Kentucky Life visits the Magoffin County town of Salyersville. Located on the Licking River, the town (population 1,883) was established out of the former Adamsville in 1860, the same year the county was formed out of parts of Morgan, Johnson and Floyd counties.
A big draw here is the Pioneer Village, where the Magoffin County Historical Society has rebuilt original log cabins-some dating back to the early 1800s-to create a living history museum. The society also runs a genealogical library and honors a different family each year for Founders Days.
The town sits in the Eastern Coal Field, and a major employer here is Joy Global, a mining equipment manufacturer with operations worldwide.
Salyersville is rebuilding after an EF3 tornado on March 2, 2012, damaged schools, homes, and several Mountain Parkway businesses. With the work of untold numbers of people, the town is slowly getting back on its feet. Signs of renewal include groundbreaking for a new church, the reopening of the Subway restaurant, and the reopening of an auto parts store.

If you go looking for cemeteries, good luck. Theres about a hundred of them, they're not clearly marked, and forget GPS.

Just saw this video and enjoyed the information provided. I have wanted to visit this town for many years. My family roots in this town go back to the time period before it was called and included the time in which it was named Adamsville, after local landowner William "Uncle Billy" Adams. I need to visit.

I used to go through there often on my way to Pikeville, and remember when the tornado went through. I didn't hear about it, actually - I learned about it when I came down off the Mountain Parkway a week or so later and saw the devastation - I couldn't believe it. I never had time to stop and take in any part of the town, but I wanted to. Nice area and the people in that area of the country are so nice.

My family lived here from about 1800 until the mid to late 1930s. My great grandmother was born there and I came a few years ago seeking family records. Luckily for me, they have a whole book for sale on the Howard's. Visiting was a surreal experience for me because I've never been anywhere with, you know, only one McDonalds. It's a beautiful place.

When I lived in Morgan Co which is next Co over, people used to go to Magoffin Co to buy beer (: I believe both counties were Dry but there were bootleggers in Magoffin. If you ever go to KY you will get a lot of waves from people, and people on the street will always speak to you, very friendly people, oh and women will call you Honey (: it's a Southern thing.

I'm glad to find your channel and thankful for the Magoffin County Historical Society. I've been going genealogy on the Montgomery and Franscisco (Cisco), families who apparently were some of the earliest settler in this area. A large group of families, together, relocated to Ardmore, Oklahoma in 1906. Thanks again for posting videos with Salyersville information.

My hometown I go back to visit family every 2-3 months. Good place to visit or retire. No good paying jobs sad to say. Only one factory there that my dad retired from, it used to be called Continental Conveyor now it’s Joy. Daddy was the 3 rd man that was hired when the factory first opened.
