I think you touch a very subtle point of what has happening to us, the millennials. Back in the days when all the graphics was pixelart by necessity, there were no games like Narita Boy for us. Because the tech and hence the visuals have been developing so rapidly, that we knew that there will be a game with more colors and better resolution the next year, and the games of those years will at best look obsolete. Those willingly playing Super Mario in the days of Starcraft would've been considered weirdos. But today, with the hardware limitations as good as absent altogether, it all comes to style and plot and atmosphere and... And it's not that this was absent in the 90s games, but just like we turned back to Duck Tales and Contra, expecting them to not to get 32-bit graphics but to stay as they are, just as we don't expect the Sistine Chapel's frescoes to be replaced by glittering holography, we may wish for NEW iconic games to simply appear. And yeah, can't wait for the game. Even if it's not as cool as promised, I'll at least have the soundtrack. But... Narita Boy has to try really hard to be uncool, cause it's already awesome in every sense possible, with good odds of becoming The Ultimate Synthwave Game.
