Sam Houston State University is one of the oldest and largest criminal justice programs in the country and was the first to offer a Ph.D. degree in the field. Created by the Texas Legislature in 1974, it has four distinct mandates: to educate undergraduate and graduate students; to conduct research in the field; to train professionals in criminal justice; and to provide technical assistance to agencies. This unique program offers opportunities for lifelong learning, whether as a student receiving pre-service training; a professional seeking advancement in a career from the Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas or the Correctional Management Institute of Texas; or an academic addressing practical issues or policy concerns in the field.
The College is ranked #1 in the country for its faculty research and #3 in the nation for its online graduate education, which draws students from around the U.S. and the world. It has produced distinguished leaders in criminal justice at the local, state, national, and international levels, both in public and private service, who continue to return to SHSU for new learning opportunities, to get answers for pressing problems at their agencies, or to recruit students from the program.
