Brilliant film. Watched it yesterday. I had no idea it was the same director from In Bruges. Another masterpiece. Rich dialogue and very re-watchable regardless of the grim subject matter. 9/10

It was a bit too grim for me. It was a good movie, but not on the same level as In Bruges or Banshees of Inesherin. Better than Seven Psychopaths though...that was a bit of a dumpster fire (really boring).

In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths and Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri feel like a crescendo in Martin McDonagh's career. It amazes me how this man has conjured such incredible stories in his mind. Three Billboards was an absolutely magical thing to watch, how one goes about creating something so incredible is beyond me. Bravo Martin !

Sam Rockwell is weird. I feel like EVERYONE thinks he's underrated, and surely the end result of which is to say that he's actually really highly rated? But he's so fucking good. He's great in this and he stole the show in Seven Psychopaths too. Still think him not being nominated for Moon is one of the biggest misjudgments I can remember.
@Burtonesque413
@Burtonesque413 6 лет назад
I feel like that perception is mostly due to the fact that per everyday conversation, he isn't the first person that most people would jump up and say is one of their favorite actors. He is really gifted, well-respected in the film community, and consistently delivers great performances, but to the common film-goer he just isn't the character actor that people have grown to appreciate at the same level as a lot of his peers, even those who are more popular but aren't quite as good as him. The high visibility of this nomination (and most likely a win) should hopefully change that for him :)

I agree. When it ended I felt perhaps the film didn't live up to what I expected of it, but yet a week later and I can't stop thinking about the characters. That scene with Harrelson and McDormand and the blood splattered on her face made me cry so much because it was so poignant, and how they both reacted immediately with such innate compassion and concern for the other person it that moment. It showed their humanity and kindness. I don't know how anyone could have been failed to have been moved by that scene.

Sam Rockwell feels underrated (as everyone always says) but I think he's just very clever. He appears to pick his roles carefully and doesn't just churn out film after film and he doesn't seem to be the type to 'sell out' to do the huge blockbuster marvel type films. So it feels like he in under appreciated, but I don't think that's the case. He is extremely well respected in the film industry. One of the best actors of his generation in my humble opinion.
@Misk4tonic
@Misk4tonic Год назад
Absolutely agree with you. Pretty sure people mean "underrated by the industry" 'cause, truly, many of the top bankable american actors today haven't shown half of his talent and people keep seeing them everywhere...when, really, they just wanna see Sam ahah. But yeah, he said something once about even picking the auditions he would go to when he used to bus tables for a living. So, yeah. Definitely a very clever move from the beginning 'cause, at the end of the day, delivering a mind-blowing performance is something amazing, but having an impeccable career, with so many indie gems in it, is also something to be incredibly proud of. As far as I'm concerned, I love the choices he makes and I do believe he's the best out there. The only other I can think of to match his range and intensity is Walton Goggins. Boy, do I hope he gets his "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" soon so more people can agree with me ahah!

Good movie! Not a false note in a superb script.I particularly enjoyed how Mildred's analogy clearly and quietly laid waste to the priest's raison d'être.Rockwell's qualifying his mood changes was interesting. Perhaps that is why some actors, like Day-Lewis, choose to inhabit their characters fully, on or off camera.It might seem weird and idiosyncratic to some, but it stops having to second guess your emotional barometer with the cast and crew.

I watch a lot of Sam Rockwell movies... like even the ones you don't hear about as well or I should also say the smallest parts and the biggest parts or roles that he does in film.... he makes me believe that guy or charter everytime. How does he do it.... ??? He made me hate his ass in this movie... another movie he made me love his character in Mr . right. See how he controls your mind into believing that he's either that awesome of a person or that dick that everyone hates but makes it so believable.... like he's actually that guy... didn't matter that he was a cop or not in this cuz of his acting and actions.... wow when he threw that guy out the window... just an absolute dick !!! Then add being a cop to the mix just brings it to another level that nobody else touched in this movie.... don't get me wrong... Woody's and Francis' acting kicked ass.... they all got together and pulled up hard on their A-Game. Wow if you didn't like this movie or found it week in places that was the script-story and directors fault. Cuz this acting was so all amazing. If becoming an actor take notes on all of them especially that Sam. I really likes him in also The way way back and Confessions of a dangerous mind.... that was the one movie that got me to start following him in his career.... still never seen this guy in an interview either lol. One day I'll RU-vid one or 2 haha. As for Woody I liked him in After the sunset. With Peirce Brosnan and Selma Hayek. Wow that was one of my all time favorite movies. Enjoy people. You should like this one though... it's touching too. Cuz you get both sides like I mean you understand where both sides are coming from. And the characters of Frances and Woody understand each other but the rest of the world hates her and he stuck up for her when they think she's after Woody but he gets it and let's her go. Sam keep on rocking can't wait to see your next event so to speak.

Kit Findlay totally disagree, I thought the great thing about the character was he was always likeable, you could always sense the goodness the Willoughby saw in him even when he was doing reprehensible things. Part of the reason the window scene was so distressing for me personally was I was willing for Dixon to do the right thing and it was so disappointing to see him do wrong.

Why does "strong" always mean masculine? He knows nothing about women, that's why this woman is no different from his other characters. She is a wonderful actress, maybe she should have helped him write her character:-) I don't care if people disagree with my comment and I am sure they will be showered with Oscars. I just felt like writing down my opinion.

Sumitra Sarma Strength takes many forms, but I respect your opinion. Masculinity can be weak, femininity can be strong and vice versa.
@sumitrasarma6058
@sumitrasarma6058 6 лет назад
Yes, that is what I mean, to me this is a woman playing a character that could have been written for a man. He talks about female strength but it is the subtleties that he misses. Strong means so many things, restraint is often much more powerful and difficult than beating someone up. Just my impression of the character, which I felt was a bit "narrowly" written, for effect. I may be wrong.
@ayushawasthi1690
@ayushawasthi1690 6 лет назад
Sumitra Sarma you're getting mixed up. He writes dark comedies for which he has written this specific fictional character. Restraint is much more powerful ok but that would not be comical or sort of funny here in this movie. It's what the writer wants at the end of the day. See sean penn's performance in mystic river. When he finds his daughter is dead, he cries and shouts like nothing I've ever seen. That's not very masculine but that's what the writer and director wants.

I quite like Martin McDonagh’s plays but I do not like his films at all. I have seen them all because my husband likes them but God, I don’t get it! They are all the same movie blending into one: inappropriate jokes about dwarfism and overweight people that are supposed to ‘shock’ the audience, sudden and unexpected violence or death which goes way OTT and turns into a total farce, rendering most of the characters utterly unrelatable and, usually, unlikeable. THE END.

@s.g.7572
@s.g.7572 6 лет назад

@jamiehyett7216
@jamiehyett7216 6 лет назад
so many reasons, most critically the character development in the film was replaced with the fact that they had 'drama' in their life, rather than actually exploring the characters, the film just throws in any bait topic of 'interesting drama' like cancer, murder, racism, etc instead of making the characters likable. I might be in the minority but it just felt like a robot was told to generate a story with the ingredients of a drama, shit film.

I thought Woody Harrelson's character was quite likeable, but characters don't have to be likeable though to make a film interesting or well made. I don't see that as a necessary criteria anyway. One of the things I liked about the film was showing how some seemingly bad people are capable of changing and redemption given the chance. I too would have liked more in depth character development but that would have then been at the expense of the story line, or 'drama' if you will, if the film wasn't to have been 3 hours long. Or else you leave out some of the elements of the film you mentioned then you change the whole plot and it wouldn't have been true to how life is in that part of the US, nor would it have been the story the director wanted to tell anyway. I loved it in any case. The acting ensemble was terrific especially McDormand who gave a deserved Oscar winning performance and McDonagh created a visually beautiful film with a story that avoided many of the cliches of that type of story.
