagnant water and they will become susceptible to fungi and bacteria attacks. The best thing to do is to give your plants as much view of the open sky as possible. Keeping them in a dark corner away from any window will ensure any plant’s demise either through starvation or root rot. Even so-called “low-light” plants like the Sansevieria prefer bright indirect light. The reason why people think it thrives in low light is because it doesn’t dramatically drop or yellow leaves like most other plants in the absence of light. Basically, it starves to death more gracefully. If a plant is away from a window and/or in an area that receives gentle light (like a north-facing window), water very very sparingly. Or move a plant close to a window for a few days after watering. Even a few feet away from a window can severely impact useable light levels for photosynthesis. 🙂
Thanks! Another greast video! I spent the day putting cut smoothie straws in the top of the soil of all my plants. Then I put a lawyer of Diamateous Earth on top of the soil, around the plant and straws. This allows me to water below the surface of the soil. Fungus Gnats will not be attracted to the plants. If one does land on the soil, the sharp silica in the DE cuts their exoskelton and kills them. I did all of this because I bought a Starfish from a new Flower Store and it had Fungus Gnats. I took the four new plants that I bought and took as much of the soil off the roots as I could. I rinsed the roots in soapy water and then in clean water. I added systemic insect killer to the potting soil, microwaved it and let it cool. I added granulars to the soil, mixed them in and repotted the plants. Then I added the straws and DE. GONE! No more Fungus Gnats! Never bring a new plant home and put it with the rest of your plants. Quarentine them for two weeks to make sure there were no hitch hikers that came along with them. Other wise you will have an infestation affecting all of your plants. I will be getting my Mexican Butterwort next week. So excited! Looking forward to the next video. ☺
I just found a small pump water sprayer. Makes watering the plants through the straws so much easier and faster. I used to use a measuring cup which took a lot longer.
I have a plant that i just adore very much for over 2 years now and i got to know the name today via ur video😝Its Dracena compacta...💞 Thankyou sooooo much😘
My snake plant has root rot ... I changed the soil and mistakenly poured fresh water ( size of water bottle ) onto the pot ...o just read your not suppose to water for a week after root rot ...is there anything I can do to dry the soil quicker ?
Me too lol. Had it a week and it’s dying! I’ve since learnt it doesn’t like direct sunlight, and can thrive well without much light. I let it water via a saucer, but forget about it for about 5 hours so hence I drowned it :(
Thank you for the tips! I’m trying to save a Pink Princess Philodendron that my parents gave me as a gift. I drowned her. She’s only about 4” but the stem that still has 3tiny healthy leaves is still firm and looks healthy. I hope I can save her 😔
Hi can you please help me in reviving my aloe vera plant.. I had gone somewhere for 2-3 days.. And my aloe vera plant was in good shape mean while I was not there someone most probably my roomy I guess gave lots of water my aloe plant now its stem and the starting of the leaves have rotten maybe they were in water for some time don't know.. Now I am really scared how to make it work again... Its like now leaves are so soft from the starting (The part from where they are attached to the stem) that they are easily detachable from the stem even if I touch them. Can you please help in reviving it. I have been with this plant from 2-3 months and is my first plant I dared to care for, so kinda attached to it, don't want it to die.
Same.. even though I know I can root cuttings in water, because the roots had rotted due to overwatering I was wary about water rooting remaining plant. Visual recognition of our exact situation is super helpful!
You are awesome, my dear! You have the most sweetest smile & kindest heart! Your energy alone keeps me watching! You’re absolutely amazing! So far my fav plant guru! ❤😂😘😘 thanks for the tips, honey!!
I have a snake plant somehow it got ripped out of the pot and it only has one root now should i just stick it back in the soil or should i put it in water to grow more roots im scared its going to die because it has one root and three tall stems attached
I have Sanseveria Trifaciasta. I know it is not suffering from root rot but it is curling like a baby's curly hair. Not inward but makes multiple curls. The leaves are healthy though as it is stiff and hard. Is it normal for them to be curled?
Thanks for the video. Would help for those of us not experienced to know the difference of healthy root and not healthy, at this point I’m just going to throw out the plant.
Root rot, number one killer of bulbs and succulents in my care. Reminds me I have to check my aloe. *checks* omg brittle new paddle. so sorry friend but you seem to be okay otherwise. looks like I'm getting a new cutting.
Hi..my Monstera Deliciosa had heavy root rot and i repotted it after taking off the rotten part...it was fine for about two weeks but not one small bottom leaf is yellowing... should i repot it again?
I bought my snake plant in a glass container with decorated sand at the bottom and rocks at the base (top) i thought these plants can survive in water and I was unsure how to water so I was overwateriing and now my plant smells weird. what can I do to fix it before it starts to die? I've taken it out of its pot and let the roots dry out is this okay?
Trying this with my peace lily, had repotted it with a few straggly brown roots but it didn’t perk up (must’ve been some rotten ones left behind) I’m not convinced they were healthy enough to bring it back so hoping new roots will save it!
Hi Nick, thanks for the video. I have a 6 foot long golden pothos that I've been plucking yellow leaves off of for about 2 weeks. I'm afraid it's root rot because it receives the right amount/kind of light. If take the plant out of the soil, cut off the potentially rotted parts of the roots, and repot into new soil will it have any chance? I suppose it depends on how much of the roots are spoiled... Can I propagate vines that length in water? Many thanks.
my research has brought me to this debate over whether or not you should but your plants in water. most professionals say that its a waste of time and that it may, in fact, cause more strain on your plants. With that said having root rot is not just cloning so perhaps taking your plant from the soil is good, but then with that said how do you know your not just going to put it back and have the something happen like a mold?
I bought a silver agleonema (sp?) and it had no roots, only little ribbon things hanging off of the bottom. I cleaned it off and seen that it had new roots growing so I stuck it back in some fresh soil? Do you think it will live?
Hello, I’ve question hope you can help me. My snake plant 🌱 is becoming very yellow from the top of the leaf. And very soft and dropping from the bottom. I changed the pot but I don’t know what to do with the leafs because I can’t separate them.
Late answer: technically yes, because the plant is not getting many (or any) nutrients out of water. But it would take a lot of time for you to notice any consequence s. Just change water regularly and they will root just fine. I pot when roots are at least 2".
This dude saves a couple of celery sticks and he is a hero. A lot of Ignorance is going on if your whole root system is gone. Pay more attention to plant health and also learn how to spot early symptoms. Then learn to treat them. (Hint .... H2O2) . All your doing is throwing a hail Mary rookie shit pass and now this newb is the Dr. Phil of Gardening? Gesh... there are sheep everywhere looking to join a cult.
How long should I let the roots get before I repot in soil? I have a Chinese Evergreen with root rot. I got 4 separate pieces that I should be able to save using your technique. Just need to figure out when I can remove them from the water.
I JUST found out that my exact same snake plant that you put as an example had root rot a couple of days ago... you posted this video RIGHT IN TIME cuz I had a bit of freak out so THANK YOU!!
Dang ,I knew !! I keep putting mine back in soil and eventually losing them ! BUT EVERYTHING IVE EVER STUCK IN WATER HAS SURVIVED! I EVEN USE THE BEST SOIL ,cacti ,well draining soil and terra Cotta pots. I even disinfect and even bought brand new pots and used peroxide on the remaining roots and still lose them. So yes !! I should do this , you're so RIGHT!! TY
I have tried growing roots with leaves and tiny plants of sansevieria and they are all dying ;( become soggy :( How can I save my big plants that were watered to much and lost tthe main root? My favourite plant was watered to much when I was on vacation. I took it out, removed leavees that were soft, but what next? I am afraid to put it into water .On the onther hand in the soil they will not be standing and I won't be able to check how the are doing. Please help! I love this plant as I got it from my boyfriend.I have them over 5 years now, they are up to 80 cm and I can't loose them :(
Most people would recommend every few days, but I say once a week is good. Sometimes I would forget for weeks and it was always fine, but changing it is important to avoid any further rot or fungus development
I loath people and books that go on and on about the problem!!! And very little time on the cure. For a price. The internet should and used to be FREE!!!!
D Confused I feel if your getting information for free( not spending $ on books, not paying for a class or someone’s expertise, not spending your own time and learning though trail and error) get over the fact that your not being spoon fed your answer, if listening to a couple minutes of talking is the price pay it because it’s small. There’s a fast forward button for long intros unless your too lazy to use it. Don’t be entitled to knowledge and be grateful that it is given so freely on the internet.
I know it has been a year since you posted this video. my little snake plant was showing signs of root rot so I have done what you suggested. Fingers crossed it works!!!
