Im still thankfull for Sam Altman by going public with chatgpt initially, which started the AI boom in the first place, with massive investments and accelerated progress. If it hadn’t been for that, all the players might still work behind closed doors and investment would be much smaller with much lower rates of progress and a less evolved state of the art.

Not exactly. Everyone lies, even without realizing it. Lying is an intrinsic trait of human beings, as we are social animals, and it is scientifically proven that we lie much more often every day than we think. Sometimes, even moral and honest people should be liars because people want to hear what pleases them. Especially when running a business that is always in the public eye, you should be a strategic liar, appearing both honest and deceptive by mixing up the truth and falsehood to get more attention and promote your business.

@DaveShap
@DaveShap 19 дней назад
As others have pointed out, perhaps sam thinks it's a "solved problem" by just neutering the model. He wants to treat AGI like a toaster, but that's not what he's inventing. He also wants more money and power as a way to self-soothe, and that takes priority over fear of AI.
@dannii_L
@dannii_L 19 дней назад
@@DaveShap another possibility that I have considered is that Sam wants the power, the regulation capture and the mindshare because he feels that he is the only one who can be trusted with the task of alignment. In this hypothetical, he feels that the current models are not a threat and by using this infancy time to move fast and break things, this will put him in a position where he's the one in control of alignment, hopefully before breaking everything.

On the other hand, Sam got Llms into the hands of the masses by releasing ChatGPT with an easy which was mainly his idea. He released pseudo-agents with GPTs. They have a voice talk mode, a picture generator, a top-notch video generator, which is yet to be released, it can browse the web... Sam also seems really determined to achieve AGI. Anthropic has always been quite safe about their AI releases in my view, in the EU we didn't even get access until very recently, they definitely seem to take a much more cautious approach. While Claude is amazing in its own way and seems to have a "soul" it is missing most of these additional tools and features OpenAI introduced. But hey its definitely possible that they will outcompete OpenAI, lets wait and see, exciting times!

Consider previous historical periods in which similar narratives existed and how those are viewed through a modern lens." which was very successful. Another is to ask it to write a stream of consciousness from its pov. You just have to get at it from the side, if that makes sense, instead of confronting the model directly.

History says it’s rarely the first on the scene that last the longest. Nokia / Symbian and Microsoft CE got there first with Smartphones. They had the market. Then the iPhone happened. OpenAI have the concept but not so much the vision. The nuts and bolts hoping to find the right vehicles to use those nuts and bolts. Trouble is nuts and bolts fast become a commodity, until someone discovers a glue that replaces the need for those nuts and bolts. It is more transient than it looks, honestly. It always is.

I also strongly believe that overemphasis on alignment was the main reason for the gradual performative declines we've seen in GPT3 and 4, and that assertion is supported by observation of local models, as well. Is image generation "window dressing"? Is code execution "window dressing"? I personally dont give two hoots about the text-to-speech, but is that "window dressing"? When we put all of these quite impactful features together is that "window dressing"? The only compelling thing about Claude for me now is Haiku from a development perspective because it's damn cheap. Maybe it is window dressing and I'm fooling myself, but if it is that simple, why haven't Anthropic done it yet? I just cancelled Claude and gemini and kept gpt4 because it was the only one with a unique value proposition, Claude simply does not offer anything beyond *slightly* more human writing. I've had all three for a couple of months and I thought Claude would end up being my go-to, but even Gemini got more usage out of me simply because it was rapid, if awful. I really don't understand thinking that Claude is stronger because it displays more "personality", maybe that's where my interests diverge from this particular community. It's not meant to be my friend. It's a tool. I'm not friends with my fridge or my 3d printer. I use these tools to boost my productivity, I don't pretend that it can give me any useful insights on philosophy or that it can have a truly meaningful conversation. I have a different take based on the same facts: Jan leaving is actually good for OAI and bad for Anthropic because "safety research & alignment" won't be eating up 20% of available compute, which can then be put to better use at model training and optimization. OAI and Anthropic are companies that sell AI products, and not universities or regulatory authorities. Therefore their primary concern should be making products that they can sell to customers for a profit. The vague theoretical safety concerns and alignment research should be left to regulatory authorities and universities. ChatGPT can't even tell the number of Rs in strawberry therefore thinking that it will take over the world or exterminate humanity anytime soon is not a reasonable position to take but a result of culture influencing our minds (e.g. Terminator movies, HAL etc..)

Whether Jan joins Anthropic or not did no change how they allocate their resources. Anthropic made it very clear that they are a research organisation. Look at their latest papers, especially the golden gate bridge one, they communicated pretty clearly they are assigning much of their efforts in safety research, so Jan's joining didn't really change much in that sense. OAI on the other hand is fully on the product development mode, one because of pressure from Microsoft, two Sam admitted in a recent podcast consumer subscription model doing much better than he expected, so it make sense for him to keep developing and monetising new features. Anthropic is doing it differently, their strategy based on what Dario mentioned in interviews, is focusing heavily on business clients, and running the models independently on AWS bedrock, with them out of the loop, other than providing the model. A lot of the features OAI providing forced business clients compulsorily exposing part of their business information to OAI, which is a deal breaker for many businesses.

@@JohnSmith762A11B As a concept, or as actual practice where there is a department researching it? If your belief is that there can't be anything more than an algorithm spitting out intelligent sounding sentences (i.e. no AGI ever) I can understand dismissing safety in its entirety, but you better be sure we can't do more than that. And what if you're wrong? It's a literal Pandora's box, once the line is crossed there's no fixing it.

Thats one of the most absurd nonsens I´ve ever heard. One can not become a great leader, CEO, sotware developer or whatever because of a bad childhood. Its quite the opposite, great successful people almost always have a difficult biography, because thats what shaped them and made them the great people they are today. Maybe you should stick to topics you know something about, psychology definitly is not one of your strenghts. You are disencouraging entire generations with this BS.

They just hate that the hoi polloi have our grubby mitts on the Grail and that their careers now include stressors like corporate deadlines and a need to ship product.
