Great footage. I'm so glad this historical footage of the great Sam Langford is still available for us to see. I am always happy to see old and rare boxing footage. I hope someday footage of both Barbados Joe Walcott and Jersey Joe Walcott's old footage are found. We also need more footage of Joe Jennette, welterweight Sugar Ray Robinson, George Dixon, more Joe Gans, young Jack Johnson, more Sam Langford (the Iron Hague fight in particular) and many more!

@@seeya101oliASWHDFIL lol youre wrong. Marathon bouts were a totally different animal, most fighters didnt like having them, and it was a fad amongst fans that was short lived. To be more precise Dempsey likely "threw" their first encounter because Dempsey's brother owed a lot of money to gamblers. There is a series of interesting contemporaneous articles about this which you can find on the BoxRec website. Dempsey would say that he got hit by a good punch and his brother threw the towel in too early. Read the stories in the website noted above for an interesting take.

Sam Langford, probably the greatest fighter of all time. In this fight with Flynn, Sam was forced to carry Flynn to the fourth round as per agreement by the managers of each fighter. Jack Johnson would never give Sam a rematch due to the first fight where Sam outboxed and out slugged Johnson at 156lbs.
@RRRRapify

It was the other way around. Johnson handily beat Langford, but there was like a 25 lbs difference between them. Also, Johnson didn't give Langford a rematch, or any elite black fighter in the day, because he wanted the limelight for himself as the only black fighter for the heavyweight title. Also, due to racism nobody was gonna watch 2 blacks going at it for the title.

Fireman Jim Flynn was one tough hombre, but Sam was in a class by himself. He just toys with Flynn until he gets ready to end it. No slam again Flynn because he was an above average fighter that fought some of the greatest names in boxing. Besides Sam, Flynn fought the likes of Tommy Burns, Philadelphia Jack O'Brien, Jack Johnson, Billy Pakpe, Gunboat Smith, Carl Morris, and Jack Dempsey, whom he kayoed the in the first fight and lost in the second fight. Sam fought all of these, save Papke, who drew a color line (hint: scared as heck!). Sam's fight record was unmatched by any! Sam was the greatest uncrowned champ ever! Apparently Flynn wanted to dance more than he wanted to fight. If you want to get in close to fight, you have to have something to give your opponent. You can’t get in close and play patty-cake. Sam Langford didn’t mind close-in fighting, because he definitely had something to give his opponents.

Langford had 90 fights and was only 26 years old . .

The main difference I notice in these old fights, is the refs let them clinch alot more than nowadays and the fighters used arm blocks to frame against punches and used their arms to push off alot more than today. Could you imagine walking in the ring knowing you're in for a 45 round fight? That's equal to three 15 round fights in one night if it goes the distance.

Sam Langford beat the great Joe Gans at lightweight at age seventeen. Gans was lightweight champion and in his prime but for whatever reason, the title wasn't on the line. He then beat Hall of Famer George ‘Elbows’ McFadden. He then drew with the great Jack Blackburn, another excellent technical boxer (later trainer of heavyweight champion Joe Louis) twice ad then moved up to welterweight and drew with legedery Barbados Joe Walcott for the welterweight title. It was agreed by most that Langford won but Walcott got the decision. He beat and drew, against all of these Hall of Famers, Gans, Blackburn, McFadden and Wallcot in his first year as a pro. He drew with Blackburn again when he (Blackburn) moved up to welterweight then went on to later move up to heavyweight where he had most success and won the coloured heavyweight title in 1909, winning the coloured middleweight title en route in 1907. He was an incredibly talented and skillful boxer.way ahead of his time. Jack Johnson refused to give him a rematch after he outpointed him over fifteen rounds in a difficult fight in 1906. Dempsey said in his biography ‘Langford was the only man I was truly afraid of, he was smaller than me but I knew he'd flatten me’. He had well over 300 fights between 1902 and 1926. He faced so many Hall of famers and big names like Dixie Kid, Dave Holly, Yong Peter Jackson, Joe Jeanette, Philadelphia Jack O'Brien,, Kid Norfolk, Stanley Ketchel. Look them up. Serious boxers with serious resumes. It's great to see this very rare footage.

Great comment. Sam Langford is my pick as the greatest boxer of all time, you can also have Harry Greb and Sugar Ray Robinson as the goat. Their achievements/careers are something to behold. Don't forget Langford also defeated hws like Harry Wills and Sam Mcvea, incredible

Langford reminds me of Monzon, with his defense on the inside, the way he uses his lead shoulder to smother punches, & work his right hand to the body. This knowledge seems lost among modern day fighters - nobody fights like this anymore, with the possible exception of Spence & one or two others.
