I worked in a slaughterhouse. Not proud of it. Myself and many of my friends have suffered mental trauma because we had to kill a 1000 baby animals everyday. Nothing can prepare you for that job. I remember being excited on my first morning, all my family told me it's was a good carrer choice as I'd always have a job. My background was civil engineering so once the "credit crunch" kicked in I was out of work and I needed a job, as being out of work as a man is socially unacceptable, and I have a family to cloth and feed and provide a roof over their heads for. It was a job offered to me by one of my friends, I needed the money so took it. My excitement soon turn to shock, my first day I was skinning 10 week old lambs on a machine. Seeing these babies thrash about from having their throats sliced open and using this machine really brings it home. Then I was desposing of skinned heads of steers. Having a bin full of skinned heads with all the eyes staring at you really freaked me out. The worst few days I ever had was when they brought in unwanted dairy calves. They were all males. The farmers do not want the males as they are regarded as waste, most farmers can't kill these babies cause it's not an easy thing to do. Many calves don't even have the strength to walk as they are taken within hours of being born. But guess who had to kill them. All I kept thinking about was my kids. The steers often get up off the floor after being hit with the bolt pistol and rolled out the pen. Once a steer got up 3 times. Many of us were shocked and it wasn't long after that I left for a different job. As for the pigs, well they are extremely smart, they always try to escape, the one thing I got from that job was that none of these animals want to die. Youd have to be a fool to not recognize the fear in their eyes. I thought myself that all they probably want is to be with their mothers, slightly different for the steers as they are 18 months but there truma starts young, steers are castrated and separated from the mothers at a young age. Hence why they are called steers. I believe today that I still suffer with some flash backs and some ptsd. Many of my friends who also did that job have ptsd. There is NO animal or staff welfare. This is the tip of the iceberg as there is so much more I've seen and done for a weeks wages. Unconsciously I was vegan for many years after that job. Then eventually I got back to eating meat but all I ate was chicken, as those were the only animals I never handled. But I did feel guilty, first I use to justify it to myself as, well it's been killed so it would be a waste, but then I'd sit there asking myself do I really need this, these days I'm a fully conscious vegan, and actually enjoy my plant based dinners and I even have a smile on my face when eating it, and that's not just cause it's tasty. Many of my ex slaughterhouse worker friends also are either fully vegan or eat meat once a month, some of them also have to see a councilor to deal with the trauma from that job. I'm an activist. Been to cubes of truths and shared my experiences which leads all meat eaters either crying or just in a state of shock. No one really knows what goes on in a slaughterhouse and you have to go to one as videos don't give the full sensory experience. The smells, sound and sight do not really translate over the tube. I always say most people find it a struggle to get up and go to the office on a Monday morning, now imagine how it feels getting up the same day knowing you got to kill a 1000 animals. It's not natural for humans to kill, if it was none of us would have the same ptsd that child soldiers get and some slaughterhouse workers wouldn't of killed themselves cause of that job. That trauma also spills over into life, many of the older guys had drink problems and the younger ones were drinking hard and doing hard drugs, also many of our nights out would end in violence and some of these guys wouldnt give a second thought about killing a person, in fact some of them ended up being so messed up that they didn't joke saying things like Mmmmmmm bacon, no they joked about slaughtering people. I've been attacked by meatards (online only) who seem to think because we have suffered with mental health problems that, we are, or I am a "pussy". Bold statement coming from people who regard driving to a supermarket to buy flesh of something that someone has killed for you as being top of the food chain, and has never even been to slaughterhouse let alone had to slaughter as many as we had to on a daily basis, and usually these are the same people that cry when the Chinese eat dogs 2 weeks a year. Dog, pig, lamb, cow, chicken and every other animal that suffers by human hands, I see no difference.
