I studied with Sam I'm a bassist !! He was A great mentor taught me how to just get up and go for it .. got to give Karl berger credit To, he was my other Teacher , super dudes !!
I saw these guys in Vancouver in 1978 and they did this exactly for 2 hours,,Sam played alto, tenor, flute and piano, exactly half an hour on each instrument. I still haven't recovered.
I have the same memory. He played the Nîmes Jazz festival in the summer of 1978. Late at night. I was dozing off in the middle of the roman arena when he came on stage. He gave me goose pimples. So glad to hear him now.
Sam is heavy. This band is heavy. That's all that needs to be said...oh, and might I add that Sam is still kicking the same ass today? Never compromise.
Had the honor of witnessing this great trio at the Camden Jazz Festival in March ‘79 at the Roundhouse. The Art Ensemble of Chicago Closed and burned the ha down that night. Namaste!
this whole series should be encased in gold and buried in the ground so 100 years from now when "free jazz" has finally died, some lucky person may find it and hopefully re-start it properly!
He really taps in deep--an what a volcano! I saw him at this time at Oberlin College, and of course he was playing piano and flute--it was mind blowing. This tune's a little thin but cool.
I saw these guys in 1980 or so at Dartmouth College. Dave Holland was sensational as was Sam, of course. I don't recall who the drummer was as I was was tripping mildly on acid. I remember vividly Dave soloing and playing lots of chords rapidly on that giant bass. Looked effortless. I'd like to see it all again.
